UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AMOS STEVENS, OF FAIRFIELD, MAINE.
DEVICE FOR THAWING OUT SlNK-SPOUTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 243,002, dated June 14, 1881.
Application filed March 14, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMOS STEVENS, of Fairfield,-in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented a new and Improved Device for Thawin g Out Sink-Spouts, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to facilitate thawing out sink-spouts or other like pipes in which water is liable to freeze.
The invention consists in certain combinations, which will first be describedin connection with the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1. is a crosssectional elevation of a sink provided with my improved device for thawing out the spout. Fig. 2 is adetail cross-sectional elevation of the upper end of the same. Fig. 3 is a plan of the under side of the strainer upon which the cup rests. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the under side of the cup at the upper end of the device. tion of the top of the strainer, showing the manner in which the cup is held to it.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre spondin g parts.
A pipe, A, of considerable less diameter than the sink-spout B, is passed through this spout, and the lower or outer end of this pipe A is supported by a hook, O, at the end of the spout, so that this pipe is as nearly in the middle of the spout as possible. The upper end of this pipe A is slightly tapered outward, and passes through and is fastened to aplate, D, with a flange, E, projecting downward, and provided with numerous slots or recesses, F, thus forming a strainer, G. This plate D is provided with two segmental slots, H, which are enlarged outward at the opposite ends. The plate D is provided with two segmental ridges, J J, on the under side, which ridges are adjoining the outer edges of the segmental slots H, and increase in thickness from the enlarged end of the segmental slots H.
A cup, K, is provided on the under side with a beveled tubular projection, P, fitting Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional elevainto the upper beveled end of the tube A, and with two lugs, LL, which fit into the slots H in the top plate,D,of the strainer, and have outwardly-projecting flanges M M at the ends. This cup K is provided with a cover, N.
The strainer G rests upon the bottom ofthe sink Q, and the water can flow from the sink through the slots F in the strainer into the spout B. The cup K is placed upon the top plate, D, of the strainer G in such a manner that the flanges M of the lugs L pass through the enlarged part of the slots J, and then the cup is turned from left to right. The flanges M slide up the beveled ridges J J and draw the cup K firmly upon the plate D.
If the water in the sink-spoutB freezes, hot water is poured into the cup K, from where it flows through the pipe A and thaws out the sink-spoutin a short time.
The within-described device can also be used for other pipes in which the water is apt to become frozen.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Gr,substantially as herein shown and described,
and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a device for thawing out pipes, the combination, with the strainer G, having segmental slots H and segmental beveled ridges J, of the cup K, with a central beveled tubular projection, P, and beveled studs L, and of the tube A, substantially as herein shown and de scribed, and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a device for thawing out pipes, the combination, with the inner pipe, A, of the strainer G, to which this pipe is attached, substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
AMOS STEVENS.
Witnesses:
M. D. STRATTON, F. M. AMEs.
. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters
