UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MARQUIS DE L. SIVANK AND JASPER T. THORNLEY, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA, ASSIGNORS OF ONE-THIRD TO JOHN A. AWALT, OF SAME PLACE.
GAGE-COCK.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 243,324, dated June 21 1881. Application filed January 31, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we,MARoU1s DE L. SWANK and JASPER T. THORNLEY, of Anderson, in-
the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gage or Try Cocks, which improvement is fully set forth in the followingspeeification and accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side perspective view of the gage-cock, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
The object of our invention is to provide a simple and effective gage or try cock for boilers, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Arepresents the stem or tube, provided with a screw-thread to enable it to be attached to a boiler. The stem has a T-shaped vertical extension, B, with a perforation, D, communicating with the perforation of the stem A. The upper andlower ends of the T-shaped extension are pro vided externally with screw-threads B, to receive the nuts 0 O. A stem, H, passes "ertically through the part B and through the nuts 0, and packing material E is placed around the stem at each end of the T-head, to form a packing for the stem. The upper end of the stem is provided with a head, I, and the lower end has a bore, J, and at the upper end of the bore a perforation, K, communicating with the bore J. A lever, L, pivoted to the outside of the stem is hinged to an arm, the upper end of which is attached to the head I of the stem, so that the stem may be moved up or down, as desired, by means of thelever.
The operation of the gage is simple and easily understood. The stem enters the chambers A and D. As shown in Fig. 2, the perforation K is below the chamber, and will not, therefore, permit the steam to escape through the bore J of the stem. When, however, the stem is raised, as shown in Fig. l by the dotted lines 00, the perforation passes within the chamber D, and the steam is permitted to pass out unobstructedly.
We are aware of the Patent No. 174,344, of March 7, 1876, which'covers a water-cock operated upon a similar principle and foradifferent purpose. Our device being for steam, it is only necessary that a small aperture should connect with the outlet J, and by placing the end of the operating-lever by loose connection upon a line with the longitudinal center of the part A we avoid the necessity of a second lever, and the force is applied to the piston in a nearly direct vertical line.
The construction shown in the patent cited is not sought to be covered in this application.
Having described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a steam-gage cock, the combination of the hollow frame A B, nuts 0, packing E, and perforated piston H K J, as shown, combined with the single lever L, pivoted upon a central line with the part A, and connected to the piston-head by the link M, all constructed and arranged as and for the purposes set fort-h.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we have hereunto set our hands this 28th day of 79 January, A. D. 1881.
MARQUIS DE L. SWANK. JASPER 'l. THOBNLEY.
