GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,673, dated January 18, 1881.
Application filed June 21, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN O. GaEssEY, of Oollinsville, in the county of Madison and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of thespecification, and in which- I Figure 1 is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 shows the latch drawn back and the gate partly open.

This invention relates to that class of gates that can not only be opened by foot-passengers at the latch, but can be opened from a carriage, on horseback, or from a load of hay, by a suitable arrangement of cords and pulleys, in connection with weight-boxes at the back part of the gate, and below the top of the fence, that can be loaded with sand or any heavy substance, whereby the gate can be so nearly balanced that from the central point it will just find its way to the ground, and cannot fall heavily and break to pieces, as this class of tilting gates are so liable to do, and it also makes the action of the heaviest gates very light.
It further consists, in combination with cords and pulleys, of a latch or locking device that has no springs or catches to grow weak or be broken by general use and rough handling.
In the drawings, A A are the main posts of the gate. They are connected at the top by a cap, B, provided with two swinging pulleys, G O.
D D are back posts, on the tops of which are pivoted weight-boxes E E. On the front ends, at F, are bolted or pivoted two iron straps, G G.
H is the gate, which may be of any suitable construction, and is arranged between the posts A A and a third post, I.
J J are walking-beams or lifting-arms, ar-
(Model) ranged in pairs on each side of the gate and pivoted to the sills K'K, which are securely fastened to the front posts, AA, and back posts, I) D. These walking-beams or arms are also pivoted, at L L, to the top board of the gate, which, when the arms are tilted, is carried by them between and to the other side of the posts A A.
The latch M, I do not claim as my invention, but only claim it in combination with the cords and pulleys. It is a piece of board loosely hung by wires N N and provided with a knob at O, and is hung so that by its own weight it is dropped through a mortise, P, in post I. The cord Q is attached to the latch M and passes through eyelets R, then through pulleys O O, and from there to posts ten feet away from the gate, provided with brackets and pulleys and conveniently arranged to work from a vehicle. The iron straps G G are bolted or pivoted to lifting-arms at S. Then sand or bricks are placed in the boxes according to the weight of the gate, so it will just find its way to the ground from the center. Then covers are put on the boxes and nailed down.
Now, as the passenger approaches, the gate is so nearly balanced by weights E E that by a slight pull of the cord at T the latch is drawn back, as shown in Fig. 2, and the gate is thrown open. Then, in passing through, a corresponding touch at the other post, T, closes it.
Persons on foot can draw the latch at the knob O, and as the gate need not be raised to the center to pass through, it is sure to close and latch behind them, the weights only a1- lowing it to fall gently in place, and when latched it cannot be opened by stock.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In combination with the gate H, having walking-beams or lifting-arms J J and front posts, A A, and back posts, I) D, bearing the counter-weights E E, the combination of the pull-cords Q, Q, and pulleys O O with the latch N, and operating substantially as described.
