TOY SAVINGS-BANK.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,512, dated June 28, 1881.

5 Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toy Savings-Banks; and I do hereby declare the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, and which is a longitudinal vertical section, partly in elevation, of my invention.

My invention has for its object to provide a I toy savings-bank or money-box in the form or 5 shape of an elephant, the figure of such beast having a movable trunk or proboscis capable of grasping a coin and conveying the same to and depositing it in the mouth of the animal.

My invent-ion accordingly consistsof a toy in the figure of an elephant, with movable trunk capable of grasping and conveying a coin to the mouth of the animal, comprising mechanism whereby such grasping and movement are effected.

Referring to the annexed drawing, A represents the figure of an elephant, formed preferably of a hollow casting in sections.

B represents the body and limbs,and O the head. The head is formed of two vertical sections, which are fastened together and pivoted to the body by abolt or rod, D. This pivot allows the head a vertical swinging or nodding motion on the body.

E shows the trunk, which is in three articulated or jointed sections, 6 0 6 the section 6 being a prolongation of the head. The section 6 forms the terminal of the trunk, and is bifurcated, as shown at 6 and provided with a spring, 0 between which and one of the branches of the fork in which it is situate a coin, 00, may be placed and held.

F represents a cord, fastened inside the section 6 at f, and passing thence through the trunk, head, and body around a bolt, a, which holds the sections of the latter together, being knotted atf, and thus forming a loop, f

G represents another cord, tied to the loop f 2 at g, and secured at g to alever, H, pivoted at h in a platform, I, on which the figure of the animal stands. Said lever is provided with a push-button, h, the shank of which projects through the platform I.

K is a spring, secured at one end to the loop f and at the other to a posterior lug, a, on

the inside of the casting.

L is a lever,- swiveled on the bolt D, having an eye, d, through which the cord F passes.

M is a crevice between the ears m m, and representative of the animals mouth, and N is a rigid-tongue or projection from the head, situated over said crevice.

The operation is as follows: A coin, a, being placed in the end of the trunk, the pushbutton h is depressed. This causes the lever H to draw upon the cords F G, and the trunk to curl upwardly and pass the coin into the mouth, the head rising, so as to increase the size of the crevice and elevate the tongue N. As soon as the coin has been fairly inserted in the mouth the push-button is allowed to ascend, the head then dropping and causing the tongue N to strike the coin ac and knock it out of the grasp of the spring 6*, whence it drops into the figure, or inside of the animal. The trunk then descends into its normal position. The offiee of the lever L is to cause the elevation of the head after the trunk has begun curling, and this is produced by the pressure on it of the.cord F. The spring K permits flexibility ot' the trunk E, and prevents the head from descending too suddenly when the pressure on the lever H is relaxed.

What I claim as my invention is- 1. A toy consisting of the figure of an elepliant with a pivoted or movable head and articulated or jointed trunk, substantially as shown and described.

2. A toy savings-bank or money-box consisting of the figure of an elephant with movable trunk, and means, substantially as described, for holding a coin in the end of said trunk, moving the latter to and from the month of said figure, and depositing said coin therein, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination, with body B, of pivoted head 0, jointed bifurcated trunk E, cords F G, levers H L, push-button h, platform I, springs e K, and tongue N, constructed and designed for operation substantially as shown and described.
