Description

(ModeL) R. BUTTER. Wagon Brake.
Patented May 24, I881.
mvm'mm ATTORNBY WITNESSES brake-shoes H, and is connected with the body UNITED: STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WAGON- BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 242,050, dated May 24, 188.1.
Application filed March 25, 1881. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern- Be it known that I, ROBERT BUTTER, of Dillon, in the county of Beaver Head and Territory of Montana, have invented a new Improvement in Wagon-Brakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of my improvement, shown as applied to a wagon. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the brakeroller and its attachments. Fig. 3 is a seetional elevation of the same, taken through the line mm, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of a part of the brake, the lever being shown in crosssection. Fig.5 is an elevation of a part of the brake-lever.
The object of this invention is to improve the construction of the wagon-brakes known as the California or Roller brakes in such a manner that they can be reversed to bring the brake-lever upon the right or left side of the wagon, according as the brake is to be put on? by a man riding the left-hand wheel-h orse or by a driver riding in the wagon.
The invention consists in the combination, with the brake-roller and the axle-clips that carry the said roller, of a hooked bar placed between the parts of the clip-yokes and hooked around the roller within its bearings, so that the clip-yokes can be detached from the brake roller to allow the said roller to be reversed and also in constructing the brake-lever with a lip upon each side .to adapt it to engage with the catch-bar when placed at either side of the wagon-body, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A represents the fore wheels, B the rear wheels, 0 the forward axle, D the rear axle, E the reach, and F the body, of an ordinary freight-wagon.
G is the brake-bar, which is provided with or running-gear of the wagon in the ordinary manner.
To the brake-bar G is attached the forward end of a connecting-rod, I, the rear end of which is hinged to the lower end of a downwardly-projecting arm, J, formed upon or rigidly attached to the brake roller K. The brake-roller K works in hearings in the forward ends of the yokes L of the axle-c1ips, the bows M of whieh'pass around the rear axle, D. The
bows M.
yokes L are formed of bars bent at their middle parts to form eyes or hearings to receive the roller K. The end parts of the bars that form the yokes L pass back together, and are secured to the arms of the bows M.
Both arms of the yoke-bars L may be secured to both arms of the bows M, or the upper arms of the said yoke-bars may be secured to both arms of the said bows and the lower arm of the yoke-bars may be secured to only the forward arms of the bows. The latter arrangement is shown in Fig. 3.
The roller K is kept from longitudinal movementin the bearings of the yokes L by a collar, N, formed upon the said roller near its end, and by an elliptical or cross head, 0, formed upon the end of the said roller K. The other end of the rollerK is bent upward to form an arm, P, to the end of which is hinged the rear end of the conneeting'rod Q.
The bearings for the roller K are bent upward above the level of the lower side of the axle D to raise the roller K out of the way of the coupling-chains when two or more wagons are coupled together. The bearin gs for the roller K are made so large that the one hearing can be passed over the head 0 upon one end of the roller K and the other bearing can be passed around the bend at the other end of the said roller.
The'bearings of the yokes L are made to fit the roller K by the bars R, placed between the arms of the said yokes L, and the rear ends of which are placed upon the arms of the clip- The forward ends of the bars R are bent into hook form to fit into the bearings of the said yokes L and around the said roller K. With this construction, when the yokes L and hook-bars R have been detached from the bows M the yokes L can he slipped 011' the hookbars R laterally and then slipped off the roller K, so that the said roller K can be reversed to bring the arm P to the other side of the wagonbody F.
The forward end of the connecting-rod Q is hinged to the brakelever S, the lower end of which is. hinged to the wagon-body F. The lever S passes up between the wagon-body F and the catch-bar T, the ends of which are bent upward and have lugs formed upon them to receive the bolts by which the said catchbar is secured to the wagon-body F.
Upon the inner side of the catch-bar T are formed ratchet-teeth, with which engages a lip, U, formed upon the lever S, to hold the said lever in place when applying the brake. The lever S is made with a lip, U, upon each side, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, so that the catch-bar '1 and lever S can be placed at the right-hand side of the wagon-body when the brake is to be put on by a driver riding in the wagon, and can be placed at the left-hand side of the wagon when the brake is to be put on by a jerk-cord operated by a man riding upon the near wheel-horse.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a wagon-brake, the combination, with the brake-roller K and the axle-clips L M, of the hook-bars R, placed between the parts of the clip-yohes L, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the clip-yokes can be 20 with a lip, ll, upon each side, substantially as 25 herein shown and described, to adapt the said lever to be placed upon either side of the wagon-body, as set forth.
