PATENT OFFICE.
WATER-BAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part ot'` Letters Patent No. 241,396, dated May 10, 1881."
` Application inea Apri14, msi. (Model.)
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, MORRIS MATTsoN, ofN ew York, in the county of New York and State of NewYork, haveinvented certain newanduseful Improvements in VVater-Bags; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it per tains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawi n g, which forms part ot' this specification.
My invention relates to an improvementiu water-bags; and it consists .in attaching one or more handles, made of any sui table rigid material, to the edge or edges of the bag, near its i mouth, whereby the bag can be more conveniently held while being lled, as will be more t'nll y described hereinafter.
The object of myiuvention is to dispense with the usual exible straps which are attached to the bags for convenience in carrying them, but which cannot be used conveniently or safely when the bag is being tilled with hot water; and also to provide the bag with rigid handles near its mouth, whereby the bag can be filled as easily and with as much safety with hot water as any other small-necked vessel.
The accom pan ying drawingrepresents a side elevation ot' my invention, partly in section.
A represents an ordinary water-bag, such as is in common use, and which is provided with the funnel B at its upper end as a means of lill- .ing the bag with water. In the neck of the bag is secured the short tube C, which has a screwthread cut on its end to receive a cap, l),
. whereby the bag is securely sealed after it is filled. I prefer that the cap D shall be made of hard rubber, as it does not become heated unduly when the bag is filled with hot water, and therefore can be handled in tightening` the screw without burning the fingers.
Heretofore these water-bags havebeen provided with 4flexible straps for handles, which answer well enough to merely carry the bags or to hang them up, but which are of little or no service in holding the bags while they are being filled. rIhe trouble with these bags has always been that persons in lling them with hot water are liable to have. their hands scalded by the hot water or steam, or both together,
because the bags have never been provided f with suitable handles by which the bag could be held lirmly and steadily while being filled. As long as the bag is llexible there is no means of holding its upper extremity with any safety, and `hence a person is always liable to scald him orvher self whenever the bag has to be lled with hot water.
In order to do away with this great inconvenienceI entirelydispense with the usual ilexible strap, and attach to one or both ot' the edges ofthe bag, just belowitsneck, thehandleorhandles I, which are made ot' any rigid material. These handles may be formed ot' the shape here shown, or any other that may be preferred, so that they are readily grasped, and serve to hohl the bag with safety while being filled or carried around afterward. As here shown, the handles` are made ot' stiit' wire, and are covered with rubber and attached to the bag during its mauuf'aeture, so that when the bag is vulcanized the handles become a rigid part thereof.. Hard rubber or any analogous material having the requisite aiiiount ot' strength and rigidity may be used instead ot' the wire. l
Should it be desired to make the handles en- -tirely out ot' metal, the bag will be provided with a metallic n'eck and the handles be formed with or secured to the neck in any suitable manner. l
I do not limit myself to any special manner ot' making or attaching the handles, as they may be varied in a number ot' ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claimi A flexible water-bag "provided with one or more rigid handles, whereby the bag can be safely held while being tilled or used for other purposes, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereot1 I affix my signature iu y presence of two witnesses.
MORRIS MATTSQN. Witnesses: I
J. FRED Dorn, L. M. DoscHER.
