NPETERS. FHOTO-LIYNOGRAPMER WASHIN TON D C UNITE STATES STEPHEN T. STOUT, OF CEDAR GROVE, GEORGIA.
CHURN-OPERATING MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,379, dated. January 4, 1881.
Application filed J une 5, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN T. STOUT, of Cedar Grove, in the county of Walker and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churn-Operating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part ofthis specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a rear elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a view of the dasher.
My invention relates to a churn-operating machine; and it consists in the features of construction and combination, as will be fully set forth in the following description and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, A designates a table, under which the churn is to be placed during the operation ot'churning. The table is supported by two pairs of legs, B, these legs being formed with slots (J and crossed, so as to admit of the bolts D being passed through the slots 0. The bolts are secured to plates E at one end, and passed through flanged plates 0 at their remaining ends, nuts F beingemploycd to tighten up the plates against the legs. By this means the table can be raised or lowered by loosening the nuts and shifting the position of the bolts in the slots of the legs. the latter being expanded or contracted, according to the direction in which the bolts are shifted. Upon the table are secured two standards, G G, which are connected at their top ends by an arch, El. Between the arch and the table are two pairs of horizontal bars, I I, in the upper pair of which isjournaled the shaft of a gear, K, and in the lower pair is journaled the shaft of a smaller gear, L, which intermeshes with the larger gear K. Upon the shaftof the upper gear is a handle, M, by means of which motion may be imparted to the said gear. 0n the shaft of the lower and smaller gear is a wheel,
(No model.)
N, to which is pivoted a rod, P. This rod connects at its upper end with a slide, R, which works vertically between two guide-bars, S S, these bars being secured at their lower ends to a block, T, upon the metal plate T, which is embedded in thetable. The spokes ofthe wheel N have holes N, so thatthe pivot of the rod P may be transferred to a position nearer to the center of the wheel when desired, thus making a shorter stroke of the dasherrod U, which is secured to the slide.
The dasher V is formed similarly to an ordinary propeller-wheel, and is arranged loosely upon the lower end of the dasher-rod, whereby, as it is raised or lowered through the cream in the churn, it will have partial rotations.
\V.is a bar, secured at one end to the arch of the standards, and also secured at its remaining end to the upper ends of the guidebars S S.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of a churn-operating mechanism with the table A, the legs B, with slots 0, the bolts 1), passed through said slots, the plates E e, and the tightening-nuts whereby the table can be raised or lowered, substantially as shown and specified.
2. In a churn-operating mccl1anisn1,the combination of the table A with the standards G, arch H, at the upperends of the standards, the horizontal bars 1, gears K L. having their shafts journaled in the horizontal bars, the wheel N, connecting-rod P, and slide It, connecting with the dasher-rod and arranged to move vertically between the guide-bars S, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the aboveI have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
STEPHEN T. STOUT.
