UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS GRITOHLOYV, OF STEELTON, PENNSYLVANIA.
.MACHINE FOR SAWING RAILROAD-RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,227, dated March 22, 1881, Application filed December 29,1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, THOS. ORITCHLOW, of Steelton, in the countyof Dauphin, and in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Cutting Railway-Rails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, reference beiug had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved machine for cutting metal; and it is specially designed to provide an efficient apparatus for cutting railroad bars, frogs, switches, and the like, to reduce them to desired lengths, which requires to be done by cold cutting. I ef feet the object sought by the apparatus and mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a top view of my apparatus; Fig. 2, a transverse vertical section, and Fig. 3 a side elevation, of the apparatus. Fig. 4 represents a detached perspective view of the seat for supporting the rails whilebeing out.
The letter A indicates a substantial bed, of any suitable material, preferably of metal and B B, two longitudinal parallel ways or shears securely fastened to or formed on said bed.
The letters 0 0 indicate two pillow-blocks adapted to slide between the ways or shears and move thereon. The said pillow-blocks are provided with transverse bearings for the shafts D D of two cutting-saws, E E, which are mounted on the ends of the shafts, respectively, at one side of the apparatus in any con- On the opposite ends of the said shafts are mounted the right and left worm-gears F F, with which intermesh the right and left worm-screws G G, mounted on a common longitudinal shaft, H, journaled in bearings I and K K in a standard, L, at one end of the bed, and in the standards M M, rising from the respective pillow-blocks. The said shaft H is provided with a longitudinal groove, N, in which the worm screws are feathered, the said screws being capable of a longitudinal movement on the shaft, as more fullyhereinafter specified. The end of the shaft projecting from the stationary bearing is provided with a driving-pulley, O, by means of which the machine may be put in motion by a suitable driving-belt.
The letter P indicates a right and left leading-screw, journaled in bearings R in the standards L and S, and extending longitudinally above the pillow-blocks. The said screw passes through right and left screw-threaded abutments T T on the pillow-blocks in such manner that the pillow-blocks will be moved longitudinally on the bed in opposite directions simultaneously when the screw is rotated, the screw being provided with a handwheel, U, for the purpose.
The letter A indicates a transverse support and guide for the rail to be out, which is of such shape as to fit between the flanges of the rail, permitting the web to rest against its up per edge, whereby the rail may be held to the standard action of the saws and be permitted to be adjusted transversely with convenience.
The letter B indicates a standard. The upper face is formed to receive the side of the rail in a manner similar to the support and guide above mentioned. This standard extends to one side, beyond the saws, so as to support the outer end of the rail.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood in connection with the above description, and is'as follows: The rail, being placed between the saws and properly adjusted, is cut by causing the saws to approach each other by turning the right and left screws in the proper direction, the driving-shaft being put in motion, so as to rotate the saws in opposite directions and cut at both sides of the rail simultaneously. It will be perceived that as the pillow-blocks are moved by the screw the worm-screws will travel longitudinally on their shaft, so as to permit of the longitudinal movement on the pillow-blocks. The bar is clamped to the support B bymeans of a clamp, 0, having a binding-screw, D.
In order to provide for cutting the bar or rail at an angle or on a bevel, the outer support may be swiveled to its seat, so as to present the rail or bar obliquely to the saws.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi In combination with the simultaneously-0p- 5 crating saws and. pillow-blocks and the operating mechanism, the rail-supports, substantially as and. for the purposes set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 13th day of December, 1880.
THOS. GRITOHLOW.
