Description
" NTTED STATES PATENT OFFIGE.
WILLIAM M. STEVENSON, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES THOMAS; SAID THOMAS ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM W.
HARRIS, BOTH OF SAME PLACE.
FORCE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,486, dated June '7, 1881. Application filed December .23, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. STEVEN- SON, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure I is a perspective view of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the working parts of the pump. Figs. 3 and 4 represent details of construction.
A is a plain straight cylinder, provided at one side with a diagonal conduit, B, extending from the middle to the upper end. This constitutes the discharge-opening from said cylinder or pun'ip-barrel.
C is a second cylinder, about two-thirds of the diameter of the first cylinder, A, and is also about two-thirds the length of the first or outer cylinder. It has a head, 0, with broad flange, which covers the top end of first cylin; der, A, and its discharge-opening. and is firmly bolted thereon. The said second cylinder, 0, thereby hangs suspended within the first cylinder, as seen in Fig. 2.
D is a plunger, which consists oi a large hollow bulb having a long hollow neck, 11, which plays through the head of the cylinder C. To the lower end of said neck is attached a hollow cage-like extension, E, to the lower end of which is attached a suction-valve, F. This valve consists ofa cup-shaped leather disk, f,in which are placed two metal disks, 9 and h, and lying over said disks h is a leather disk, 2
which is the valve proper, as it covers a series ot' openings,j, through the aforesaid disks 1" g h. The said bulb with its neck-extension and valve are secured together by a central rod, k, reaching from top to bottom, and having a nut on the lower end. To the top end of said rod k is attached the connecting-rod I, from the pump-handle m above. At thejunction of the neck d with the extension E is placed a packing-disk, c, which plays in the cylinder C.
The aforesaid bulb and neck form the airchamber of this pump.
The lower end of the cylinder A is provided with a common clapper-valve, a.
From the discharge-opening B rises the discharge-pipe l). v
The above-described working portion of the pump is located down in the well, near the water-supply.
Acheck-valve, o, is placed in the dischargepipe, below freezing-point, to prevent water standing in the pipe, and thus prevent its becoming clogged by freezing.
The upper end of discharge-pipe has a curved discharge-neck.
The operation of this pump is obvious lrom the foregoing. It works with great ease, and
forces water to great distances or heights without extra exertion, for the reason that the airchamber and plunger are comprised in one device, and although apparently heavy this does not add to the power or force required to opcrate the pump, but on the other hand assists it by the elasticity of the air within the chant her.
The liability of leakage of air from the airchamber, as in pumps with the air-chamber lo cated on the outside of the pump, is entirely overcome, because the connections of this airchamber are inside of the cylinders and have no possible connection with the outside atmos phere.
Having described my invention, I claim- In a hydraulic force-pump, the cylinder A, provided with the valve 0-, and having the side diagonal discharge-opening B, the second cylinder, C, the plunger consisting of the bulb D, having neck (I, the open extension E, and packing c, and the valve F, composed of the leather ,disk f, metal disksg IL, and leather disk i, I constructed and combined to operate as specified.
WM. M. STEVENSON.
