-Patented Aug. 21, 1945- some caanma Howard J (Fischer, Springfield Township, Hamilton County, Ohio, asslgn'or to The Gardner- Bichardson Company,
nation of Ohio Middletown, Ohio, acor- Application Dccember 22, 1941, Serial No. 424.035
40mins.
My invention relates to bottle carriers which in general structural relationship consist of a base, two side walls, end straps to prevent lateral movement of bottles held by the side walls in position on the base, together with some kind of a'handle arrangement. a
The particular improvement in the present structure has to do with the provision of end straps of a simple form, which are articulated to the side walls only of the carrier and can be formed and connected together during the con-- 7 struction of .the carrier in the flat, and readily set up during the'act of erecting the carrier. The essence of the invention lies in connecting the end strap portions proper to the side walls of the carton by means of integral triangular portions, de-
fined by score lines. 7 V I accomplish my objects by that certain construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more specifically pointed out with reference to a specific example and the novelty of which is set forth in the claims that follow, to which reference is here made for expressing the invention in the described example thereof.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a plan view of a blank showing the original cutting and scoring.
Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the blank folded on one of the score lines for the base thereof.
Fig. 3 illustrates the next stage of the operation wherein the ends of the tongues forming the end straps are stitched together.
Fig. 4 is a perspective of the erected blank preparatory to insertion of a handle.
Fig. 5 shows the same parts with the handle inserted and the end straps set up.
Fig. 6 shows a side view of the completed article with bottles indicated in place.
. Fig. 7. is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. 6. 1
The blank has a base portion 1, and side wall portions 2, .2, deflned'from each other by score lines, shown in dotted form. Projections 3, 3,
tongues connected at their projected ends to eachother and connected to the side walls by triangular portions.
The terminations on the projections 3, in the form of turn-over tabs 8, which lap each other and form a, three thickness end to these projections, is not of my invention. Any sort of reinforcement of the ends of the projections will serve my purpose, however, since this is not a part of the novelty herein. As shown, the projections and the pairof tabs 8 are punched with holes 9, which when the tabs are turned over-come into line with each other. IA handle ll) of any desired type is then thrust through the holes.
Since the end strap portions are articulated to the side walls by triangular portions, as described it is a simple operation to seize the said portions in the fingers, after the blank has been erected as shown in Fig. 4, and turning inwardly to bring .said straps to the position shown in Fig. 5.
Bottles, as indicated at 11, may be inserted into the carrier when erected, and thereafter the hanfrom the side walls form handle receiving portions. Tabs 4 also project from the edges of the side wall portions in such a way as to form the end strap. members. It will be noted that triangular portions 4a, 4a, are formed by the line of severance 5,'the score line 6 and the score line I, with respect to each of the end strap portions.
As shown in Fig. 2, the blank so formed is folded on one of the base score lines, whereupon as shown in Fig. 3 the two upper end flap portions are bent down and stitched to the other twoend flap portions, .thus forming straps formed of said handle receiving die inserted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and-desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
- 1. In a bottle carrier or similar structure formed from a boxboard blank, a bottom wall, a side wall articulated to each side edge of the bottom wall, a. handle receiving portion integral with and forming a central extension on each Qf'the'said side walls, a tongue lying on each side of each handle receiving portion, said tongues being articulated to the respective side walls along diagonal score lines and separated from said handle receiving portions, each side wall further having a, diagonal cut therein joined to the corresponding one of said diagonal score lines, tnesald'cut line and the said score line joining a transverse score linein each of said tongues, the tongues joined to one side wall-being inwardly bent on said transverse score lines and attached to the respective tongues joined to the other side wall whereby to form a tubular structure capable of erection, the said diagonal cuts and diagonal score lines enabling the joined tongues to be turned down oppositely into substantially vertical planes whereby to provide end walls for the structure located adjacent the ends of the said side walls.
2. The structure claimed in claim 1. wherein portions have triangular, articulated parts at their folded over to form end'reinforcements, said handle receiving portions and said triangular re-- ends capable of being i iniorcements being perforated with mating periorations for the attachment of a handle.
3. A bottle carrier comprising a blank having means to form a side wall, a base and a side wall in the order named, upper portions of said side walls being cut to provide each a central, upstanding, handle receiving portion and a pair of tongues, one lying on each side 01' the handle receiving portion, said tongues each being articulated to the side walls by score lines diagonal to the lateraledges of the side walls, there being lines of cutextending diagonally downward from inner edges of said tongues and meeting said diagonal score lines, said tongues also being scored parallel to the lines of artlculationoi said side walls to said base, and being of a length to connect with the respective opposite tongues across between the side walls and thereby be attached together in pairs at their ends, whereby each pair of the joined tongues may be turned downwardly and outwardly to occupy a substantially vertical plane so as to form an end wall connecting said side walls substantially at each end thereof.
4. The structure claimed in claim 3 wherein said upstanding handle receiving portions have means for the attachment of a handle bridging across between them, and including parts of said upstanding handle receiving portions foldable along score lines diagonal t9 the vertical to provide a reinforcement at the upper ends of said 15 handle reinforcing portions.
