Thus, the top 9 is secured to the base I for swinging movement in a vertical plane, as seen in Figure 2 of the drawings. The bottom III is further provided, adjacent the head I2 but spaced therefrom, with openings I5 for the reception of thedowels 8. Referring now to the drawings in detail, it will be seen that the embodiment of the invention substantially rectangular plan which is designated generally by reference numeral I, said base being of any suitable dimensions and material. The base I is of substantially hollow construction, said base including a bottom 2 and end and side walls 3 and 4, respectively. Thus, a chamber or compartment 5 is provided for the reception of linens, etc., said chamber or compartment being open at its top. A cushion 6 of sponge rubber or other suitable material is provided on top of the base I.

The outer faces of the base members 3 and 4 are concave in cross section.

As illustrated to advantage in Figure 3 of the drawings, one of the end members 3 of the base I has formed therein arcuate sockets I. The

It is thought that the manner of using the bed will be readily apparent from a consideration of the foregoing. Briefly, with the bed in lowered position, as seen in Figure 1 of the drawings, the top 9 constitutes a cover or closure for the linen chamber 5 in the base I. Of course, access may be readily had to the chamber 5 by swinging the top 9 upwardly to an inclined position where it is supported by the toggles I6. Projection of the foot end portion of the top 9 beyond the base I reduces the distance that the head end of said top must travel to reach raised position. It is believed that the many advantages of a bed constructed in accordance with the present invention will be readily understood and although a preferred embodiment of-the device is as illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of parts may be resorted to which will fall within-the scope of the invention as claimed.

Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:

A bed Comprising a-substantially rectangular base, said base having upwardly opening, arcuate sockets in the top surface of one end portion thereof, dowels rising from theother end portion of the base, an elongated top mounted longitudinally on the base -and projecting't beyond the '10 ends of said base, said top including a bottom, arcuate elongated pins depending from the bottom and operable in the sockets for connecting the top to the base for swinging movement on the edge of the end first mentioned, said bottom having openings therein for the reception of the dowels, and a pad of resilient material fitted over the top of said base and through which said pins and dowels extend. l r
