B. GORWIN; Shot Case,
No. 241,307. Patented May 10,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN OORWIN, OF PLEASANTVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHOT-OAS E.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 241,307, dated May 10, 1881.
Application filed March 26, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN OoEwIN, of Pleasantville, in the county of Venango and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shot-Gases; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved shot-case. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the shot-measurer.
My invention relates to shot-cases for holding shot; and it consists in a case in which the different sizes of shot are divided into separate bins or receptacles which discharge into adjustable measurers, by means of which a certain amount of shot may be drawn from the case.
In the drawings, a represents the body of the case, which may be of any suitable size. A convenient size, however, is about two feet in length, nine inches in depth or width, and sixteen inches high. The top of this case is divided into any desired number of bins or compartments b, the partitions extending across the case. These bins have preferably a sloping bottom, 0, at the lowest point of which are openings cl. Directly under each of these openings d is a cylinder, 0, fastened in suitable bearings and fitting against the openings (1. Each of the cylinders e is provided with a handle, j, which extends outside of the case. The body of these cylinders a may be of tin, which is fastened to disks 9 h, of wood or other suitable material, which form the ends of the cylinders. Inside of the cylinders c is another or third disk, 70, which is adjustable inside of the cylinder by means of the screw 1, which passes from outside of the cylinder through the disk g, and is attached to the disks k.
In the sides of the cylinders e are two openin gs-m, which may be round, as shown in the drawings, and n,which is of a pear or diamond shape the object of this form being to prevent more than one shot from being caught between the edge of the opening a and the bottom of the opening (I.
Extending under the row of cylinders c is an inclined bottom, 0, which has an opening, 9, at the bottom of the incline, so as to discharge the shot into a drawer, q, which is fitted into the lower part of the case.
(No model.)
In the front side of each of the bins I) is an opening, 1", covered with glass, so as to show the different-sized shot.
The operation of my improved shot-case is as follows: The different-sized shot is put in the bins I), the cylinders 0 being turned so that the openings d are closed by the sides of the cylinders. The disk k is adjusted so that each cylinder will contain a pound, or other amount, by weight, of shot, and as a certain bulk of small shot weighs more than the same bulk of large shot, the disks 7; in the cylinder will have to be adjusted so as to vary the capacity of the different cylinders accordingly. By turning one of the handles f a quarter-way round the opening a in the cylinder 0 is brought under the opening (I, the shot falls from the bin and fills the cylinder. The cylinder is then turned to its original position, and the shot therein contained falls through the opening on onto the inclined bottom 0, and thence through the openingp into the drawer q.
The advantages of my invention are that the different-sized shot are arranged in a convenient case, and a certain amount, by weightmeasure, may be easily drawn therefrom. I have spoken of the cylinders or measurers 0 being adjusted so as to contain a pound of shot; but they may be adjusted to measure any fraction of a pound, or more than a pound by increasing their size. The hole or opening on in the cylinder 0 may be dispensed with, the shot being discharged from the openinga, in which case it would be necessary to give the cylinders a half instead of a quarter revolution.
Having thus described my intention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. In combination with a case for holding shot, an adjustable measurer, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In a shot-case for retailing shot, the combination of the bins 1), adjustable measurer e, inclined bottom 0, and drawer q, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 100 my hand the 22d day of March, A. D. 1881.
BENJAMIN OORWIN.
Witnesses I A. G. BANKS, J O. GoUL.
