Description

Y A ing through them and the said support. One
j UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
JONATHAN S. PITOHER, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND WILLIAM L. WILLIAMS, OF SAME PLAOE.
RElN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,542, dated March 29, 1881.
Application filed February .2, 1881. (Model) I To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, JONATHAN S. PITOHER, of San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rein-Holders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Figure 1 is afront elevation of myimprovement, partly in section. Fig.2 is a plan View of the improvement.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a device whereby the driving-reins will be securely held and can becasily and quickly inserted and detach ed.
The invention consists in combining with a clamp, to be attached to the dash-board or other part of a vehicle, posts-having oneor more cams hinged to them, the said cams being held forward by springs pressing against pins attached to the cams and prevented from being forced too far forward by stops attached to the said clamp, as will be hereinafter fully described.
A isa plate, upon the side edges ofwhich are formed plates or flanges B, to serve as a clamp to receive the dash-board of a vehicle or other support. The plates B are drawn together against their support by a bolt, 0, passof theplates B may in some cases be omitted,
. when the holders are to be attached to some support other than the dash-board of a vehicle.
To the plate A, upon the opposite sides of its center, are attached two posts, D, which may be strengthened in place by braces E. The braces B may be made in one piece with the posts D, and may be curved or coiled, or otherwise made ornamental.
To the posts D are hinged cams F, which are kept from swinging farther forward than into line with each other by pins G or other stops attachedto the plate A.
To the lower edges of the cams F are at- 5 tached, or upon them are formed, pins or pro jections H, which pass through curved slots in the plate A and project at the lower side of the said plate.
To the lower side of the plate A are attached 5o springs I, the free endsof which press against the sides of the projecting ends of the pins or studs H, to press the cams F forward to clamp the reins J between their adjacent edges.
With this construction the reins J are inserted in the holder by drawing them to the rearward between the cams F, by which the reins will be securely held, and any attempt to draw them out forward will only cause the cams F to clamp the said reins more firmly.
If desired, one of the cams'F may be omitted, and the reins J clamped against a stationary post by the other cam F.
With this construction the driver, when he has occasion to lay down the reins, can insert them in the holder in an instant, and can as quickly detach them by giving them a slight rearward and upward pull.
By-this construction the reins when out of the hands of the driver will always be in such a position that they can be instantly grasped, when required.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a rein-holder, the combination, with the clampAB O,of the posts D,the hinged cams F, provided with studs H, the springs I, and the stops Gr, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the reins will be securely held and can be quickly attached and detached, as set forth.
JONATHAN SPENCER PITCHER.
