As the screw is carried by the saddle I8 it will be clear that when the screw is tightened it will secure the saddle in the desired adjusted position along the ways. A similar screw 48, having a hand piece 49 is carried by the base II) and is adapted to be tightened against the vertical ways 36 to lock the knee 32 in the desired position of Vertical adjustment.
Cutter head I4 comprises a metal body 50 including a dove-tail shaped part 5| at its inner or rear side iitted in Vertical ways 52 on the upper forward portion of the base. Body 5I) mounts, for rotary movement, a spindle 53 extending beyond both sides of the body and at one end mounting a chuck 55 and at its other end having fixed thereon a stepped pulley 55. Mounted on and turnable about the spindle 53 intermediate the ends of body 50 is a toothed element or quadrant 56 having its teeth meshing with those of a rack 51 fixed to the forward face of the upper portion of the base, preferably in the ways 52.
A handle or lever 58 is fixed to the element 55 and extends to a convenient location for manual operation. By grasping the lever 58 and swinging it upwardly or downwardly the element 56 is turned about the spindle 53 as a pivot and its teeth meshing with those of the rack 51 the element rides on the rack and the entire cutter head I 4 is moved upwardly or downwardly on the ways 52.
A part 59 fixed to the upper end of the base Iii includes a projection 6I) through which passes a vertically disposed screw 6I fixed to the cutter head. Nuts 52 and B3 on said bolt at the upper and lower sides, respectively, of said projection are adjustable on the bolt and comprise stops to limit the vertical movements that may be imparted to the cutter head by the lever 58. It is to be understood that the nuts 62 and 63 are adjusted on the bolt 6I in accordance with any particular work to be performed.
The upper portion of body 59 is provided with a socket 54 and therebeyond is provided with a split 65. The socket receives an arm 66 the outer end of which supports a member 61 mounting an end bearing element 58 for the outer end of a milling cutter arbor 69. Member 51 is secured in the desired position of adjustment along the arm 66 by tightening of a screw 10. The inner end of the cutter spindle 69 is received in the chuck 54 and thus the cutter 1I is firmly mounted for rotary movement. Here it is noted that on tightening of screws 12 the split portion of the body 55 is drawn closed and the sides of the socket 64 grip 0r clamp the arm 66.
A rack 'I3 is pivotally connected with the lower side of the body 5|] at 11| and passes into the base I0 through an opening 15. In the lower portion of the base below the cutter head is a. weight to which a vertically extending rack 11 is pivotally connected at 18. Between and meshing with the teeth of each of the racks 13 and 11 is a pinion 19 rotatably mounted by a shaft 8! supported by a bracket 8 I,
With this construction it will be clear that as the cutter head is moved on the ways 52 the rack 13 will be raised or lowered (depending on the movement imparted to the cutter head) and acting through the pinion 19 wil1 cause a movement of the rack 11 in the reverse direction. The latter rack being connected therewith, the weight will be moved and serves to counter-balance the cutter head and retain it in the position to which it is moved by manipulation of lever 53.
It is here noted that the cutter head supports 4 the milling cutter 1I over the work support I3 and that the cutter head is mounted for vertical movement to carry the cutter toward and from said work support. Bolts 82 on the cutter head are for the purpose of securing in place a housing or guard (not shown) for the pulley 55. In the ways 52 is a gib 83 adapted to'be adjusted by manipulation of a screw 84 (see Fig. 2). The other ways of the machine are similarly equipped.
Stepped pulley 55, and consequently the spindle 53 to which said pulley is fixed, is driven from a motor` 85 located in the lower rear portion of the base I0. The motor is mounted on a platform 85 pivoted at 81 and including a portion 88 carrying a pin 89 disposed in an inclined slot 95 in a part 9| adapted to be fed back and forth on a screw 92. As the part 9| is moved in one direction or the other the platform 85 will be rocked about the pivot 81 to raise and lower the motor 85.
