This invention relates to means for identifying and controlling the movements of persons permitted to go in and upon restricted areas or places, such as factories making war materials.

Many systems for this and similar purposes have heretofore been proposed and used, but these have been found inadequate to guard against improper movements of a person once he has been permitted to pass into the restricted area, and hence it is quite customary to escort the person to and from the places or persons he desires to Visit. This escort work uses up many man hours of time and constitutes a direct vand unnecessary loss, especially in cases where the visitor is no stranger to the personnel of the plant and has knowledge of the locations of the departments or places he desires to visit.

To avoid the necessity of thus escorting a person in order that his movements may be controlled, the present invention provides a pass or badge adapted to be conspicuously worn by the visitor, and which contains not only data necessary to identify the visitor and his purpose or mission, but also to visually indicate to any other person in the restricted area whether the visitor is proceeding to an authorized original destination, or is returning therefrom, or is going from an original destination to one or more other destinations in the restricted area.

The pass of the present invention is preferably in the form of a tag to -be worn on the clothing of the visitor and to be exposed to View at all times. It is made of two main sections, one to be displayed when entering the restricted area and proceeding to an original destination, and the other to be shown when returning from the visit and on the way out. These sections preferably are characteristically different in shape, size, color, etc. so that by mere casual observation of the part displayed, a guard or other person may know whether the visitor is proceeding in accordance with his authorization.

Preferably, the two sections of the device are made in one piece and are connected together along a medial fold line so thatv upon being folded the section permitting entry, while visible. conceals the section permitting departure. The fold line between the two sections is preferably weakened so that when the visitor is permitted to proceed toward the exit of the restricted area, the part authorizing entrance is removed. leaving the visitor only with the part permitting his departure.

The two sections of the pass are provided with suitable indicia-receiving spaces in which may Company, Hoboken,

be indicated the time when the visitor arrived at the original destination and the time when he departed, and comparison of these times with the time when the visitor reaches the exit and surrenders the leaving section of the pass will serve to show whether or not the visitor proceeded promptly to his destination on entering and to the exit after leaving the place to which he was permitted to go.

To keep a record of the tags or badges issued as well as the data concerning the Visitor and his business, for each pass there is provided a printed record copy containing designated spaces for receiving indicia pertaining to the visitor and his Visit.

The tags and the record copies thereof are preferably furnished in superposed continuous form and when a suitable copying material is placed between them, as in a manifolding machine, the matter written on the record copy will be reproduced on the pass.

Both the record copy and the pass may be provided with suitable feed-arresting and formregistering apertures to maintain the record and pass in alignment and registration during the writing operation, and to permit the issuance of only one record and pass at each operation of the machine. These apertures in the pass sheet may be supplemental weakening lines so that they may be enlarged conveniently to slip over a button on the coat of a visitor.

Many times the visitor is to be permitted to go from his original destination to other destinations in the plant or other restricted area before he departs. To permit this to be done and to make a record of his sojourns, the pass of the present invention is provided with another section preferably characteristically different in appearance from the entering and leaving sections on which is given the authorizations for-the visitor to transfer from one place to ano-ther in a restricted area. The transfer authorizing section may be provided on the back of the entrancepermitting part and thus when a person is permitted to transfer from one destination to another, the pass is folded along the weakened fold line to display the transfer section. The latter likewise preferably has spaces to receive a record of the time when the visitor arrives at and departs from the various places to which he is permitted to go. When the visitor is about to depart from the last place, the part of the pass containing the entering and transferring sections is severed from the part containing the leaving at the last destination. v

In order to avoid fraud and unauthorized endorsement of the transferring section and at the same time to make a record on the leaving section of the destinations and arriving and leaving time thereof, the present invention provides a special copy making device which may be inserted between the two parts of thefolded over sheet so that when the endorsements are made on the transferring section a copy thereof will appear on the leaving section. This transfer device is preferably in the form of an ink, as distinguished from carbon paper so that the records on the leaving section are produced in permanent form and may not be changed without detection.

Other features and advantages will hereinafter appear.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one form of this invention as exemplary thereof:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of a supply of continuous passes and record copies made in accordance with the present invention.

Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the pass in position on the transfer device which is used for recording intermediate destinations on the transfer and leaving sections of the pass.

