WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT OEEtcE.
RICHARD H. CUTLER, OF RIOHLAND, IOWA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO F. M. SWEARINGEN, OF SAME PLAOE.
END-GATE AND SCOOP-BOARD FOR WAGONS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,514, dated June '7, 1881.
Application filed March 30, 1581.
of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in EndGates and Scoop- Boards for Wagons; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to end-gates and scoopboards for wagons; and it consists in theconstruction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of wagon with end -gate open.
, Fig. 2 is a side view with end-gate closed, and
3 is an end view of the same.
Like letters indicate like parts.
A representsa combined end-gate and scoopboard, that is attached by T-hinges to the wagon-body A, and rests, when fully let down, on the ledge a. On each side of the end-gate is a segmental side piece, a, to the edge of which is secured a metal rim, that terminates at its forward end in a springpawl, B, which engages with a segmental toothed bar or rack, O, on the side of the wagon. The springpawls B are operatedby a lever,l), on the outer side of each side piece, a, and, by means of handles b b, may be disengaged from the racks O 0 when it is desired to letdown or open the end-gate.
Risers D D are removabl y attached on each Model.)
side of the wagon, and a similar riser, E, is also attached in like manner to the upper part of the end-gate, where it may be secured, if desired, by a hook, c, and staple d. The riser E is provided on each side with a lug or clasp, e, that tits on the outer side of the riser D when the end-gate is closedv A hooked clasp, f, is formed at the upper end of the rack U, and is turned down over the side pieces, a a.
It will be seen that the end-gate may be readily operated by means of the levers b b, so as to bring the pawls B B into engagement with the toothed under surface of the racks O O at such points as to suspend the gate at any desired angle, thus, in connection with the risers l) I) and E, greatly increasing the capacity ot' the wagon. v
The devices constructed as above described are simple, convenient, and effective, and are not liable to get out of order.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the wagon-body A,
I having notched segmental bars 0, of the end-
