According to the present invention, the adjacent marginal portions 2| of therespective sheets are connected together by a special joint running the width of the roof as will be described in its various modifications.
Referring to Figure 3, this joint includes a clip B made of ungalvanized .metaland having a dome 95 adapted to receive upturned ends 2| of the roof sheets, which are juxtaposed as indicated. A weld 91 joins the ends 2| of the sheets and the member 85 together. Seam welds 92 also join the upper and lower reinforcing members to Y each other and to the marginal portions of the portions and 3| overlying and underlying theedge of the sheet respectively, and a sloping portion 32 disposed towards the adjacent clip. The joint is completed by a fillet weld 35 which is laid in' the V formed between the two clips. Arseam weld'fV extends through the portions 30 and 3| and the marginal portion 2| of each sheet. Thus each clip runs the entire width of the sheet and is' securely 'fastened to theV marginal portions thereof. Theclips are securely fastened toone another,'completingthe joint;

Advantages Various advantages of the invention will become evidenty from a study of the above description. Principal among these are the provision of strong, attractive joints which can be formed by welding without disintegration of the galvanizing ofthe roof sheets at unprotected points.
It `will be understood that, without departing from the' spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims, various modifications may be made in the specific expedients described. The latter are illustrative only and not offered in a restricting sense, it being desired that only'such limitations shall be placed thereon as may be required by the state of the prior art.

In a structure of the type in which marginal portions of adjacentrmetal sheets are connected by a joint, the joint including shrouding means overlying said marginal portions and shrouding means underlying said marginal portions, said shrouding means masking the edges of the sheets, and a seam weld between each sheet and the overlying and underlying shrouding means remote from said edges and remote from the outer sides of said shrouding means.
13. A structure as dened in claim 12 wherein the metal sheets are galvanized and whereby the Y welded portions of the galvanized sheets are protected by said shrouding means.
14. In a structure in which the margins of metallic sheets are joined together; a joint including an upper part overlying the margins of adjacent sheets and a lower part underlying the margins of adjacent sheets, and seam welds remote from the outer sides ofY said parts joining together the margin of each sheet, respectively, to said overlying and underlying parts, whereby the edges of the metallic sheets and the welded portion of each sheet is protected.

In a structure in which the margins of galvanized metallic sheets are joined together; a jo-int including an upper part overlying the margins of adjacent sheets and a lower part underlying the margins of adjacent sheets, and seam welds remote from the outer sides of said parts joining together the margin of each sheet, respectively, to said overlying and underlying parts, whereby the edges of the metallic sheets and the galvanization around the welded portion of each sheet is protected.

In a structure of the type in which marginal portions of adjacent metal sheets are joined together, a joint, as described in claim 19, wherein the abutting faces of each clip are vertical and the diagonal face of the clip is formed by a domed portion of the overlying part.

In a structure of the type in which marginal portions of adjacent metal sheets are joined together, a joint, as claimed in claim 19, wherein the abutting portions of each clip are formed by relatively elongated vertical sections. extending upwards from the overlying part, and the diagonally sloping edge is formed on the top of the vertical section.

In a structure in which the marginal portions of adjacent galvanized metallic sheets are secured together, a joint comprising a common member overlying said marginal portions, a common member underlying said marginal portions, and a common seam weld joining together the overlying and underlyingportions and each member and its respective sheet marginal portion, wherebyY the welded portions of the galvanized sheets are protected by said members.

In a structure in which the marginal portions of adjacent metallic sheets are joined together, a joint including a clip having a part overlying and a part underlying the marginal portion of each sheet and a portion abutting that of a clip of the adjacent sheet, said abutting portions formed to provide a common groove for the reception of welded material to join said clips together, and a common weld joining together the overlying and underlying parts of each clip and its respective marginal portion.

In a structure in which the marginal po-rtions of adjacent galvanized metallic sheets are joined together, a joint including a clip having a part overlying and a part underlying the marginal portion of each sheet and a portion abutting that of a clip of the adjacentsheet, said abutting portions formed to provide a. common groove for the reception of welded material to join'said clips together, and a common weld joining together the overlying and underlying parts of each clip and its respective marginal portion, whereby the Welded portions of the galvanized sheets are protected by said clips.
25. A structure as dei-ined in claim 1 wherein a running board saddle is secured to said clips by said llet weld.
26. A roof for a railwayvcar comprising a plurality of metallic sheets adapted to extend between the side walls of a car when applied thereto, some of said sheets formed with a bulge taking the major portion of the Width of the sheets 4whose cross section is a shallow arc increasing in height and curvature from adjacent the ends of the sheet to the center of the sheet, the opposite sides of said bulge merging into the opposite side marginal portions of the sheet upon arcs oppositely disposed to the arcs of the bulge, and means to secure the marginal portions of adjacent sheets together, said means comprising a clip having a part overlying and a part underlying the marginal portion Yo1 each sheet and a ycommon Weld joining together the overlying and underlying parts of each clip to its respective sheet marginal portion, each of said clips provided with 8 an abutting portion engaging the abutting por--a tion of the adjacent clip, said clips formed to provide a, common groove, and a llet weld in said groove securing the clips together.
27. A roof for a railway car comprising a plurality of metallic sheets adapted to extend between the side walls of a car when applied thereto, some of said sheets formed with a bulge taking the major portion ofthe width of the sheets whose cross section is a shallow arc increasing in height and curvature from adjacent the ends of the sheet to the center of the sheet, the opposite sides of said bulge merging into the opposite side marginal portions of the sheet upon arcs oppositely disposed to the arcs of the bulge, the marginal portions of adjacent sheets being in substantially the same plane, and means to secure the marginal portions of adjacent sheets together, said means comprising a clip having a part overlying and a part underlying the marginal portion of each sheet and a common weld joining together the overlying and underlying parts of each clip to its respective sheet marginal portion, each of said clips provided with an abutting portion engaging the abutting portion of the adjacent clip substantially in the plane of the adjacent sheet marginal portions, said clips formed to provide a common groove, and a fillet weld in said groove securing the clips together,
