This invention has to do with hydraulic presses, amore particular adaptation being as. an arbor press..
Q'ne of the major features of my invention is its provision ci novel. means for obtaining quick contact off the ram with the work.y This initial contact is, accomplishedeither mechanically or hydr"a'ulicja-lly,V by a simple, compact mechanism. Afterv contact is; made, my ram-actuating element is automatically converted from aA quick contact establishing mechanism to a vpressure multiplying mechanism which exerts the requisite pressure onthe ram to accomplish its Work.
` Another feature of my invention resides in the 'provision oa single manually operated' member for establishing quick contact of the ram withthe work and for thereafter exerting the hydraulic, working pressure, thus eliminating the multiplicity `of controls usually necessary for the ful-l operation of conventional arbor presses.
Another object of my invention is the provision VVoli a safety clutch incombination with pressure release means to prevent injury which might re- Sult from return movementI of the ram mechanismbeing transmitted' to the manual control member, as well as to render it possibleA to disengage the operatingrneans to maintain a xed hydraulic pressureyon the ram when desired.
An additional object of-'fthe invention isthe elimination of external pumps and valvessuch as are usually present in Such devices, by-providA 'ing a `sellconijiained hydraulic ram carriage.

A pumping piston 2-9 is reciprocally mounted in the cylinder 26 and is secured Aat itsftop end to a rack 30 by screw means 3l.

In the lower end of the bodyV there a counter bore 50 in the housing 36 Within which a plug 5I fis threadedly secured. The iny ner end of the plug has opening `53 providing a ySeat .for a ball valve 55 controlling passageY of fluid between cylinder 26 and cylinder 21 and normally preventing escape of uid from cylinder 21, there being a body passageway 21a providing communication between cylinder 21 and a transverse opening through plug 5| communicating with the hollow interior of the plug. A spring 56 normally urges valve 55 against its seat. Access to the valve housing is provided by a removable plate 58 carried by the body 25. Packing rings 59 are provided between the valve housing 36 and the body and packing rings 60 are also provided between the plug 5| and the valve housing. The bottom end of the body presents a nose or ram member 65.
A pair of spaced parallel posts extend upwardly from plate |0 and a horizontal top plate 12 is supported atop the posts, the plate being secured in the position by bolts 14, 14a. Posts 10 are held in spaced relation by bolts 13 and spacers 13a. A shaft 15 is journaled for rotation in posts 10 and carries between the posts a pinion 16 whose teeth mesh with the teeth in the rack 30. Collars 11 are secured on the shaft 15 at the sides of the posts 10.
A capstan 90 is operatively connected to shaft 15 by bevel gears 92, 93, shaft 94, clutch 95, shaft 04a and bevel gear 96, the latter meshing with gear 84, so that oscillation or rotation of the capstan moves the piston 29 by means of the pinion 16 and rack 30.
The clutch 95 consists of a collar |00 slidably but non-rotatably secured on shaft 94a, having an annular recess IDI and a toothed bottom end |02, and a collar |03 secured on the top end of shaft 94 and presenting a lateral clutch pin |04 engageable between teeth provided by the bottom end |02 of the collar |00. A bifurcated lever |06 is pivotally secured between its ends to a bracket |01 supported on the frame and has on its bifurcated outer end trunnions |08 projecting into the recess |0|. A spring |06a connected to lever |06 and an arm on bracket |01 urges the clutch collar |00 downwardly into position engaging collar |03.
A foot pedal ||0 is pivotally connected at one end to one of the frame uprights 5 and isoperatively connected adjacent its free end to the` lever |06 by rod l|| and link ||2. The free end of lever l0 is normally urged upwardly by spring ||5, but the pedal may be set in adjusted position by'a stepped stop member ||6 carried by the frame. A spring ||6d urges pedal ||0 towards the uprights to retain the pedal in engagement with the stop member.
Referring again to the hydraulic unit 1, Within vertical bore 38 I rotatably dispose a shaft 20 whose upper end is secured in a collar |20a journaled in plate I0 and whose tubular intermediate portion |200 is rotatably disposed longitudinally in bore 38. A rod |20b of square cross section has its bottom end engaging in a squared socket in collar |20a. Secured in the lower end of the shaft portion |20a there is a round solid member |20d (Fig. 10) which has four longitudinal slots |20e to pass hydraulic fluid from the reservoir. On lthe bottom end of member |20d there is a reduced diameter portion |20f oiset from the longitudinal axis and a Cam 12| iS r0- tatably mounted on portion |20f. The projecting lower end of shaft portion |20f is journaled in a reduced portion of bore 38. When the shaft is rotated, cam |2| engages and pushes the stem 40a inwardly to first unseat poppet 40, and further rotative movement of the cam causes stem 40h to engage and unseat ball 55. The top end portion of rod |201) is of round cross section and is journaled to top plate 12.
Operation of the clutch 95 and the cam |2| is as follows: In the position in which the parts are illustrated in the various views of the drawings, the clutch is engaged and cam |2| is out of engagement with the valve stem 40a, so that the device is ready to commence operation of the.
The hydraulic unit 1 is normally urged upwardly into the position of Fig. 3 by means of a pair of coil springs |40 connected at their top ends to the top plate 12 and connected at their bottom ends to the respective arms |42 carried by the body 25. l
It will be observed that the Work piston 33, being secured to plate |0, remains stationary While the body 25 of the hydraulic unit moves relative thereto. Thus, for the purpose of admitting hydraulic fluid into the cylinder 21 below the piston as the ram is initially moved relatively rapidly into contact with work in the manner to be hereinafter explained, I provide in the body a valve housing |50 secured in a corresponding bore in the body by means of a snap ring |5|, and communicating with that bore I provide a passageway |52 which communicates with the reservoir 28. The valve housing |50 has a longitudinal bore closed at one end by a threaded plug |54 and has a transverse opening |55 communicating with cylinder 21. A poppet valve |58 is urged against its seat by coil spring |59 to normally close the reduced opening extending between passageway |52 and the interior of the valve housing. Thus as the body 25 initially moves downwardly relative to the piston 33, the vacuum created in the cylinder 21 unseats poppet |58 and draws fluid from the reservoir into cyl-
