7 Claims.
This invention relates to outsoles.
In shoes as heretofore made, the outsole usually comprised a single piece of sole leather. Due to the war there is a shortage of sole leather for shoes with such soles.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to Yprovide an outsole which is not made of a single piece of sole leather and in which there is a saving of leather.
The wear on the bottom sole of a shoe occurs mostly in the region of the ball of the foot and thereis no wear at the arch or heel portion.
It is therefore another object of the present invention toy provide an outsole in Which there is provided wear resisting material at the lball of the foot.
Yet another object of the present invention is to provide a strong and durable outsole of the character described which shall be relatively inexpensive to manufacture, easy to assemble and incorporate into a shoe, and which shall yet be practical and long wearing and efficient to a high degree.
Other objects of this invention will in part be obvious and in part hereinafter pointed out.
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations of elements, and arrangement of parts which will berexemplilied in the construction hereinafter described, and of which the scope of application will be indicated in the following claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which are shown various possible illustrative embodiments of this invention,
Fig. 1 is an elevational, longitudinal, cross-sectional view of a shoe provided -With an outsole embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional View taken on line l2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional View taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the half sole portion of the improved outsole;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of another portion 1 of the outsole n Fig. '7 is a perspective View of the insert for Fig. 8 is a top plan view of the outsole.
Referring now in detail to the'drawings, III, designates an outsole embodying the invention incorporated into a shoe I I. The outsole I0 comprises a member I2 made of ber'cloth, canvas or the like sheet material having the outer conmaterial'. 25
tour of a full sole, but formed with a cutout I3 at the ball portion thereof of somewhat v.triangular shape, leaving av strip I4 at the, sides of' the cutout of substantiallyuniform width. The
member I2` of uniform thickness as show n inFig.
6 of the drawings. v
Inserted Within the cutout I3i is an insert I5,y which may be made of. leather, canvas, reclaimed .rubben compressed cotton, or the like flexible wear The insert I5 has the same.;
Said insert is of vthe resisting material. shape as the cutout I3. samethickness as member I2 so that the top and bottom of the insert is flush withy the top and bottom of member I2.
Glued to the top of members I2, I5 and super-` imposed thereon, is a half sole platform member I8 likewise made of ber cloth, canvas or the like sheet material. The member I8 covers the front `any suitable adhesive.
The bottom of members I2, I5 is covered by a cover member 20 which may be made of split leather, cloth, canvas or the like flexible, sheet of members I2, I8 and inwardly over the top of said members as at 2|. The inwardly turned half of member I2 and is adhered thereto byv Member 28 is folded over the side edges .the sole. The bottom surfaces of members I2 and I5 are furthermore glued or otherwise adhered to the upper surface of member 20. l
The outer edges of member 20 may be slit formed .with darts at the rear, front and at the inner arch portion as designated -by numeral 24 to facilitate folding and flattening of the inwardly folded portion 2 I. v
A triangular line of stitching 25 may be provided as shown in Fig. 'l of the drawings, passing through the filler or insert I5, half sole I8, and `bottom portion 20. If desired the triangular line of stitching 25 may extend only through the ller I5 and half sole I8. This triangular line of stitching prevents shifting of the insert and reinforces the outsole as the place of greatest Wear and to hold the covering layer 28 to the insert.
It rwill now be understood that the outsole is i more wear resisting at the ball of the foot Where may be attached to the outsole in the usual manner by cementing or by stitching.
It will be noted that the outsole comprises three layers so that the outsole is not Worn through until al1 three layers are Worn through. The bottom layer is, of course, the covering 2B, the next layer is the leather insert, and the top layer is the half sole. Of course after one or more layers are Worn through the outsole may be repaired by attachment thereto of a half sole of leather or other material.r 'lhewhole sole member 412 as well as theA halt sole member |81may bemade of canvas, composition or plastic material instead of fiber. plastic material, if desired.
It will be noted that the upper surface of the sole presents exposed stitching 22 and 25 which; serves the additional purpose of enabling the upper to be cemented to the sole. The stitching will not absorb the cementand will facilitateA `the cementing operation.
It willi thusbe seen that thereY is provided a device inwhich the several objects of this invention areachieved, and@ which is Well adapted t meet the-conditions offpracticaluse.
Asvarious possible embodiments might bemadeof the above invention, and as Various changes might be made in the embodiments above set forth, it isfto be understoodthat all matterherein set forth-or shown in the accompanyingI dra-W ings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in. a'limitingsense'.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claimas-.newj and desirerto secure by Letters Patent: l