From a stepped pulley 93 on the motor shaft 94 a belt 95 drives a stepped pulley 96 fixed on an intermediate shaft 91. The latter is rotatably mounted in a back 98 located between the upper and lower arms 99 and |50, respectively, of a support IIlI carried by a back plate |52 secured to the rear upper portion of the base. Preferably support IUI is located in a horizontal line between the upper and lower ends of the ways 52.
However a. simple means is provided to maintain a fixed center distance between spindle 53 and shaft 91. Such means includes a part I (I8 about the reduced portion I 05 of block 98 and a means |59, comprising parts IIEI and I|I clamped about a vreduced portion H2 on the quadrant 55 (see Fig. Ll). Parts IIEI and III are connected at the upper side of the spindle by a screw I I3 and at the lower side of the spindle by a reduced portion I I4 of a member I I5 passing through both parts.
At the rear side of part III member II 5 includes a shoulder I I6 bearing against said part and at the front side of the part IIiI the member II5 is threaded and receives a nut II 1 which when tightened draws the shoulder II5 against part I I I and the nut is then permanently pinned in place thus securing parts III) and ||I together. Member I|5 also includes an internally threaded tubular portion I I8.
A member IIB has a flattened end portion |29 secured by bolts IZI to the lower portion of part |58 and this member also includes a shank portion |22 threaded into the tubular portion IIS of the member II5. Thus the means comprising the part |58, the means |69 and the threadedly connected members II5 and II9 serves to connect the shaft 91 and the spindle 53 and to maintain them in fixed spaced relation.
Should it be desired to shift the belt 95 to different steps of the pulleys 93' and 96 the belt may be slacked by raising: the motor 85 on proper manipulation` of the screw =92; After the belt is shifted the screw is again manipulated to return the. motor to position with the belt tightened. In like manner should it be desired to shift the belt IDI to different steps of the pulleys 55 and IUE a suitablev tool is applied to the squared end |234 of the member II5 to rotate it and bring about a further telescoping; of the members II5 and II9 drawing the blockwBB. forwardly on support: III'Iv and` slacking the belt` IIII.
After the belt has been shifted as desired' the member I I5 is rotated in the opposite direction to shift the block 93 backwardly on the support IUI to again tighten the belt. It will be understood that, the screw 52 and the member I:I5 may be manipulated to bring about tightening of the respective belts should they become stretched in use.
Pulleys |06 and 55 are held on the shaft 97 and spindle 53 by nutsi221 and |25 respectively. For changes in the speed at which the spindle 53 is driven the mentionedY nuts may be removed and the positions of the pulleys reversed, applying pulley `55 to shaft 9'! and pulley |06 to spindle 53 after which the nuts are replaced. Preferably the nuts are knu-rled for ease of manipulation. With the disclosed construction the pulleys 55 and |06 may be readily replaced with other pulleys of desired ratio.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple and effective means for counter-balancing the cutter head I4 with the weight 16. In addition it will be seen` that I have provided an effective belt drive from the motor 85 to the spindle 5-3 and have provided means whereby the .shifting of' the center of the spindle as the cutter head isV moved vertically is compensated for so that there is no needto stretch the driving belt in order to effect a belt drive of the cutter" spindle and yet` have the cutter head shiftable vertically.
As the cutter headl moves out of horizontal alignment with the shaft 9-'I (during use of the machine) and the center distance between the spindle 53 and the shaftl 91 tends to increase the said shaft is moved horizontally forwardly. On reverse movement of the cutter headv as the cen;- ter distance tends to decrease between the spindle and shaft the latter is moved rearwardly on the support IUI.
Thus as the cutter head is moved from horrzontal alignment with the shaft 91l and` moved back into such alignment the center distance between the spindle 53` and the shaft 9-1 remains constant, movement of said shaft compensating for any change of the distance between the center of the spindle and any Xed part of the shaft support,A i. e. support IBI. Therefore the belt drive of the spindle is effected from. the motor 85 without imposing stretching strain on the belt but with the latter in any predetermined degree of tension.
Having thus set forth the nature of my invention, what I claim is:

