' UNITED STATES Parnrrr OFFICE.
HENRY MULLEN, OF WESTFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
WHIP-LASH COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 240,750, dated April 26, 1881.
Application filed January 24, 1881. (No model.)
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Bc it known that I, HENRY MULLEN, of Westtield,in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvementin Whip-Lash Gonplin gs and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication, in which-- Figure l represents Yan elevation, showing portions ot' a Whip stock, loop, and lash and the coupling as applied; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the coupling and connected parts; Fig. 3, a longitudinal section of the ferrule; Fig. 4, an elevationtop-plan view of the plug' or keeper; Fig. 5, the key or wrench for securing or detaching the keeper; Fig. 6, an elevation of the plug or keeper with the lash connected, and Fig. 7 a View showing the method commonly practiced in securing the lash-loop to the stock.
Similar letters of reference indica-te corresponding parts in the several figures.
The method commonly practiced in securing the lash-loop to the stock (shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings) consists in a cord wrapping, which soon becomes worn and disengaged.
The object of my invention is to secure a lash or a loop to which the lash is attached to the stock, so that the parts constituting the coupling maybe quickly pnt together or detached, and a firm connection made that will be strong and durable Iand present an attractive appearance.
In order that others may understand and apply my invention I will -tirst proceed to describe the construction, arrangement, and operation of its several parts, and subsequently to point out in the claims its novel characteristics.
In the drawings, a represents the tip portion of a Whip-stock, to which theinternally-threaded metallic ferrule bis xed, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
c is a plug or keeper, provided, with a corresponding external serewfthread for engagement with the internal thread of theferrule, and constructed with its central portion reduced in diameter, the reduced surface heilig roughened or serrated, as shown in Fig. 4. This plug or keeper c is also provided with a head or projecting end, having transverse notches or slots (shown in plan, Fig. 4) to receive a key or Wrench, d, Fig. 5, by means of which the plug is turned within the ferrule.
The lash-loop e (which may be a part of the lash f, as shown in Fig. 6, or a separate piece, as shown in Fig. 2) is secured to the plug or keeper c by a cord or other equivalent means, to compress the loop tightly to the reduced portion, the roughened or serra-ted surface assisting to prevent a separation of the parts. The loop e is first attached tothe plugor keeper c, as' shown in Fig. 6, and when placed within the ferrule is compressed tight-ly between the metallic surfaces and securely fastened.
Letters Patent No. 221,226, dated November 4, 1879, refer to a device consisting of a split ferrule havin g an external screw-thread, and a tapering nut having a corresponding internal thread, adapted lo the purpose of my invention; but the construction and relative arrangement of the parts of such device diii'er therefrom.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A whip-lash coupling consisting of a ferrule, b, iixed to the end of a stock, a, andaremovable plug or keeper, c, the loop e heilig interposed and retained between the respect ive parts, substantially as described.
2. The ferrule b, provided with an internal screw-thread, and the plug or keeper c, having a corresponding external thread, and a head adapted to receive a wrench or othersuitable device for securin g the plug or keeper in place, as set forth.
HENRY MULLEN.