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the copying making device.

Fig. 4 is a schematic transverse sectional view of the assembly shown in Fig. 2, showing the relationship between the pass and the copying and backing sheets.

As shown in the accompanying drawings, the record sheets I and pass sheets II may be furnished as continuous strips divided at formlength intervals by weakening lines I2 on which the strips may be torn to form the sheets IU and II. The strips may be zigzag folded to form a pack I3 as shown in Fig. 1, or they may be wound in a roll if desired. The record sheet I0 and the pass sheet I I may be used in a manifolding machine so that they may be filled in simultaneously, When so used, the sheets I0 and II are preferably provided with feed-arresting form-registering apertures I4 at the edges of the sheets and apertures I in the body of the sheets to cooperate with known mechanism in the manifolding machine.

As illustrated in Figs. 6 to 9 inclusive, the apertures I5 in the pass sheets are intersected by slits I6 so that the hole may be enlarged suinciently to be slipped over a button (diagrammatically illustrated at I'I) on the coat or other part of the clothing of the visitor.

In the preferred form of this invention, the pass sheet II is divided into two parts by a line of perforations I8 lextending preferably longitudinally midway between the side edges of the sheet. The sheet Il is printed with suitable indicia and indicia-receiving spacesso as to constitute three active sections-an entering section I9 on the face of one part of the sheet, a leaving section 2D on the face of the other part of the sheet, and a transferring section 2I on the back of the part containing the entering section I9 of the sheet. These sections I9, 20 and 2| are preferably characteristically different in appearance. As indicated in the accompanying drawings by shading lines, the section I9 is tinted green, section 20 is tinted red, and the section 2| is tinted yellow, these colors indicating respectively to whom it may concern that the visitor displaying the pass should be proceeding in an enterin.;r direction to a designated place, or should be uroceeding in a leaving direction from a designated place, or may be passing from one designated place to another designated place in the restricted area.

Obviously, any suitable color scheme, or, for that matter, other physical or visual characteristics may be employed to differentiate between the different uses to which the pass is put, but the colors above-mentioned are preferable since by reference to their usual uses green generally indicates that one may proceed further, red indicates that one may not proceed further, and yellow indicates that one may pass with caution.

From a comparison of Figs. 5 and 6, it will be seen that the record sheet I0 and the pass sheet Il are provided with corresponding delineating or designated indicia-receiving spaces such as the delineated spaces 22 for receiving notations of the date and time; the designated spaces 23 for receiving a notation as to the original destination of the visitor, the party that he is to see, and the purpose of his visit; the designated spaces 24 for receiving the visitors name and his busness connections; the spaces 25 for receiving the i visitors badge number and description of the type of clothing worn; and the spaces 26 for the signature of the receptionist. These spaces 22 to 26 inclusive are so placed on the record sheet I0 and on the pass sheet II that when these sheets are superposed in alignment as in an autographic register, entries made on the record sheet will be reproduced in corresponding places on the pass sheet.

In the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, the notations above referred to will be reproduced on the entering section I9 of the pass sheet so that, in case of suspicion, a guard or other person may determine, by inspecting the entering section, whether or not the visitor is proceeding promptly to his destination-the information on the record sheet permitting the guard or other person to confirm the authority of the visitor by communicating with the receptionist.

Other information recorded on the record sheet I Il in the embodiment of the invention herein disclosed is transferred to the leaving section 2U, and hence the record sheet and leaving section have corresponding delineated spaces 21 to indicate the date and the time of issuance of the pass, and designated spaces 28 to indicate the original destination of the visitor. Other information, such as that provided for in designated spaces 29, may also be provided, and a designated space 30 for the signature of the visitor may also be provided.

acca-rae When a visitor approaches the receptionist for a pass, the latter fills out the appropriate designated spaces, and after the visitor has applied his signature to the pass the manifolding machine is operated to issue both the record copy and the pass sheet. These are torn from the following sheets and the pass is folded longitudinally on the fold line I8 so as to expose the entering section I9 and fastened to the visitors clothing as by placing a button through the apertures I and slits I6. When the visitor arrives at his destination, the person in charge enters the time of his arrival in a designated space 3| on the leaving section 20, and, upon departure of the visitor from his original destination, the departing time is entered in a designated space 32 and the person in authority at the destination applies his signature to designated space 33.