In a hand type milling machine, a hollow stationary base, a cutter head, means mounting the cutter head on. the outer side of the base for vertical movements relative thereto, means for moving the cutter head vertically, a spindle mounted for rotary movement by the cutter head, amotor on the' base, a belt drive from the motor to said spindle comprising a shaft in the base, pulleys fixed on said shaft, a belt in the base and driving one of said pulleys from the motor, a belt extending to the outer side of the base and driving said spindle from another of said pulleys, rigid means comprising a pair of rigid screw threaded parts connecting said shaft and spindle and maintaining them in fixed spaced relation and adapted to impart movement from one to the other, one of said parts exposed for manipulation from the outer side of the base for adjusting the position of said shaft to vary the distance between the centers of the spindle and shaft, and means mounting said shaft in said base for movement by said rigid means to compensate for the shifting of the center of the spindle as the cutter head is moved vertically.

In a hand type milling machine, a base, a cutter head, means mounting the cutter head on the base for vertical movements, means for moving the cutter head vertically, a spindle rotatably mounted by the cutter head, a motor on said base, a belt drive from the motor to the spindle comprising a support including spaced upper and lower members, a block on the support between said members, flanges on the block at the side edges of the members and preventing lateral displacement of the block from between the members, a shaft rotatably supported by said block, pulleys Xed on said shaft, a belt driving one of said pulleys from the motor, a belt driving the spindle from another of said pulleys, rigid means connecting the spindle and block and thus maintaining the spindle and shaft in xed spaced relation and adapted to impart movement from one to the other,and said support mounting said block and thereby the shaft for movement by said rigid means to compensate for the shifting of the center of the spindle as the cutter head is moved vertically,

In a hand type milling machine, a base, a cutter head, means mounting the cutter head on one side of the base for vertical movements, means for moving the cutter head vertically, a spindle rotatably mounted by the cutter head, a motor on said base, a belt drive from the motor to the spindle comprising a support including spaced upper and lower members, a block on the support between its members, flanges on the block at the side edges of the members and preventing lateral displacement of the block from between the members, a shaft rotatably supported by the block, pulleys fixed on the shaft, a belt driving one of the pulleys from the motor, a belt driving the spindle from another of said pulleys, rigid means connecting the spindle and block and thus maintaining the spindle and shaft in fixed spaced relation and adapted to impart movement from one to the other, and said support mounting said block and thereby the shaft for horizontal movement by said rigid means toward and from said side of the base to compensate for shifting of the center of the spindle as the cutter head is moved vertically.

In a hand type milling machine, a base, a cutter head, means mounting said cutter head on one side of the base for vertical movements, means for moving the cutter head vertically, a spindle rotatably mounted by the cutter head, a motor on the base, a belt drive from the motor to the spindle comprising a shaft, pulleys xed to said shaft, a belt driving one of said pulleys from the motor, a belt driving the spindle from another of said pulleys, rigid means connecting the shaft and spindle and maintaining them in xed spaced relation and adapted to impart movement from one to the other, and means mounting said shaft for horizontal movements by said rigid means toward and from said side of the base to compensate for the shifting of the center of the spindle as the cutter head is moved vertically.

In a hand type milling machine, a base, a cutter head, means mounting the cutter head on the base for vertical movements, means for imparting vertical movements to the cutter head, a chuck receiving spindle in said head and mounted thereby for rotating movement, a pulley on said spindle, a motor on said base, a block to one side of said spindle, a shaft mounted by said block, means mounting said block for horizontal movement toward and from the plane of movement of said spindle, pulleys on said shaft, a belt drive from the motor to one of the shaft mounted pulleys, a belt drive from another of the shaft mounted pulleys to the spindle mounted pulley, and rigid means connecting the block and cutter head and maintaining them and said shaft and spindle in predetermined spaced relation and serving as vertical movement is imparted to the cutter head to impart horizontal movement to the block.

In a hand type milling machine, a base, a cutter head, means mounting the cutter head on the base for vertical movements, means for moving the cutter head vertically, a spindle mounted for rotary movement by the cutter head, a motor on said belt, a belt drive from the motor to the spindle comprising a support including upper and lower members, a block on the support between the members, means preventing lateral displacement of the block from between the members, a shaft rotatably supported by said block, pulleys fixed on the shaft, a belt driving one of the pulleys from the motor, a belt driving the spindle from another of the pulleys, a tubular extension on one end of the block, a means about said extension, means about said spindle and in which the latter turns, a .part at right angles to said shaft and secured fast to the means about said tubular extension and having a screw thread, a part turnable in the means about the spindle and at right angles to the latter and threaded to the rst mentioned part, means preventing longitudinal movement of the second mentioned part relative tothe means about the spindle, said parts adapted to be adjusted on their screw threaded connection to adjust the distance between the spindle and shaft centers, and said support mounting said block and thereby the shaft for movement by said parts to compensate for the shifting of the center of the spindle as the cutter head is moved vertically.
