1 Claim. (Cl. 273) This invention relates to ladies undergarments, and has for its principal object to provide an improved slip having a novel elastic panel in the back portion thereof which imparts to the garment superior fitting qualities and greatly adds to the comfort of the wearer. The present application constitutes a continuation of my copending application Serial No. 615,112, filed September 8, 1945.

In conventional garments of this general character, difficulty is usually experienced in pulling the garment over the head of the wearer, and ii the slip has large enough circumferential dimensions through the waist-encircling portions to easily pass over the shoulders, there is excess material when the garment is in place on the body of the wearer, particularly in the rear waist section and in the area just below such section. There is also a tendency of the garment to bulge at the sides of the waist section and in the area immediately therebeneath.

Some of the foregoing difficulties were corrected in a garment constructed in accordance with my United States Patent No. 2,310,855, which issued on February 9, 1943, the garment of the present invention being an improvement on the garment of such patent.

The slip of the present invention, as well as of my copending application earlier referred to, utilizes an elastic panel of special configuration in the rear waist section which cooperates with the remaining portion of the waist section and the skirt of the garment to give the improved fitting qualities.

More specifically, the rear elastic panel extends laterally in the direction of the front of the garment, and it may even extend across the front although this is not essential. In its central portion it extends to the upper edge of the back of the waist section. Of greater importance is the contour of the lower edge which is provided with spaced, substantially straight, edge sections which coincide generally with the waist line of the garment, and a central section which is defined by two downwardly-extending, generally concavely-curved edge sections which meet at a point on the rear median line substantially below the waist line.

This construction permits a well-fitting garment to easily pass over the shoulders of the wearer, and when it is in plac it clings to the figure and eliminates any bulging.

The present invention also contemplates the provision of a novel skirt or half-slip having an elastic panel of the general configuration described.

The garment of the present invention is provided with attached waist and skirt portions. The blank used in forming the latter is illustrated in Fig. 3, which illustrates one-half the blank. In other words, the blank l0 shown in Fig. 3 is folded along line H which forms the front median line of the garment, the remaining edges of the lank being free. convexly-curved lower edges l2 terminating at points l3. Continuing upwardly from such points the blank has substantially-straight edges is which terminate at points 15. Continuing from points IS the blank is formed with short, convexly-curved edge sections [6 terminating at or about points ll. Continuing from points H the upper edge of the blank has substantiallystraight edge sections 18 terminating at or about points l9. From point I!) the blank has concavely-curved edge sections 20 Which meet at point 2!, which latter point coincides with the front median line of the garment.

The grain line of the material may be varied, depending upon the particular size of garment and other factors, although it is preferred to have edges 14 parallel with the grain of the material. This gives a bias effect to short, curved edge sections I6, and also places the front median line I l of the garment on the bias.

The present invention has particular reference to the formation of the rear of the garment, and accordingly few details of the front waist section are shown. In Fig. 2, however, blanks 24 of more or less conventional shape are joined together alon front vertical stitch line 25 which forms the bust-enclosing front waist section. Along the opposite vertical edges of blanks 24 there are secured blanks 26, thus forming stitch line 21.

Such blanks 26 form the upper rear waist sections of th garment and are provided with convexly-curved edges 22 and substantially-straight upper edges 23.

A pattern of the rear elastic waist insert or panel 28 is shown in Fig. 4. Panel 28 is provided with a substantially-straight upper edge 29 which forms the central upper edge of the waist-encircling portion of the garment. Continuing downwardly from the opposed terminals of edge 29 there are concavely-curved edges 30 which have substantially the same contour as edges 22 of panels 25. Edges 3U terminate at their lower ends at points 3|, and the panel continues downwardly along substantially-straight edges 32 to points 33. 3 cavely-curved edge sections 35 which meet at lowermost central point 36. The characteristic feature of the panel resides in the provision of the central, downwardly-extending, substantiallytriangular portion 31 which largely contributes to the unusual fitting qualities of the garment.

In assembling the garment, blanks 24 and 25 may first be stitched together, and skirt blank I is then stitched together along free edges I4 to form a single, rear, vertical seam 40. Blanks 24 may then be secured to the upper edge of the skirt front. The garment is now ready for the insertion of panel 28. Concave edge sections 30 of the elastic panel 28 are next joined to edges 22 of rear blanks 26 to form stitch lines 43, and edge sections 32 may then be secured either to the lower, opposed, vertical edges of blanks 24 or otherwise, as the front of the garment may be varied in accordance with the knowledge of those skilled in the art. Edge sections 34 and 35 of the elastic panel are then secured to edge sections l8 and I6 of the rear of skirt blank [0 to form stitch lines 46-41. Portions 46 of these stitch lines coincide generally with the Waist line of the garment, whereas portions 41 extend downwardly, thus placing the generally-triangular, lower extension 31 of the elastic insert considerably below the waist line of the garment. The garment may be completed by the usual shoulder straps 49.

It was earlier pointed out that the present invention also contemplates an improved skirt or half-slip. No separate showing of this particular structure is illustrated, although in this case the upper edge of the garment coincides generally with broken line 52 in Fig. 2. In this modification, broken line 52 may correspond generally with the waist line of the garment, and the area of the elastic insert is defined by line 52 and lines 4641.

While two forms or embodiments of the invention have been shown and described herein for illustrative purposes, and the construction and arrangement incidental to two specific applications thereof have been disclosed and discussed in detail, it is to be understood that the invention i limited neither to the mere details or relative arrangement of parts, nor to its specific embodiments shown herein, but that extensive deviations from the illustrated forms or embodiments of the invention may be made without departing from the principles thereof.

What I claim is:

A ladys slip comprising attached Waist and skirt portions and being formed with front and rear sections, the rear skirt section being formed from panels which are joined together to form a single, rear, vertical seam which extends from the lower edge of the garment upwardl to a point below the waist line of the wearer, the upper edges of such panels on each side of such vertical seam being curved convexly upwardly toward such waist line and. continuing generally along the waist line in substantially straight sections, the grain line of the material on each side of the vertical seam being substantially on the straight and the grain line of the material along such curved edge sections being on a bias, and an elastic panel extending across the rear Waist section of the garment and extending to the upper edge of the garment, the lower edge of the elastic panel beingv formed with concavely-curved sections on each side of the center and continuing in substantially straight terminal sections, such lower edge being stitched to the upper edge of the, rear skirt section.
