I CONVERTIBLE APPLIANCE STAND AND SERVICE TABLE Filed Aug. 21, 1944 A -v INVENTOR.
F1 G. 2. I WILLIAM. I. Ewms BY A ATTORNEY aligned relation to Patented Oct. 15, 1946 CONVERTIBLE APPLIANCE STAND ANS SERVICE TABLE William I. Evans; Los Angeles, Calif Application Augustzl, 1944, Serial o. 550,363 7 My inventionrelates to an appliance stand in shelf form and readily convertible into a service table or back into a service stand, as desired, and the objects of my invention are:
First, to provide a service stand with several open shelves which may be readily converted into 1 a service table with flat top; 1
Second, to provide an apparatus of thisclass in which the shelves or tables are secured in their relation to each other when in either position for 1 the appliance stand or service table; Third, to provide an apparatus of this class wherein the table members are held in their each other and reinforced when in service table form; 1
Fourth, to provide an apparatus of this class I:
which is readily convertible for either an appliance stand or a service table;
Fifth, to provide an apparatus of this class with novel latch means securing the apparatus in con vertible position; a 1
Sixth,- to provide an apparatus of this class whereby objects on different members of the service table may remain there and be shifted so that they occupy substantially the same. position on the appliance stand after it is converted from f table to stand, or from stand to table; and
Seventh, to provide an apparatus of this class which is very simple andeconomical of construction, easy to operate and convert, eflicient in its 4 Claims. (01. 211-2) Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing. 1
The side frame members i and 2, crossframe member 3, table and shelf members 4, 5 and 6, table and shelf connecting members i and8, table and shelf shift control bar 9, shiftable latch member l0, shiftable latch control rod II, and stationary latch member I2 constitute the principal parts and portions of my convertible appliance stand and service table.
The side members I and 2 are flat vertical plate like members of the proper heighth and preferably rounded at their upper corners at Ia and 2d. Secured to the inner sides at the upper edge of each of these plates l and 2 is an L-shaped cross section member lbwhich is secured to the plates with one of the members extending toward said plates leaving a space to, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawing, The outwardly extending ledge portion secured to these plates I and 2 is cut away at the one end to receive the table and shelf connecting members 1 and 8 when they are in action and which will not readily deteriorate or tain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my convertible appliance stand and service table in the appliance stand form; Fig. 2 is a similar View of the same in the service table form; Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view of the shiftable control bar and latch mechanism in relation therewith for securing the shelves and table in the position as shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is an enlarged bottom view of one of the shelves with the control bar and bracket in connection therewith and Fig. 5 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevational view of the shiftable control bar and latch mechanism in position for holding the table and shelves in the position shown in Fig. 2.
I vertical position, as shown in Fig.1 of the drawing. Secured on the upper edges of the L-shaped member lb and flush with the outer side leaving the groove to is the table or shelf member 5 which is the intermediate table or shelf member and is r not shiftable.
The members I and 8 are pivotally mounted intermediate their ends in the slots I between the plates I at one side and the member lb and table member at the other side and between the side member 2 and table member 5 at the opposite side, all as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The opposite ends 711 and 8a are pivotally connected to the table or shelf members and 5 at their opposite ends 10 and 80. Thus the table or shelf members 4 and 6 are pivotally connected and supported relatively to the table member 5 by means of these connecting members I and 8 and are shiftable thereby to the two positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 by manual operation by grasping the hand loop member to on the edge of the member 4, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
Mounted on the lower side of one edge of each of the members 4, 5 and 6 is a bracket member 4?), shown best in Fig. 4 of the drawing, and supported by screws 40, which is provided with bifurcated extended portions between which the table and shelf shift control bar 9 is pivotally mounted by means of pins 9a.
Pivotally mounted on this control bar 9 near its normally lower end is a latch member in which is arranged to engage a stationary latch member l2 at its upper edge at one end and a notch 5d at its other end. This latch member 52 is secured on a cross frame member 3 connecting the side members I and 2 together near their lower sides at one edge, as shown best in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawing.
Connected to the outer sides of the latch mem ber I is latch member control rod II which is provided with a fixed washer Ha thereon and said rod extends through a bearing member 8?: on the member 9 spaced from the latch member it some distance, and between the Washer Ma and said bearing member Eb is the compression spring lib which tends to hold the rod downwardly and the end of the latch Iii connected with the rod 1 I in engaged relation with the latch member I2. This rod ll extends to near the opposite end of the control bar 9 and adjacent to the hand member do, as shown best in Fig. 1 of the drawing. This rod 9' is supported on the bar 9 at the hand near the end member ia by means of a loop 90. Thus the end of the rod l! isadjacent the hand member 4 so that the rod 5 i may be drawn to release the latch member Hi from the member I2. At the sametime the shelf member 4 may be drawn forwardly and the member 6 shifted backwardly until they reach. the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing and they are secured in such relation by means of the portion iiic of the latch member ID engaging the side of a hole 5a in the plate 51) mounted over a recess 50 in the table member 5 as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions, I do not Wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pawnt is:
