J. KNOWLES. Combined HorseOollar and Hames. NO. 243,381.
Patented June 28,1881.
' m v i IJVV'E/V'TOR Br flttofneys I I m4 Z 6.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES KNOWLES, OF BELLMONT, ILLINOIS.
COMBINED HORSE COLLAR AND HAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,381, dated June 28, 1881.
Application filed April 5, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES KNOWLES, of Bellmont, in the county of Wabash and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Horse Collar and Hames; and Ido hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which-- Figure l is a front view of a pair of hames, showing the tug-links J foreshortened. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of one of the hames through the tug-link and its elastic bolster or cushion. Fig. 3 is a top view of the pair of hames, and Fig. 4 is a detail View of one of the tug-links detached.
Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to combined horse collars and hames; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A A represent the sides of the hame, the upper ends of which are connected by a hinge, B, the rod of which 0 is provided at its front and rear ends with hooks or loops D E, the rear one of which, E, is provided with a ring or link, F, for 0011- nection with the back-strap of the harness. The lower ends of the sides A A are connected by a strap secured, in the usual manner, to loops G G.
The sides of the hame are provided at or near their outer edges with staples H, forming bearings for the vertical rods I, upon which the tug-links J are adjusted. The latter consist of tubes or cylinders K, having brackets L, provided with eyes M, by which they are adjusted upon the rods I, washers N being interposed so as to adjust the links at the proper elevation. The tubes K, which are closed at (No model.)
their front ends, contain lon gitudinally-slidin g rods 0, provided at their inner ends with disks 1), between which and the closed front ends of said tubes springs Q are interposed, said springs consisting either of spiral coils or rub- 5o ber cushions. The projecting front ends of the rods 0 are hooked and provided with links R, by which the said rods may be connected with the tugs or traces of the harness.
The sides A A of the hames are provided adjoining the tug-links with recesses R, in which rubber cushions S are fitted, as shown, to yield to the pressure of the tug-links when draft is applied, and permit the draft to be in a straight-forward direction from the tuglinks, which could not be if the heme sides were not yielding.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed,
the operation and advantages of myinvention will be readily understood. It is simple in construction, durable and easily applied, while the draft may at all times be readily adjusted by adjusting the washers N. By the elastic tug-links any considerable or injurious strain upon the horses shoulder, as in starting, is avoided, and the cushions S cause the draft to be always in a forward direction from the tug links.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 7 5 and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a hame, the combination, with the hame sides A A, having recesses R and cushions S,
of the spring tug-links J J, arranged as here- JAMES KNOWLES.
Witnesses:
JOHN J. TANQUARY, W. H. KNoWLEs.
