SHOE CONSTRUCTION Filed May 18, 1944 n f l j? Z0 ZL ,Z5 ,Z5 J0 J3 f INVENTOR C75/wv M/sw/s.
BY iff/W Patented Mar. 19, 1946 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE SHOE CONSTRUCTION Application May 18,
2 Claims.
My invention relates generally to footwear` and more particularly to shoes of the type disclosed in U. S. Letters Patent issued to me July '7, 1942, No. 2,289,180, and No. 2,348,713 issued May 16, 1944.
The principal objects of my present invention are, to generally improve upon and simplify the construction of the footwear disclosed in my above mentioned patents as well as other existing forms of similar shoes and to provide'a new and novel arrangement and combination of a one-piece outsoleI midsole and a flexible member, which in addition to providing a connection between the upper and said one-piece outsole, midsole and heel lirt, serves as a cover of neat and finished appearance for the midsole and heel lift.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. l is a side elevational view of shoe constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view cf the one-piece outsole, midsole and heel lift.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged cross section taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a cross section taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates apreferred embodiment of my invention. III designates an outsole having a flat underface, II the midsole integrally connected to the top of said outsole and I2 a substantially wedge-shaped heel lift, which is integrally connected to the rear upper face of the midsole.
These three parts viz. the outsole, midsole and heel lift are formed in a single piece by molding or otherwise, from sponge rubber or composition having rubber as its principal ingredient and the marginal portions of the outsole and midsole are separated by a continuous narrow slot or groove I3, which occupies a plane parallel with the under face of said outsole.
The side faces of the midsole and heel lift are slightly inset with respect to the outer edge of the outsole so that when the covering member is applied to said midsole and heel lift, the outer face of said cover will be flush with the outer edge of said outsole.
.The lower edge of the shoe upper I4 of flexible 1944, Serial No. 536,179
material such as leather` or fabric, shaped and decorated as desired, is secured, preferably by a row of stitching I5, to the edge of a sock lining I8, preferably of fabric which lies directly upon s the upper faces of the midsole and hee1 lift.
Y The underturned upper edge of a covering member II, of flexible material such as fabric or leather is connected, preierably by a row or stitcling I8, to the connected edges of the upper i4 and sock lining l5 and said member is fitted snugly against the outer faces of the midsole and heel lift, to form a smooth nishing cover therefore. The lower edge of cover Il is secured within slot I3 by means or' a suitable adhesive, with the outer faces of the cover and outsole lying flush with each other.
Thus it will be seen that I have provided a shoe which is simple in construction, inexpensive of manufacture, of neat and pleasing appearance and highly comfortable to the wearers foot due to the flexibility and elasticity or the component structural parts.
It will be understood that minor changes in the size, form and construction of the various parts g5 of my improved footwear may be made and substituted for those herein shown and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, the scope of which is set forth in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In shoe construction, the combination with a one piece member comprising an outsole, a midsole and a heel wedge on the rear portion of said midsole, with a continuous channel formed between the edges of said outsole and midsole, ci' a sock lining overlying the upper faces of said midsole and heel wedge, an upper-having its lower edge overlying and secured to the edge o said sock lining and a cover overlying the side faces of said midsole and heel wedge, with the upper edge of said cover folded double to provide a bead which overlies the edge of' said upper with the underlying layer of said bead secured to and covering the underlying edges of said upper and sock lining and the lower edge of which cover is secured in said channel.
2. In shoe construction, the combination as set forth in claim 1 and the side faces of' said midsole and heel wedge being inset with respect to the side face of said outsole so that the outer face of said cover lies flush with the side face of said outsole.