'Assuming that the visitor is to leave immediately upon concluding his business at his original destination, the person in charge severs the Dass along the .weakening line I8 and delivers to the visitor only the leaving section 20. The visitor then returns to the exit, and upon departing leaves the section of the pass with the receptionist and at the same time applies his signature to the designated space 34 on the record copy.

In many cases, the visitor, after arriving at his original destination, is redirected to another destination, or he may desire to visit several other destinations before leaving. To permit the transfer of the visitor and to indicate his authority to travel from place to place, the transfer section 2l is provided on the pass. This is preferably provided on the back of the part of the pass containing the entering section I9, so that, by merely reversing the fold of the pass as issued to the visitor, it may serve for this purpose, and being of a distinctive color or appearance will indicate to anyone that the visitor has authority to proceed. In order to control the movements of the visitor, the transfer section 2l of the pass is provided with designated spaces 35 in which his second and third `destinations may be indicated, and designated spaces 36 in which his arrival and departure from his second and third destinations may be noted.

In order to permit the receptionist to be informed as tothe transferring of the visitor and, in order to indicate when the visitor is leaving and that -he is properly leaving from the intermediate destinations, spaces 35a and 36a are provided on 'the leaving section corresponding t0 the spaces 35 and 36yon the transferring section, and these are so placed that when the sheet is folded as shown in Figs. 2 and 8, these corresponding spaces will be in registry depthwise so that inscriptions made on the transferring section can also be reproduced on the leaving section by the interposing of suitable copying material 31.

The writings to be made in the designated spaces 3|, 32 and 33 may be made simultaneously on the transferring section and on the leaving section by writing directly on the transferring section and interposing copying material 31 between the two.

To prevent fraudulent or unauthorized entries on the transferring section and the leaving ,section and to prevent the altering of the records made on the leaving section, the present invention provides a copying medium 31 in the form of an ink impregnated paper rather than a carb'on carrying paper. Since the inscriptions made on the leaving section will be made in ink, and since the sections are preferably colored by tinting, any erasure of the inscriptions on the leaving section may be easily detected.

To facilitate the making of entries on the transferring section 2| and the leaving section 20, the present invention provides a copying sheet holding device 38 which has a backing sheet 39 and end strips 40 holding the copying sheet 31, working-face down, against the 'backing sheet. When entries are to be made on the transferring section 2|, the two parts of the sheet are spread so that the leaving section will pass under the copying sheet 31 while the transferring section will pass over it, as shown in Fig. 2. The persons authorized to receive visitors at the various places within a restricted area are furnished with these transferring devices.

When a visitorhas nished his business at' the last authorized destination, the person at that point severs the part of the sheet containing the entering and transferring sections from the part containing the leaving sectionv and retains it. leaving with the visitor only the leaving part which is his authority to proceed directlyto the receptionist Where he surrenders the leaving part and acknowledges his time -of departure by applying his signature tothe record sheet.

It will thus be seen that with the pass system of the present invention, the passage of persons to and about restricted areas may be closely controlled and regulated without ernpoyingthe time which would be required -by the use of personal escorts and without subjecting the visitor to unnecessary embarrassment. When the visitor displays t-he green or entering section of the Dass. he maiT proceed unmolested to his destination. Likewise, when he is transferring or leaving, provided he is goingr in the direction which the pass itself indicates` he may proceed without questioninfr. it being merely necessary for the guard or other interested person to examine the pass to rnake sure that his progress is truly in the right direction. And when he displays the red leaving section he can without offense be directed to the exit should he be observed proceeding in the wrong. direction.

The back of the part of the pass sheet Il having the leaving section on its face may be left plain or may contain printed instructions to the users.

Variations and modifications may be made within the scope of this invention and portions of the improvements ma-y be used without others.

