11 Claims. (01. 158-91) My invention relates to an improvement in pot type burners and has for one purpose to provide improved means for hydrocarbon burner.
Another purpose is to provide improved means for supplying secondary air to the mixture of vaporized hydrocarbon and primary air, in a hydroxylating, pot type burner.
Another purpose is to obtain silent combustion.
Other purposes will appear from time to time in the course of the specification and claims.
My invention is illustrated more or less dia grammatically in the accompanying drawing,

Referring to the drawing, i generally indicates an outer housing having a plurality of feet 2 between which are air inflow spaces 5. The housing is partly closed by a horizontal partition 4 centrally apertured as at E. t is an angle ring which receives the upper outwardly extending flange 8 of the burner pot i. a indicates an upper portion of the housing 6, which serves as a combustion chamber, or a heat radiating member. Any suitable draft means, not herein shown, may be provided for disposing of the heated gases and by-products of combustion. The pot l includes a shoulder portion 36 which is shown as lying in a plane generally perpendicular to the axis of the pot. The shoulder portion terminates in a cylindrical pot portion 3|, preferably coaxial with the axis of the lower pot portion 1. The cylindrical portion 3! terminates in the flange 8.

It will be understood that whereas I have shown a vertically axised pot, the pot may be horizontally axised or the axis may be variously inclined in relation to the vertical.
It will be understood that in pot type burners of the present type, a liquid hydrocarbon is vaporized by the heat of combustion taking place in or above the pot. The liquid hydrocarbon is admitted to the interior of the pot and is initiallypartially vaporized by the heat of hydroxylation taking place in the pot. As the liquid hydrocarbon is vaporized in the pot, it rises and is surrounded by a film of secondary air. The radiant heat from this combustion supplies the remainder of the additional heat necessary to vaporize all of the liquid hydrocarbon. There is a differentiation in action between the s-o-called primary air and the so-called secondary air admitted to the interior of the pot. With reference to the present structure,'the air entering through the primary apertures l3 has a different action than the air entering through the secondary apertures 24 which are located in the circumferential pot wall portion 3!. Ad of the oxygen in the air entering through the primary apertures I3 is fully consumed in the process of hydroxylation. The oxygen in the air entering through the secondary apertures 24 is only partially consumed, but all of the vaporized hydrocarbons surrounded by the secondary air are entirely consumed,
When fuel is being supplied to the pot for a high fire, combustion takesplace at a level debustion. I employ for example the single row of secondary air inlets 24 which are made to direct ietsof air upwardly and inwardly toward the axis of the pot, by the employment of additional apertures 33 in the wall portion 30, which direct impinging jets ofeir, against the jets passing walls 30a and 3la. In the wall 3la I provide a row of secondary air inlet apertures 320, shown as is indicated at I having axes inclined toward the open end of the pot. In the wall 30a I provide a row of inlet apertures 33a. The wall 30a is inclined and the axes of the apertures 33a are shown as perpendicular to the wall 30a. The result is a projection of jets of air toward the apertures 32a.
It will be understood that, in connection with the forms of Figs. 2 and 3, the inlets 32 and 32a may have, at choice, axes perpendicular to the axis of the pot or inclined toward the open end of the pot. An advantage of the form of Fig. 3 is that tilting the axes of the apertures 83a is unnecessary, since the wall 304; may be given its final form by a downward thrust against the upper edge of the pot, or by any suitable forming.

It will be realized that whereas I have described and shown a practical and operative device, nevertheless many changes may be made in the size, shape, number and disposition of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention. I therefore wish my drawing and description to be taken as in a broad sense illustrative or diagrammatic, ratherthan as a limitation to my precise showing.

