1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a row-boat propelling device and has for an object to provide means whereby a boat may be rowed in the direction the rower is facing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a sectional oar connected by a set of gears.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined car and oar lock.
Other features and advantages will become more readily apparent from the following description and the accompanying illustrative drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved oar construction, the upper casing being removed,
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof shown attached to a section of a boat,
Figure 3 is a section view taken on line 3--3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4 is an end elevation of the device, and
Figure 5 is a sectional view taken on line 5-5 of Figure 2.
In the above enumerated drawings and in the following specification like reference characters denote like parts throughout and in which 10, refers to my improved oar operating mechanism in which I l, is a supporting plate secured to the gunwale I2, of a boat by bolts 13, there being provided in the plate il, a sufficient series of apertures I4, in order that the device may be adjusted in height relative to the upper edge l5 of the gunwale l2.
The plate H, is provided with spaced parallel ears l6 and, i1, projecting from its upper edge 18, which ears are provided with aligning bores l9 and 20, to receive the ends 2| and 22, of a bolt 23, projecting through the elongated bore 24, extending through the depending boss 25, formed on the transverse central under portion 26, of a pivot plate 21.
Pivotally mounted upon the upper side of the plate 21 on opposite sides of the boss 25, are segmental gears and 3|, each having a relatively wide outwardly extending shanks 32 and 33, respectively, which shanks have their outer terminals 34 and 35, respectively, welded to tubular sockets 36 and 31. The end tube 31, is adapted to receive the shank (not shown) of the blade end of an oar which shank may be fixed in the tube in any suitable manner. The tube 36, is adapted to receive an operating handle (not shown).
The gears 30 and 3!, are pivotally connected to the plate 21, by pins 31 and 38, having enlarged flat heads 39 and, 40, and reduced threaded ends 4| and 42, which project through bores 43 and 44, in the plate 21, and are secured by nuts 45 and 46.
The teeth 41 and 48, of the respective gears intermesh so that when the handle receiving socket'36, is moved in one direction the blade supporting socket 31, will move in the same direction whereby in operating a pair of cars formed in accordance with the above described device, a boat will be driven in the direction in which the rower faces. A guard plate 49, is provided for the gears 30 and. 3|, the flanges 50, of which are secured to plate 21 by screws 5!.
It is thought that persons skilled in the art to which the invention relates will be able to obtain a clear understanding of the invention after considering the description in connection with the drawings. Therefore, a more lengthy description is regarded as unnecessary.
Minor ,changes in shape, size and rearrangementof details and parts such as come within the purview of the invention claimed may be resorted. to, in actual practice, if desired.
Having now described my invention that which I claim as new and desire to procure by Letters Patent is:
A bow facing oar attachment for a row boat comprising a supporting plate adapted to be bolted to the side of a gunwale of a boat, upwardly extending spaced parallel ears at opposite ends of the supporting plate, said ears being provided with aligning openings, a rock plate, a transversely extending boss depending from the rock plate midway between the ends, said boss having a longitudinal opening extending therethrough, a pivot pin extending through the openings in the ears and the boss pivotally to support the rock plate on the supporting plate, intermeshing gear segments pivotally supported on the upper side of the rock plate, the axes of the gear segments being equally spaced from opposite sides of the boss, a radially extending socket carried by each gear segment, a cover extending across the gear segments to enclose the upper sides of the toothed portions thereof and depending side flanges on the cover for detachable connection to opposite side edges of the rock plate whereby the toothed portions of the gear segments may be wholly enclosed.