I claim:

l. A pass comprising a sheet having an indiciabearingr (entering section. an indicia-bearing transfer section and an indicia-bearing leaving section. a weakening line between the entering section and the leaving section along which the sheet may be folded in one direction to superpose the entering section over the leaving section and in the other direction to superpose the transferring section over the leaving section, and along which weakening line the sheet may be severed to separate the leaving section from the entering and transferring sections, said entering and leaving sections being arranged side by side on the same face'of the sheet and the transferring section being arranged on the opposite face of the sheet under the entering section so that when the sheet is folded entries vmay be made simultaneously on the transferring and leaving sections through the medium of copying material interposed between them.

2. A pass comprising a sheet having an entering section, a transfer section and a leaving section, a weakening line between the entering section and the leaving section along which the sheet may be folded in one direction to superpose the entering section over the leaving section and in the other direction to superpose the transferring section over the leaving section, and along which weakening line the sheet may be severed to separate the leaving section from the entering and transferring sections, said transferring section and leaving section having designated indiciareceiving spaces in registry depthwise when the transferring section is folded over the leaving section.

A manifolding assembly comprising a record sheet and a pass sheet superposed in manifolding relation, said pass sheet having an entering section, a transfer section and a leaving section, a weakening line between the entering section and the leaving section along which the sheet may be folded in one direction to superpose the entering section over the leaving section and in the other direction to superpose the transferring section over the leaving section, and along which weakening line the sheet may be severed to separate the leaving section from the entering and transferring sections, said transferring section and leaving section having designated indicia-receiving spaces in registry depthwise when the transferring section is folded over the leaving section, said record sheet overlying sthe entering and leaving section and said sections and record sheet having designated indiciareceiving spaces in registry depthwise wherein information recorded on the record sheet is transferred to the entering and leaving sections.

'I'he invention defined in claim 2 wherein indication of the right of the bearer to move in the restricted area, the green entering section indicating permission to proceed into the area, the yellow transfer section indicating a caution as to the right of the bearer to move about in the particular area, and the red'leaving section indicating permission to proceed out of the area.

6. A manifolding assemblycomprising a pass sheet having an indicia-bearing entering section, an indicia-bearing transfer section and an indicia-bearing leaving section, a weakening line between the entering section and the leaving section along which the sheet may be folded in one direction to superpose the entering section over the leaving section and in the other direction to superpose the transferring section over the leaving section, and along which weakening line the sheet may be severed to separate the leaving section from the `entering and transferring sections. said entering and leaving sections being ar- I ranged side by side on the same face of the sheet the entering, leaving and transfer sections are distinctively colored whereby, when folded along the weakening line and the sections individually displayed, the sections may be readily recognized.

5. A pass for use in controlling and indicating the permissive movements of the bearer in a restricted area, comprising a sheet having a green entering section, a yellow transfer section and a red leaving section, a weakening line between the entering section and the leaving section along which the sheet may be folded in one direction to superpose the entering section over the leaving section and in the other direction to superpose the transferring section over the leaving section, and along which weakening line the sheet may be severed to separate the leaving section from the entering and transferring sections, said transferring section and leaving section having designated indicia-receiving spaces in registry 4depthwise when the transferring section is folded over the leaving section, said sections when individually exposed giving a visual and the transferring section being arranged on the opposite face of the sheet under the entering section so that when the sheet is folded entries may be made simultaneously on the transferring and leaving sections through the medium of copying material interposed between them; and a record sheet in superposed manifolding relation with said pass sheet and overlying the side-by-side entering and leaving sections and having indicia-receiving spaces in depthwise registry with corresponding indicia-receiving spaces on the entering and leaving sections of the pass sheet.

7. A manifolding assembly comprising a continuous `strip divided by transverse weakening lines into a succession of pass sheets each having an entering section, a transfer section and a leaving section, a weakening line between the entering section and the leaving section along which the sheet may be folded in one direction to superpose the entering section over the leaving section and in the otherdirection to superpose the transferring section over the leaving section, and along which weakening line the sheet may be severed to separate the leaving section from the entering and transferring sections, said transferring section and leaving section having designated indicia-receiving spaces in registry depthwise when the transferring section is folded over the leaving Section, and a continuous strip likewise divided by the transverse weakening lines into a succession of record sheets in superposed manifolding relation with said pass sheets and having designated indicia-receiving spaces in depthwise registry with correspond# ing designated indicia-receiving spaces on' the entering and leaving sections of the pass sheet EDMUND P.