In pot type liquid hydrocarbon burners it is highly important to provide anadequate supply of secondary air to a primary mixture in such a fashion that combustion noises are substantially cylindrical end wall portion and an intermediate wall portion connecting said cylindrical end wall portion with the side wall of the pot, each said wall portion having a plurality of secondary air inlet apertures, the axes of corresponding apertures of said two wall portions converging inside the pot.
.2. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a pot member having a circumferential side wall and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall having a plurality of primary air inlet apertures circumierentially spaced thereabout, said pot having an outwardoffset adjacent its open end, including a generally cylindrical end wall portion and an intermediate wall portion connecting said cylindrical end wall portion with the side wall of the pot, each said wall .portion havinga plurality of secondary air inlet apertures, the axes of corresponding apertures of said two wall portions converging and the axes of the apertures in the intermediate wall portion being outwardly inclined toward the apertures in the'end' portion.
3. In a burner'pot for pot typ burners, a pot member having a circumferential side wall and a closed end wall, the opposite end oi-the pot being'open, the side wall having a plurality of primary air inlet apertures circumferentially spaced thereabout, said pot having an outward ofiset adjacent its open end, including a generally cylindrical end wall portion and an intermediate wall portion connecting said cylindrical end wall portion with the side wall of the pot, each said wall portion having a plurality of secondary air inlet apertures, the axes of corresponding apertures of said two wall portionsconverging, the axes of the apertures in the intermediate wall portion being outwardly inclined toward the apertures in the end wall portion and 'the axes of the apertures in the end wall portion being inclined toward the open end of the pot.
4. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a pot member having a generally cylindrical circumferential side wall provided with a plurality of primary air inlet apertures, and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side, i
ly' from the wall of the pot and which provide an ample supply of secondary air at the point of admission. In practice in all the forms shown herein, thereis provided quiet and efficient combustion, with an ample supply of air at the base of the jet. The impingement of the two inclined currents of air holds down the. speed of flow of the jets and prevents any tendency for the jets to burn away from the inner faceof the pot. I
A primary cause of noisy combustion is the tendency of the base of the flame to leavethe immediate vicinity of the orifice through which the air enters. By providing impinging jets I control or limit the speed of the air jet flow, and at the same time insure an ample supply of secondary air at the base of the flame, adjacent theinner face of the pot wall.
I claim:
1.-In a burner pot for pot type burners,'a pot member having a circumferential side wall and a. closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall having a plurality of wall having an outwardly extending portion terminating in a generally cylindrical end portion, the side wall of the pot having secondary air inlet apertures in the outwardly extending portion and in the cylindrical end portion, formed and adapted to direct converging jets into the pot.
5. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a pot member having a generally cylindrical circumferential side wall provided with a plurality of primary air inlet apertures, and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the
sidewall having an outwardly'extending portion terminatingin a generallycylindrical portion at the open end of the pot, the side wall of the pot having secondary air inlet apertures in the outwardly extending portion and in the cylindrical end portion, the axes of the apertures in the said two portions intersecting inside the pot.
6. In a burner pot for pot type burners,'a pot member having a generally cylindrical circum ferential side wall provided with a plurality of primary air inlet apertures, and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall having an outwardly extending portion terminating in a generally cylindrical portion at the open end of the pot, the side wall of the pot having secondary air inlet apertures in the outwardly extending portion and in the cylindrical end portion, the axes of the apertures in the said two portions intersecting closely adj acent the inner face of said cylindrical end portion.
7. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a pot member having a generally cylindrical circumferential side wall provided with a plurality of primary air inlet apertures, and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall having an outwardly extending portion terminating in a generally cylindrical portion at the open end of the pot, the side wall of the pot havin secondary air inlet apertures in the outwardly extending portion and in the cylindrical end pore tion, said. outwardly extending portion being inclined outwardly and away from the open end of the pot.
8. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a pot member having a generally cylindrical circumferential side wall provided with a plurality of primary air inlet apertures, and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall having an outwardly extending portion terminating in a generally cylindrical portion at the open end of the pot, the side wall of the pot having secondary air inlet apertures in the outwardly extending portion and in the cylindrical end portion, said outwardly extending portion being inclined outwardly and away from the open end of the pot, the axes of the secondary air inlet apertures in said outwardly extending portion being generally perpendicular to said outwardly extending portion, and converging with the axes of the air inlets in the cylindrical end portion closely adjacent the inner face of said cylindrical end portion.
9. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a p t member having a circumferential generally cylindrical side wall and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall including two generally cylindrical portions of different diameter and a connecting wall portion therebetween, the cylindrical portion of maximum diameter being located adjacent the open end of the pot and having therein a plurality of circumferentially spaced secondary air inlet apertures, the cylindrical portion of smaller diameter having therein a plurality of primary air inlet apertures spaced circumferentially thereabout, and said connecting wall portion having therein additional secondary air inlet apertures adapted to deliver impinging Jets of air toward the jets delivered inwardly through said first mentioned secondary air inlet apertures.
10. In a burner pot for pot type burners, a pot I member having a circumferential generally cylindrical side wall and a closed end wall, the opposite end of they pot being open, the side wall including two generally cylindrical portions of difierent diameter and a connecting'wall portion 'therebetween, the cylindrical portion of maximum diameter being located adjacent the open end of the pot and having therein a plurality of circumferentiall'y spaced secondary air inlet apertures, the cylindrical portion of smaller diameter having therein & plurality of primary air' inlet apertures spaced circumierentially thereabout, and said connecting wall portion having therein additional secondary airinlet apertures adapted to deliver impinging jets of air outwardly toward the jets delivered inwardly through said first mentioned secondary air inlet apertures.
11. In a burner 'pot for pot type burners, a pot member having a circumferential generally cylindrical side wall and a closed end wall, the opposite end of the pot being open, the side wall including two generally cylindrical portions of different diameter and a connecting wall portion therebetween, the cylindrical portion of maximum diameter being located adjacent the open end of the pot and having therein a, plurality of ci-rcumferentially spaced secondary air inlet apertures, the cylindrical portion of smaller diameter having therein a, plurality of primary air inlet apertures spaced circumferentially thereabout, and said connecting wall portion having therein additional secondary air inlet apertures adapted to deliver impinging jets of air outwardly toward the jets delivered inwardly through said first mentioned secondary air inlet apertures, said connecting wall portion being upwardly and inwardly inclined toward the open end or the pot.
