This invention relates to baseball gloves, particularly catchers mitts of' the type having a wrist structure and a lacing for adjusting the size thereof; The object of the invention is to devise a simple and economical, easily adjustable wrist structure of the above type that will prevent tearing of said structure where it joins the main body portion of the glove to form the Wrist opening. The invention consists in utilizing the adjusting lacing of the wrist structure for relieving the tearing strains thereon; and it also consists in the baseball glove or mitt and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawing, my invention is shown embodied in a glove or catchers mitt having a padded body of generally circular shape comprising a palm cover A, a back cover B and a pad C interposed between said covers, said covers and pad being notched to provide a peripheral thumb forming crotch I in said body. The palm and back covers A and B are made of leather or other ilexible material; and the pad C is made of felt or other cushioning material. The palm and back covers A and B are provided with a peripheral binding 2 and a marginal row of eyelets 3; and said covers are secured together around the margin of the padding C` by means of a lacing 4 which extends` through the marginal eyelets 3 of the two covers.

The back cover B has a hand cover D mounted on. the outer or top face thereof and shaped to form therewith a wrist opening, 5, a thumb sheath li and finger sheaths 'I. The hand cover D is sewed or otherwise permanently secured, as at 8, to the. back cover B from opposite sides of the wrist opening 5 around the thumb and finger sheaths 6 and l. The handA cover D terminates opening on said side thereof.v

Formed in the margin of the hand cover D midway between the sides of the wrist opening 5 is a notch I0 which is widened, as at Illa, at its inner end and forms a pair of wrist cover naps II that extend towards each other from opposite sides of sai'dwrist opening and are spaced apart at their free opposing ends. A separate wrist cover strap I2 extends across the spaced ends of the wrist flaps II and beneath the latter and is sewed or otherwise permanently se. cured, as at I3, at one end tothe underside of the wrist ap located thereabove. The wrist strap I2 is provided on its undersideY with a soft lining I Il and along its longitudinal edges with bindings I5. An edge binding I6 also extends around the notch I0 and the wrist aps II dened thereby and terminates at opposite sides of the wrist opening 5.

The wrist flaps II of the hand cover D are provided between the free ends thereof andthe sides of the wrist opening 5 with eyelets I1 that are arranged in two rows that extend crosswise of said opening. The. wrist strap I2l is also provided with two similarly spaced longitudinal rows of eyelets I8, one eyelet of each row being located adjacent to the free covered end of said strap and the remaining eyelets being located be.- tween the spaced free ends of the wrist flaps II. The eyelets I'I and I8 are adapted to receive. a lacing I9 for adjusting the size of the. wrist opening 5. The two exposed ends of the facing I9 are then tied. together, as at 20, on the rst. mentioned side of the wrist opening 5,

the end that extends through the back cover eyelet just outside of said opening being provided with a knot 2I to prevent said end from being pulled through said eyelet. The portions of the eyelets I8 and the wrist lacing I9 on the inner` face of the wrist strap Il are crossed by the lining I4 thereof.

By the arrangement described, the size of the wrist opening 5 may be regulated by tightening or loosening the wrist lacing I9. When tightened, the lacing I9 operates to draw the wrist flaps II toward each other to reduce the size of the wrist opening 5 and said lacing when loosened permits said wrist flaps to spread apart to increase the size of said opening. The wrist lacing I9 also serves to strengthen the mitt around the wrist opening 5, particularly at the sides thereof where said lacing serves to relieve the hand cover D of tearing strains where the marginal projections 9 thereof are sewed to the back cover B. The soft lining I4 of the wrist strap I2 serves to prevent rubbing of the eyelets II thereof and the wrist lacing I9 on the back of the users Wrist.

Obviously, the hereinbefore describe-d baseball glove construction admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention. Therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the precise construction shown and described.

I claim:

1. A baseball glove comprising a body, a hand cover secured to the back of said body and forming therewith a wrist opening, and a lacing passing through said hand cover from side to side of said opening and having portions joining said hand cover to said body inside of said opening adjacent to opposite sides thereof for relieving said hand cover of tearing strains at said opposite sides of said wrist opening.

2. A baseball glove comprising a body, a hand cover secured to the back of said body and forming therewith a wrist opening, and a lacing passing through said hand cover from side to side of said opening and having portions connecting said hand cover to said body inside and outside of said opening and adjacent to opposite sides thereof.

