UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES F. MGGARRY, OF CALDWELL, OHIO.
ROAD-GRADER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,182, dated March 22, 1881.
Application filed October 20, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, JAMES F. MoGARRY, of Caldwell, in the county of Noble and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Road-Graders, of which the following is a specification;
Figure I is a sectional side elevation of the improvement shown in position for work. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the improvement shown in position for carriage. Fig. Sis a plan view.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The objectof this invention is to furnish road-graders so constructed that they can be readily turned, can be used in narrow places, will throw no weight upon the horses necks, either when loaded or unloaded, and when dumped can be readily drawn back to the place of loading.
The invention consists in constructing a road-grader of a scraper, draw-rods, a crossbar, a draw-bar, and a wheel, for supporting the scraper when dumped and being drawn from place to place, and a chain for holding the scraper in an inclined position while being ject so far to the rearward that they can be conveniently grasped to control the scraper while being filled. The lower side of the forward part of the bottom A is beveled and to the said forward part is attached a steel plate, E, to act upon the soil and take the wear. The forward part of the upper edges of the sides B are rounded off, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, to serve as runners when drawing the grader from place to place, and are faced with iron to prevent wear.
F are the draw-rods, the rear ends of which are hinged to the outer sides of the forward ends of thesides B. The rods F extend for ward at a distance apart a little greater than the breadth of the scraper A B (l, are attached to the ends of the cross-bar G, and are bent inward and forward, and their forward ends are attached to the opposite sides of the forward end ofthe draw-bar H. The crossbar G is rigidly attached to the rear end of the drawbar H, and to the center of the said draw-bar is attached the upper end of the forked "or slotted standard I, to the lower end of which is pivoted a small wheel, J. The standard I is strengthened by braces K, the rear ends of which are attached to the ends of the cross-' bar G, and their forward ends are attached to the opposite sides of the lower end of the said standard I.
With this construction, when the grader is dumped the handles D rest upon the end parts of the cross-bar G, so that the said grader will rest upon the said cross-bar G and the rounded edges of its sides B, and can be easily drawn to the place of loading, or from one place to another.
If desired, the wheelstandard I can be swiveled to the draw-bar H, so that the said wheel will work as a caster-wheel.
L is a chain, the forward end of which is attached to a hook, M, or other support attached to the center of the cross-bar G. The rear end of the chain L is attached to the middle part of the back 0 by an eye-strap, N, or other fastening, so as to support the scraper in place when in a working position. The rear end of the chain L should be adjustably attached to the back (J, so that it can be conveniently lengthened and shortened to hold the scraper at a less or greater inclination, as the character of the work to be done may require.
The forward end of the draw-bar H is provided with a hammer-strap, O, and a pin or bolt, P, to receive the double-tree or singletree to which the horses or horse is attached.
With this construction the grader can be drawn by a single horse when it is to be used in places where it would be inconvenient or impossible for a team to work.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut- 1. In a road-grader, the combination, with the scraper A B O D E and the draw-rods F, of the crossbar G, the draw-bar H, and the Wheel I J, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the scraper will be supported While being drawn from place to place, as set forth.
and described, whereby thescraper will be held in an inclined position while being filled, 10
JAMES F. MQGARRY.
