Description

(No Model.) T. GILFILLAN, .E. J. BONETT & A. W. FLANDERS Book Back.
No. 241,645. Patented May 17,11881.
. UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS GILFILLAN, EDWIN J. BONETT, AND ALBERT W. FLANDERS, OF
BARNET, VERMONT.
BOOK-RACK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,645, dated May 1'7, 1881. Application filed J annary 7, 1881. (No model.) i
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS GILFILLAN, EDWIN J BONETT, and ALBERT W. FLAN- DERS, all of Barnet, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Racks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View of one of the sides of the rack-frame. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the complete rack with the shelves inserted. Fig. 3 is a plan of one of the shelves detached, and Fig. 4 represents the ban ger-roll detached.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre' sponding parts in all the figures.
Our invention relates to portable book-racks; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter described. and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, a a are the standards of the side frames, which are connected by two or more parallel cross-dowels, 0 c, for supporting the detachable shelves.
- d d are cross-bars for preventing the books placed upon the shelves from falling out at the sides. I
m is the hanger-roll, which is a bar of wood tenoned at both ends, as shown in Fig. 4, and inserted into holes in the side standards, a a.
k 70 are the shelves, which, as well as the hanger-r011 m, may be of any suitable length, and are notched at each corner, as shown at r.
To put up the rack the sideframes, a a a a, are first connected by the ban ger-roll m. Two screw-hooks are inserted into the wall a suitable distance apart, and the roll suspended across these. If screw-eyes are used instead of hooks the rod or roll on should be inserted through the eyes first, after which the side frames are attached. The shelves are then placed in position between the standards of the side frames, resting at both ends upon the dowels 0 c with the notches r r bearin g against the side standards, a a, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
By extending the front standards, a a, down to an even length with rear standards, a a, the rack may, instead of bein g suspended, be placed upon the floor, desk, table, or other suitable support. 7
The notched shelves k, inserted into the. rack in the manner described, strengthen and brace the whole structure by binding the several parts of the frame firmly together.
To take the rack down for packing, lift out the shelves, take out the hanger rod or roll, when the whole structure will come apart and can be packed eonvenientlyin a fiat box. We have found by actual experiment that a rack of four shelves can be put together and hung up in forty-five seconds, and can be taken down ready for packing in fifteen seconds.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secnre by Letters Patent of the United States- The described portable book-rack, composed of two side frames consisting each of parallel standards a a, connected by the shelf dowels or supports 0 and cross-bars d, detachable connecting-rod or hanger-roll m, and detachable shelves k, notched on opposite sides, as shown at r, a short distance from each corner, the whole constructed and combined substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto afiixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS GILFILLAN. EDWIN JOHNSON BONETT. ALBERT WELLINGTON FLANDERS.
