LINK FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,791, dated May 24, 1881.

Application filed April 2, 1881.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD M. GRANDAL, of the cityof Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Link Fences, of which the following is a specification.

My presentimprovementhas reference to the construction of that kind of link fences wherein the links are formed of doubled and twisted lengths of wire; and its nature will be understood from the following description, reference being had to the accompanyingdrawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which- Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, plan and side views of a portion of my improved fence. Fig. 3 is a view ofalonger portion thereof upon a smaller scale. Fig. 4. shows one of the links before it has been twisted.

The links A of this fence are formed of single pieces or lengths of wire, each half of which is doubled upon itself, so as to bring the two ends together at the center and convenient for splicing. Thelinksarecoupled togetherchainfashion at the time of or before being twisted, as will be understood from the drawings.

The form of the splice of the ends is not material; but I recommend what is known as the telegraph-splice, or something analogous to it. The points a a are preferably left looking in such directions that when the link is drawn out and twisted they will be firmly locked against untwistin g by the portion a of the link, which the twist brings up against the splice. This fully appears in the drawings.

After the link or a number of links have been brought to the stage of manufacture illustrated in Fig. 4, I twist them by any proper twisting mechanism, using at such time, or previously, an amount of tension upon them which will draw them out to their full length, and they then assume the appearance given in Figs. 1 and 2, with the eyes a at their extremities interlocking with the like eyes in their neighbors. I thus form a junction of the links which is scarcely observable in the finished fence, because it conforms very closely in appearance to the plain twisted portions of the links. When closely twisted, so that the eyes a are contracted, a form of joint is obtained which will not kink.

Whatever of yield under, tension there may be in the splice of the ends of the links is taken up before the twist is completed, so that in the finished links there will be no more stretch than in the same length of fence formed of continuous wires.

I claim The fence composed of the coupled and twisted links A, the halves whereof are doubled upon themselves and the points spliced at the middle of the links, substantially as specified.
