AIR-CUSHION COMPRESSION- SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters CYLINDER FOR GANG-SAyVS.
Patent No. 241,701, dated May 17, 1881.
Application filed October 4, 18H0. (No model.)
I0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. NIcHoLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county ,of Clinton and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Combination of Air-Cushion Comwhich the following is a specication.
My invention consists in the combination of air-compression cylinders for operating the pressure-rollers of gan g-saws with an air-compression cylinder, which is combined with the gang-sash by means of suitable pipes, as here' inafter fully described.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure l is a side elevation of a gang of saws and parts connected therewith, one of the side frames, A, being removed. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a section, on an enlarged scale, through the central vertical plane of the aircushion compression-cylinders g and Z l. Fig. 4, Sheet No. 2, is a side elevation of the saws and parts in connection, with one of the side frames, A, removed, and the compression-cylinders l l omitted, the pressure-rollers n n being operated by gearing in the usual manner. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the same.
Like letters of reference in all the iigures indicate the same parts.
A A, Figs. l and2, represent side permanent frames, between which the gang-saws B have their up and down movements. These saws are connected with the reciprocating sash b in the usual manner. The sash has its vertical movements in the slides c c, connected with the frames A A, and is operated bymeans of the pitman d and crank e.
For the purpose of assisting in checking and reversing the movements of the sash b, and preventing the jars incidental to its quick reciprocating movements, and consequently relieving the crank-shaft of a large amount of strain, I combine with the sash an air-cushion compression-cylinder, g, which is permanently connected with the cap-plate A of the frames A A. The cylinder is provided with a piston, h, having a rod, f, connected with the upper end of the sash, in the middle thereof, and has any suitable number of openings, i, through its wall for the admission of air into each end as the opposite end of the piston passes the openings, thereby forming an air-compression cushion for the piston at each end of its stroke. As the air is compressed in each end of the cylinder g, it is thereby forced through the pipes lc 7c into the air-cushion compression-cylinders l l, (as more clearly illustrated in the enlarged sectional view, Fig. 3,) and, acting on the pistons m m, forces the rollers n n connected with the lower ends of the piston-rods j" j" down upon the timber to be sawed or raises them up, as may be desired. The action of the pistons is controlled by means of the valves o o, operated bythe levers pp. The pressure is controlled by means of suitable safety-valves q q. The escape of the air is prevented by the .Check-valves r r.
The compression-cylinders l l, for operating thepressure rollers of gan g-saw mills, form the subject of another application of the same date as the present application. Therefore a further description is deemed unnecessary in set forth in another application ot' corresponding date to this.
I claim as my invention- The combination, with the air-cushion compression-cylinder g, having inlets i and piston h, the air-cushion compression-cylinders Z l, having pistons m m and rods fj', the connection `between the said cylinders g and l l being ,made bymeans of the pipes la k, having valves o q r, for giving a yielding force to the rollers n n, substantially as described.
GEORGE W. NICHOLS.
