Description
EETTEE sTATEs PATENT oEETcE.
JAS. WILSON, C. GREEN, AND WM. WILSON, JR., OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE.
MACHINE FOR CORRUGATIN'G SHEET METAL.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 23,736, dated April 19, 1859.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JAMES WILSON, CHARLES GREEN, and VILLIAM l/VILsoN, Jr., of l/Vilmington, in Newcastle county, and State of Delaware, have invented a new and Improved Oorrugating-Machine, and do declare the following to be a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This machine consists of two horizontal axles A A; upon the two ends of which are placed corrugated heads B B, C C. The lower heads B B are conical having their smallest diameter pointing inwardly. The upper heads C C are also conical but the smallest diameter points outwardly. The lower axle A and heads B B are connected by cog wheels or other suitable arrangement with the motive power. The upper axle and heads C C are connected by means of a lever D, D, D with a treadle E by which means they maybe pressed upon the lower heads. The upper heads are `made to revolve by means of the friction between them and the lower ones. By having no connection between the upper and lower heads, different sized heads may be used without rendering any alteration of the gearing necessary.
b b f are small wheels which are employed to support the cylinder to be corrugated, at the requisite inclination so that it will have a tendency to press against the gage G.
Behind the upper and lower heads are forming rollers H, H, which are employed to keep the cylinder round.
The mode of operating our machine is as follows, a cylinder of metal isl first formed by any convenient mode. The plane cylinder thus formed is placed on either one of the conical heads. By pressing upon the treadle the two heads are forced together and being made to revolve the cylinder is corrugated in a manner corresponding to the corrugations on the heads. The advantage of the heads on both ends of the axles A A is that two cylinders may be corrugated at one time. Metallic kegs corrugated in this manner are stronger than plane ones and much easier to handle.
Having thus described our improvement what we claim as our invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The arrangement of the upper and lower heads, the forming rollers H, H, together with the rollers which support the cylinder to be corrugated, at the requisite angle, substantially as above described.
