1 Claim. 1
This invention appertains tonew and useful improvements in draft devices and more particularly to a tongue which can be used either for wagon trailers or farm implements. The principal object of the present invention is to provide a tongue structure made up of telescopic sections so that it can be used in various capacities in drawing vehicles or farm implements.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent to the reader of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the tongue.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view showing the tongue in contracted position.
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through a portion of the tongue.
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspective view.
Figure 5 is a cross-sectional View.
Figure 6 is a top plan view fragmentarily showing the tongue connected to an auto steer-type front axle.
Referring to the drawings wherein like numerals designate like parts, it can be seen that numeral 5 denotes a channeled member which is welded or otherwise secured to the usual front axle bar 6 of a wagon or trailer. This axle bar 6 should be steerable.
A pair of arms I, I are bolted as at 8 to the channeled member 5 and converge at their outer ends as at 9 where they are bridged by a plate I!) on which is an apertured lug II which can be used when a double-tree I2 (see Figure 1) is to be employed, that is, when the tongue is to be used with horses.
The arm portions 9 overlap and are welded or otherwise secured to the inner end of a hollow tube I3. This tongue structure has a slide section I 4 which is slidable in the section I3 and at its inner end has a recess for receiving a pintle I5a on a spring I5, this spring being secured to the outer end portion of the section I3 with the pintle I5a operating through an opening in this end of the section I3.
At the outer end of the tongue section M are upper and lower projecting members I5, I1 apertured as at It to permit disposition of a pin therethrough when attaching this end of the tongue to a tractor or any other structure. The member I! has a neck yoke ring hook to be used when horses are used. I
Figure 6 discloses an auto steer-type front axle, the axle being denoted by numeral 20 and having wheels 2i at the ends thereof adapted to be steered by arms 22 connected by link rods 23 to opposite sides of a yoke 24 which is connected by a kingpin 25 to the axle 2E]. The attaching end of the tongue of the present invention is secured to the yoke 24 by a bolt or the like 25, the present invention in Figure 6 being generally referred to by numeral 26.
If desired, the sections I3, l4 may be square or rectangular in cross-section as shown in Figure 5 and denoted by the reference characters I3a and invention, what is said first section and adapted to engage in both comprising extending arms bridged by a plate and an apertured lug on said plate.