3. A baseball glove comprising a, body, a hand cover secured to the back of said body and forming therewith a wrist opening, and a lacing passing through said hand cover from side to side of said opening and having portions connecting said hand cover to said body inside and outside of said opening and adjacent to opposite sides thereof, said lacing having its end portions exposed and connected together at one of said sides of said opening.

A baseball glove comprising a body, a hand cover secured to the back of said body, and a lacing extending back and forth through said hand cover from one side of said opening to the other side thereof and thence back to the rst mentioned side and connecting said hand cover to said body inside of said opening adjacent to vopposite sides thereof. A baseball glove comprising a body including 'a back cover, a hand cover secured to the back cover and forming therewith a wrist opening, and a lacing passing inwardly through said back cover and hand cover just outside of one side of said opening, thence outwardly through said back cover just inside of said side of said opening, thence .through said hand cover from said side of said opening to the other side thereof, thence inwardly through said hand cover and back cover just inside of said other side of said opening, thence outwardly through said back cover and hand cover just outside of said other side of said opening, and thence through said hand cover to said first mentioned side of said opening where the two ends of said lacing are tied together exteriorly of said hand cover.

A baseball glove comprising a body including a back cover, a palm cover and padding interposed therebetween, marginal rows of eyelets in said back and palm covers, lacing extending through the eyelets of said back and Palm covers for securing them ytogether around the 'margin of said padding, a hand cover mounted on said back cover and forming therewith a wrist opening, said hand cover having marginal portions thereof permanently secured to said back cover on opposite sides of said opening and containing the back cover eyelets located just outside of said opposite sides of said opening, and a wrist lacing extending through the back cover eyelet just outside of one side of said opening, thence through the back cover eyelet located just inside of said side of said opening, thence through said hand cover to the other side of said opening, thence .through the back cover eyelet located just inside of said other side of said opening, thence through the back cover eyelet located just outside of said other side of said opening, and thence through said hand cover to said first mentioned side of said opening where the ends of said wrist lacing are secured together exteriorly of said hand cover.

A baseball glove comprising a body, a hand cover secured to the back of said body and forming therewith a wrist opening, said hand cover having a pair of wrist flaps that extend towards one another from opposite sides of said opening, a wrist strap disposed beneath said pair of wrist aps and permanently secured to one of them, and a lacing passing through said aps and strap from side to side of said opening and having portions joining said flaps to said body inside of said opening adjacent to said opposite sides thereof.

A baseball glove comprising a body, ahand cover secured to the back of said body and forming therewith a wrist opening, said hand cover having a pair of wrist flaps that extend towards one another from opposite sides of said opening, a wrist strap disposed beneath said pair of wrist 4flaps and permanently secured to one of them, and a lacing passing through said flaps and strap from one side of said opening to the other side thereof and thence back to the rst mentioned side and connecting said hand cover to said body just inside of said opening adjacent to said opposite sides thereof.

A baseball glove comprising a body, a hand cover secured to the back of said body and forming therewith a wrist opening, said hand cover having a pair of wrist flaps that extend towards one another from opposite sides of said opening, a wrist strap disposed beneath said pair of wrist flaps and permanently secured to one of them, and a lacing passing inwardly through said back cover into said body just outside of one side of said opening, thence outwardly from said body just inside of said side of said opening, thence through said flaps and strap from said side of said opening to the other side thereof, thence into said body just inside of said other side of said opening, thence out of said body and through said hand cover just outside of said other side of said opening, and thence through said flaps and straps to said rst mentioned side of said opening where the two ends of said lacing are secured to-V gether exteriorly of said hand cover.

A baseball glove comprising a body including a back cover, a palm cover and padding interposed therebetween, marginal rows of eyelets in said back and palm covers, lacing extending through the eyelets of said back and palm covers Y for securing them together around the margin of said padding, a hand cover mounted on said back cover and forming therewith a wrist opening, said hand cover having marginal extensions sewed to said back cover on opposite sides of said opening and containing the back cover eyelets located just outside of said opposite sides of said opening, said hand cover having a pair of Wrist flaps that extend towards one another from said opposite sides of said opening, a wrist strap disposed beneath said pair of wrist ilaps and sewed to one of them, and a wrist lacing passing through the back cover eyelet just outside of one side of said opening, thence through the back cover eyelet located just REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the le of this patent:
