The arrangements already known for the reguiation oithe temperature in internal combustion motors during the starting or working of the moat the moment of starting during cold seasons or in cold climates, eliminate the long period of time necessary for raising to a suitable value the temperature of the cooling fluid and of the lubrieating means.
. The systems hitherto employed, consistingin thermostats by which and under certain conditions of temperature the cooling water passes through a short circuit, do not correspond to modern exigencies, as they'represent an excessive loss of fuel since they keep the circulating water pump and the fan running, so that under determined working conditions of the motor, the result is completely unsuitable.
The object of this invention is shown as a nonlimitative example, in he attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows, in side view and partially in section, the arrangement of the whole of the cooling system in an internal combustion motor. Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the controlling-arrangement in a schematic form.
This invention facilitates the heating of the motor in the act of starting by means of an arrangement that couples or uncouples the air cooling fan and the centrifugal pump for the circulating water, and which is made up in the following way: 7
In the drawings, the radiator as shown by I, the fan by 2, b I the centrifugal pum for the circulation of the water or cooling medium. by 4 the piping conducting the-cooling means from the engine jacket I to the radiator I. by 6 the piping conducting the cooling means from the radiator I to the pump 3 and by 1 there is indicated the piping that conducts the means from the pump 3 to the jacket of the engine I.
In the jacket oi the engine there is mounted a thermostat I in such a way that it is surrounded by the cooling means circulating through thermostat penetrates into a chamber ill of the pressure oil circulating system which receives 01! under pressure by a suitable piping not shown. To this chamber Hi there is joined a piping II that carries the pressure oil to the clutch for coupling or uncoupling the pump 3 and the fan 2 described later on.
The stem 9 coupled to the extensible element of the thermostat 8 is provided with grooves l2 in such a way that they close or open the passage of the pressure oil, in order that this may pene- .trate into ,the piping l l and consequently into the above mentioned clutch for coupling or uncoupling the pump, 3 and the fan 2.
This clutch is constructed as part of the hand starting apparatus l3, in which there is found a chamber it, into which by means of the piping ii there penetrates the pressure oil. ,This oil acts on a piston I5 joined to a plate It which in turn acts on a friction disc l'l mounted in such a way that it may slide lengthwise but cannot turn freely on the hollow shaft l8. To this end,
the shaft is provided with a keyway l8 and the disc l'l with a key l'l movably disposed therein. 1
On this shaft it there is fixed the driving pulley it which, through any appropriate transmission,
for example by means of a trapezoidal belt 20 and a pulley 2 I, drives the fan 2 and the pump 3. To
the shaft of the engine there is fixed a drum '22 which according to the position of the plate l6 drives by means of the friction disc the pulley l9 as will be stated later on.
The arrangement object of this invention acts in the following way:
Supposing that a'cold motor has to be started, the movable element of the thermostat 8 and consequentlythe stem- 9 are found in such aposition that it closes the access of the pressure oil to the piping H and to the chamber H, in such a way that on the piston l5 there is no pressure and consequently the pulley I9 is uncoupled and at rest, as well as the fan 2 and the pump 3..
As soon as the cooling means are warmed up in the engine jacket, passing from a determined temperature to which the thermostat 8 has been regulated, the expansible element of this latter,
causes the stem 9 to move in a position to open the passage of the pressure oil to the piping II and consequently to the chamber ll in which it acts on the piston 15. Under the action of the oil, the piston is displaced causing the plate I I forming part of the same to follow. This plate pushes the friction disc I! towards the drumi! which turns together with the shaftof the motor.
causing the said disc I! to turn'and consequently making the shaft l8 turn, on which is mounted the pulley l9 which drives the fan 2 and the pump 3.
With this there takes place the reactivation of the circulation of the cooling means in the jacket of the motor, as well as the supplementary cooling by air.
; It will be understood that this invention may be carried'out also in a different way from that described and that the component parts may present forms and arrangements differing from those ider pressure, a cooling medium circuit and pump means for circulating cooling medium through said circuit, a cooling fan, means for actuating said fan and pump means and comprising clutch on the one hand and said fan and pump means on .the other hand, and means for placing said clutch jmeans under the influence of pressure lubricant ifrom' said lubricating system and for removing said clutch means from said influence in accordance with the temperature of the cooling medium jin said cooling medium circuit.

2. The relationship of parts recited in claim 1 said last-named means being thermostat-controlled, and a controlling thermostat arranged in said. cooling medium circuit and extending into 3. In a cooling system for an internal combustion engine having a pressure fluid system and means for circulating ,fiuid therethrough under pressure, a cooling medium circuit and pump means for circulating cooling medium through" said circuit, a cooling fan, means for actuating said fan and pump means and comprising clutch means for interconnecting said actuating means i on the one hand and said fan and pump means on the other hand, and means for placing said clutch 1 means under the'influence of pressure fluid from j said-pressure fluid system and for removing said means for interconnectingsaid .actuating means clutch means from said influence in accordance with the temperature of the cooling mediumin said cooling medium circuit.
4. The relationship oi. parts recited in claim 3,
said last-named means being thermostat-conv trolled, and a controlling thermostat arranged in said cooling medium circuit and extending into said pressure fluid system.
