UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BERNEY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE GLOBE COMPANY, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT.
SPARK ARRESTER AND CONSUMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 240,500, dated April 26, 1881.
' Application filed March 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED BERNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Consuiners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompa= nying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to mechanism by which sparks are returned to the fire-box or other receptacles.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a locomotive-boiler 2 5 with my improvements attached. Fig. 2 is a portion of an inside smoke-stack, with vertical section of my improved cone, showing a plan of securing it in position. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the same, partly in section. Fig. 4 is 0 a view of a quarter-section of cone and collar. Fig. 5 is a vertical section of a deflecting and heating hood attached to a portion of a flueblast. Fig. 6 is a front View of a deflecting and heating hood.
In drawings, Fig. 1, A represents a locomotive-boiler, having the usual furnace, B, tubes C, smoke-stack D, draft-pipe E, and exhaustpipe F, connecting'pipe Gr, return-fines H, 'deflector and heater 'I, steam-pipe K, saddle L,
40 stack M, inner barrel, N, deflecting stackfiange 0, inside pipe-flange, P, and cone Q.
The annular flange O is riveted or otherwise secured to the interior of the stack, close to the pendent tubes q of the cone, to assist in de- 5 flectin g the sparks, &c., into the annular space between the inner and outer barrels of the stack.
In drawings, Figs. 2, 3, and 4, A represents the cone, which is cast preferably in five partsthe top and quarter sections, as shown in Fig.
4. These are bolted together, as shown at a,
by flanges and bolts. The heating-deflector I is cast in the shape shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The holes can be used to allow the steam and air-to pass through or with a perforated plate, R. They can be filled up with a non-conducting material placed in the cavity S, which can be also used to heat air, or filled with asbestus or some similar material, to prevent the burning out of the deflector. The deflector is provided with prongs F, which are intended to keep pieces of wood from closing or choking the passage, as in this way it would bealmost impossible,'when using wood as fuel, to close them up. The cavity is so formed as to hold the air and steam to heat it before being deflected into the fire.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a spark-arrester, a cone, Q, consisting of radial vertically-cut sections provided with tubes q, arranged substantially as shown and described.
2. In a spark-arrester, the cone Q, construct- 7 5 ed as described, in combination with the an. nular space of the chimney, the saddle-plate L, connecting-pipe Gr, return-fines H, and a steam-jet, all arranged for operation substantially as specified. 8o
3. In spark-arrester, the combination of return-flues H with a deflector, I, having perforations, and a perforated plate, R, and prongs T, substantially as and for the purpose specifled.
4. In a spark-arrester, the cone Q, made in vertical sections bolted together, in combination with the annular flange O, secured to the stack for the purpose of deflecting the sparks, substantially as described.
5. The spark arrester and consumer herein described, consisting of the stack M, cone Q, deflecting-flange O, saddle L, connecting-pipe Gr, steam-jet K, return-fines H, and hood I, all constructed and arranged as shown, and for 5 the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED BERNEY.
Witnesses S. N. BERNEY, S. H. WALKER.
