Description
De@ 9, 1947' H. v. GALJDETTEA ADJUSTABLE FOLDING TABLE.
Filed Nov. 14, 1945 Patented Dec. 9, 1947 UNHTED STATES PATENT GFFICE ADJUSTABLE FOLDING TABLE Henry V. Gaudette, Los Angeles, Calif. Application November 14, 1945, Serial No. 628,461
2 Claims.
My invention relates to adjustable folding tables of the type used for playing games, or for service of food, and which can be adjusted from the height most convenient for playing games, to a height convenient for a service table, and it has among its salient objects: to provide an adjustable folding table of a type which is rigid and strong when opened out for use, and 'which can be folded into a minimum space for storage or shipment; to provide simplified means for locking it in its open condition for a card or game table, which locking means is most easily released to permit said table to be lowered for a service table; to provide a table of the character referred to which is practical, economical and of fewest parts possible to secure these qualities and which is, therefore, economical to manufacture.
In order to further explain my invention, I have shown on the accompanying sheet of drawings a combination folding table embodying my invention, which I will now describe:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of a table embodying my invention, in its adjusted position for a game table, taken on the section line I-I of Fig. 2;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view, taken on the line 2 2, on Fig. 1, showing the relationship of the leg members when in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 1;
Figure 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3 3, on Fig. 2; and
Figure 4 is a side elevation of the table, partly in section, in its folded condition, on section line I-I of Fig, 2.
Referring now in detail to the dra-wings, I will describe the embodiment of the invention here shown for that purpose. The top of the table is designated 5, and can be of any material or composition desired.
A pair of outer legs, designated 6, S, are pivotally connected with the under side of the to-p, as at l, l, and at their lower ends slightly curved and provided with any desirable feet or floorcontacting means, as may be desired, or left round and smooth.
An inner member 8, here shown in the form of a loop, has its two ends pivotally connected with the underside oi the table top, as at Q, e, and at its lower or connecting bar i9, is provided with a simple turn button I I, which can be turned 'w to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, whereby it catches on a cross axial bai` I2, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3- An intermediate pair of legs, designated I3, I3, are pivotally connected with the first pair of legs 2 6, 6, as at I4, and said outer legs and said intermediate legs I3, I3, are connected by means of an axial bolt I5, extended through said legs, and also through the axial cross bar I2, which is a spacing bar between said intermediate legs I3, I3, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Said intermediate legs I3, I3, are between the loop members and the outer legs 6, 6, and are not connected with the table top, but in the present showing, are turned slightly at I3', so that when the table is let down to the lower, or service position, said turned ends will engage up under said table top, as clearly shown in the lowered position shown in light broken lines in Fig. l. In other words, said table is in its game table position in full lines in Fig. 1, with the turn button or lock II bearing on the cross bar I2, as shown. In order to let the table down to the lower, or service position, shown in the light broken lines, it is only necessary to turn said turn button up, when the table will settle down to the low position shown. This is al1 most easily accomplished by placing the human foot on the curved lower end of one 0f the floor legs, and then the table can be raised or lowered with ease.
I am aware that many diierent and even similar types of folding tables have been made, but they all have their objections, and the main object of this invention is to provide simplified improvements which facilitate the task of folding and adjusting the table for use or for storage, I do not, therefore, limit the invention to the showing made in the drawings, except as I may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
I claim:
1. An adjustable folding table including a table top, a pair of outer legs pivotally connected at their upper ends to said table top, an intermediate pair of legs therebetween pivotally connected with said outer legs, with an axial bar therebetween, and with their upper ends free, a U- shaped member between said intermediate legs having its ends pivotally connected with said table top, and at its sides pivotally connected with said intermediate legs and its free end long enough to move adjacent said axial bar, and an adjustment button on said U-shaped member, moving therewith, and adjustable to engage said axial bar or to move past the same, for holding said table in one position or releasing it to move to the other position.
2. An adjustable folding table including a top, a pair of outer legs pivotally connected at their upper ends to said top, an intermediate pair of legs therebetween and pivotallyconnected with l0 Number members to serve as a stop for holding said table in its highest position.
