1 Claim.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in a combination valve nozzle and more particularly to a combined valve and nozzle of the sleeve type construction. The invention has for one of its objects the provision of an improved construction of this character which will be highly efcient in use and economical in manufacture.
Among the several objects of the invention is the provision of a combination valve and nozzle of the character hereinafter described in which a great spread of water will result with a finer spray of predetermined lengths in la straight line.
A still further object of the invention resides in the fact that the valve and nozzle embodying this invention is capable of a variety of uses.
Another object f the invention is the novel manner of closing and opening the water ports of the nozzle.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangements of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be :best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing showing the preferred form of construction, and in which:
Fig. 1 is a side view of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail View taken substantially on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional detail view of the invention,
In the drawing I have illustrated the preferred form of construction ofthe invention by which the several objects of the invention are attained.
In this connection the nozzle embodying my invention is indicated at I0. This valve includes an outer sleeve II. Formed in this sleeve II at a predetermined point is an .outlet in the form of an elongated slot I2.
'Ihe opposite ends of this sleeve II are closed by caps I3 and IA. The cap I4 `has formed thereon a boss I5. Threaded upon this boss I5 is a bushing I6 within which is a felt or rubber washer Journalled through the boss |5 and the lbushinsr |'6 is a stem I 8. The exterior of this stem carries a handle or knob I9.
The interior end of the stem I8 is secured in any suitable manner to the end wall 20 of a cylinder 2|. Both ends of the cylinder are closed, one by the wall 2Il and the other end by a plug 22. This closed cylinder is adapted to rotate within the sleeve I I.
In the cylindrical wall of this cylinder are formed a plurality of spaced slots 23, 24 and 25. Each of these slots is adapted to register with the outlet I2, The longest of the slots is preferably equal to the length of the outlet I2.
Carried by the sleeve I I is a nipple 26 to which the end of a hose or other supply line is connected. The interior end of this nipple projects through a cutout portion 2'I of the cylinder 2|. The end of this nipple 26 -is closed as at 28. Formed in the side walls of the nipple 2B, within the cylinderl 2| are outlet ports 28.
In addition to the slots 23, 24 and 25 and the outlet slot I2 there may be formed in the walls of the cylinder 2| and sleeve I I circular openings 29 which register when the slots 23, 24 and 25 are out of registration with the slot I2.
By rotating the cylinder 2| the slots 23, 24 and may each be brought into registration with the slot I2 to vary the 1ength and spread out the fineness of the spray, In thisway the area to be covered may be controlled by the operator.
If desirable, in sprinkling lawns or in association of my nozzle with a fire extinguisher system, the same may be mounted in a well-known manner upon a whirling bracket or the like.
The simplicity of construction is at once apparent from the description herein.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modication without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details 0f construction set forth, :but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what `I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
A combination nozzle and valve comprising a sleeve having an elongate-d slot formed therein,
caps closing the ends of the sleeve, a cylinder having closed ends arranged for, rotation in the sleeve and having a plurality of spaced slots formed therein each adapted to register with the slot of said sleeve, a handle, means for connecting the handle to the cylinder to facilitate rotating the latter, means for delivering a iiuid to said cylinder, said means comprising a nozzle carried by the sleeve and having an end projecting through an elongated slot formed in the cylinder and having said end provided with opv poste outlet ports.
