To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, DAVID M. REYNOLDS, of Oxford, in the county of Chester and State of Pennsylvania,'have invented an Improvement in SpringChimney-Holders for Lamps,
of which the following is a specification.
Lamps have been made with a circular range of vertical springs for receiving and holding the chimney. These springs, being of metal, are not reliable for holding the chimney, because the metal does not cling to the glass, and the chimney is liable to work or crawl upwardly between the chimney-springs when exposed to the jarring or shaking motion incii5 dent to transportation from place to place by hand.
Lamps have been made with rubber upon the catch or at the end of the screw, for holding the flanged chimney and preventing injury by undue pressure.
Myinvention relates to the combination, with the metal chimney-holding springs, of elastic material, such as india rubber, leather, or iibrous material, that intervenes between the 2 5 metal and the glass, and yields to the glass, and is compressed sufficiently to produce the proper amount of adhesion between the elastic material and the glass to hold the chimney in its place upon the burner, and to prevent c the chimney moving upwardly when the lamp is agitated.

The base a, air-distributing plate b, wicktube 0, and cone or deflector d are to be of any usual character.
The glass chimney 0 is supported upon the rest that in this instance is the outer edge of the air-distributer, and around this there age the chimney-springs f, made of metal, of the I proper size'and shape, and fastened at their lower ends below the chimney-rest. t i are the chimney-holders, of rubber or similar material,that intervene between the metal springs and the glass. I prefer to use bands of such rubber, and to cut into the metal of the chimney-spring openings at 0 0 for the band to pass through; but where the band is endless I employ tongues 11. n, that are turned aside to allow the band to be slipped over them, and then they are bent back to place in line with the rest of the metal of the spring, thereby holding the band in place.
It is to be understood that the glass of the chimney, coming into contact with the rubber chimneyholders, compresses them slightly, and that they cling to the glass, so as to keep the chimney in its place and prevent it work. ing oft, but allow of its easy removal or reinsertion between the spring chimney-holders.
I am aware that leather has been introduced between the edges of a dome-supporting disk and the interior of the chimney. In this case M such leather is exposed to the heat thatis conducted from the metal dome. By my improvement the rubber or similar material applied to the chimney-springs that extend upwardly from the lower part of the burner is not injured by the heat, because the springs do not become heated.
I claim as my invention.
l. The combination, with the metal chimneyholding springs extending upwardly from the body of the burner, of india-rubber or equivalent elastic material connected to the metal springs, and intervening between such springs and the glass of the.chimney, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The metal chimney-holding springs provided with openings 0 and tongues 01, in combination withthe bands ofrubber or similar material passing around the tongues and through the openings, substantially as set forth.
