Description
June A10, 1947. c. c. BRADEN RIVVET BUCKING TOOL Filed Jan. 18, 1944 Invntor '0f/gems 5251051/ 5 w w n Patented June 10, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
number of different heads may be selectively employed to meet the varying requirements of use.
An object of the present invention is to provide an improved riveting tool of the above kind which is durable and efiicient in operation, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
The invention consists in the novel form, comination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characte-rs indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure l is an elevational view of a bucking tool embodying the present invention.
Figure 2 is a plan View thereof with the bucking head removed.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section taken on line 3--3 of Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, the present riveting or bucking tool consists generally of a bucking head BA and a holder I-I therefor, the bucking head having an elongated squared shank 5, and the holder having a polygonal socket 6 for removable reception of said shank 5 of the bucking head.
The holder shown embodies a socket of the box type 1 whose socket 6 is of star shape for a purpose well known in the wrench art and later explained herein with respect to the bucking heads. An upwardly and laterally curved integral shank 8 is provided on the socket 1, the outer end of which shank is enlarged and provided With a reduced threaded extension, as at 9. The threaded extension 9 is detachably threaded in one end of a main shank section of a handle indicated at I l) and consisting of a section of pipe whose outer end is externally threaded and has one end of a coupling sleeve II screwed thereon, as at I I. A solid head I2 is provided on the outer end of the handle to add weight thereto when desired, said head having a reduced threaded stem I3 screwedinto the outer end portion of coupling sleeve I I. The socket 6 of socket memher 'l is of a size to snugly receive and have nonrotating engagement with the shank 5 of the bucking head B, the star shape of socket 6 permitting engagement with the shank 5 in any one of many different positions of rotary adjustment of the shank 5 with respect to the socket mem ber l. Thus, the relation of the holder to the bucking head may greatly vary while permitting engagement of the socket member 'l with the shank 5 oi' the bucking head. Socket member 1 has a set screw I4 which may be threaded inwardly to impinge the shank 5 of the bucking head and thereby secure the latter in the socket during use. The handle of the holder shown in Figures 1 to 3, inclusive, may be provided with an extension when a longer handle is desired. This is simply done by removing the head I2 and threading another tubular shank section Illa into the outer end of coupling sleevel I.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that the construction and manner of use, as Well as the advantages of the present invention, will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art. It is noted that the present tool is especially adapted for use in bucking aluminum or like rivets, such as are used in aircraft construction and which can be upset by the use of a bucking tool of light weight.
What I claim as new is: A rivet bucking tool comprising a bucking head having an elongated squared shank, and a holder for said fbucking head including a box-type socket member having a star-shaped socket and provided at one side with an upwardly and laterally curved relatively short shank formed with a reduced threaded outer end, a handle including a tubular section having the outer end of said shank removably threaded in one end thereof, a coupling sleeve removably threaded on the outer end of said tubular section, and a solid plug weight having a reduced threaded end screwed into the outer end of said coupling sleeve, said shank of the bucking head being longitudinally adjustable through said socket, and a set screw carried by said socket for securing the shank of the bucking head -in adjusted positions.
