DRAW- BAR FOR RAI LWAY-CARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,272, dated March 22, 1881.

Figure 1 is a plan ofthe bottom of sections of two coupled cars, showing their position in passing a curve of short radius. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of my improved draw-bar inverted. Fig. 3 is a vertical central longitudinal section through the front end of the draw-bar. Fig. 4 is a like section of the opposite end of the same.
ln the accompauyin g drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents the body-bolster of a car, and B the platforms, rounded at their adjoining ends, as shown in Fig.1 to allow the cars to pass around curves of short radius.
O isthe king-bolt or draw-pin with which each car is provided at each end thereof, and to which the coupling device hereinafter de` scribed is pivoted.
The draw-bar is constructed as follows:
D is a plate, the free end of which is perforated to engage with the king-bolt, while the opposite end is provided with a lip, a, which engages with a suitable slot in the plate E, which is secured to the front end of the plate D by means of the bolts and nuts b.
F are two yokes secured to the under side of the plate E, to inclose and hold in position the resistance-plates c, between which is placed Vthe coiled spring d.
G is the draw-bar proper, which is preferably made ofiron with a wooden filling, H. rI`he rear end of the draw-bar Aterminates in a rect-y angular loop, I, which has a longitudinal movement between the yokes F. sufficiently large to allow the coupling-bar K to freely enter, with but little play, and pass through until the end of such` bar impinges against the stop g, in which position it is secured by the coupling-pin 11 which passes through the head and bar for that purpose.
A sector-support, L, is suitably suspended below the platform, near its front end, and is rigidly secured thereto by proper bolts, and its office is to support the front end of the drawbar, and at the same time to allow of a radial movement of this end of the draw-bar to the right or left, as occasion may require, the kingholt being the aXis of such movement.
A spring, M, is secured to the under side of the draw-bar, and to the frontend ofthis spring is secured the shoe N, which travels, in the radial movement of the d raw-bar, upon the upper face of the sector.
The coupling-bar K is a rigid bar, litting into the head of the draw-bar, with very little play therein, and near each of its ends it is provided with a hole for the coupling-pin, and so arranged that when two cars are coupled together the ends of the heads of the draw-bar are broughtinto close and rigid juxtaposition, as shown in Fig. 1.
By this construction and operation all the advantages hereinbefore recited are obtained 5 and it will, perhaps, be needless to add that each end of the car is provided with the coupling described.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In combination with a car-platform having pendent therefrom a sector, a draw-bar provided with a spring and shoe, substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
2. The combination, with the perforated pla-te D, pivoted to the platform, and slotted plate E, secured to the front end of said plate and provided with the yokes F, of the drawbar G, terminating vin the rectangular loop I, bolt e, resistance-plates c, and coiled spring d, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth. y
3. The combination, with the pivoted perforated plate D and slotted plate E, secured thereto and provided with the yokes F, of the ICO draw-bar G, having the end loop, I, resistaneeplates c, bolt e, spring d, spring M, provided l with shoe N, and seetonplate L, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
4. The combination, with the perforated pivoted plate D and slotted plate E, secured thereto and provided with the yokes F, of the drawbar G, provided with the loop I and stop g, rigid coupling-bar K, resistance-plates c, and spring; cl, substantially as described, :md for the purpose set forth.
5. The Coupling-bar Gr, made of iron, with a. Wooden lling, H, stop g, loop I, and spring M, carrying on its free end the shoe N, substantially as described, and for the purpose set 15 forth.
