Description
CII
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
O. R. HURLBUT, OF YORKSHIRE, YORK.
CLOTHES-DRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 24,123, dated May 24, 1859.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHAUNGY R. I-IURL- BUT, of Yorkshire, in the county of Cattaraugus vand State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Machine for Drying Clothes, called Clothes- Bars or Clothes-Driers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which the figure is a perspective view.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
It is composed of l standards C, held together by a cross bar D, the standards on one side to be rst mortised on to the cross bar D, with loose joints so as to admit of being opened and shut, the standards on the other side to be firmly aixed to the ends of the cross bar D. Attached to the top of the standards is 2 racks composed of 4 side rails E, with l cross rails F in each rack, the upper cross rail serving for both racks and the second cross rail from the top in each rack passing through the upper end of the standards C, with the side rails of one of the racks on the inside of the standards and the other on the outside of them, the side rails and standards coming inside to be made with loose joints so as to play freely; the lower rail of each rack is passed through 2 smaller side rails G, with loose joints with a cross rail H, at the lower end of them; there is also a cross rail I, connecting the standard C, between the cross bar D, and the foot of the standard. This cross rail I, is inserted' with a loose joint through the ends of the sash B. On the under side of this sash is the buttons K, which being dropped over the cross rail I, in the other standards; or over the bottom rail, or third rail from the top in the rack will hold the bars in any desired. position, for in proportion as the foot of the standards is drawn together or spread apart will the upper side of the racks present a horizontal or nearly perpendicular surface.
Having thus fully described my inven` tion, I claim the within described article of manufacture constructed as described to wit:
The arrangement of standards (C, 0,) side rails (E, E,) and (G, G,) cross rails F, F, D, and I, I, and sash B, B, provided on their under side with buttons (K, K,) the whole, being jointed, and the several parts acting conjointly substantially in the manner and for the purpose specified.
C. R. I-IURLBUT.
, Witnesses:
