SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,335, dated January 4, 1881.
Application filed September 13, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that l. WILLIAM H. JOHNSON, a citizen'ot' the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Circular-Saw Vises, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of sawvises constructed to hold circularfsaws while tiling and repairing them and the object thereof is to provide a vise of this class into which such saws can be quickly and firmly clamped Without having to use screw nuts, thereby saving much time; a vise whichI per- -mit-s ot' instantly unclampiug the saw, so that it can be rotated easily, and one which provides facilities for easily adjusting the sawclamping devices vertically to provide for con veniently working upon saws of different diameters.
I attain the above-named objects by the construction and'devices illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a perspective elevation of my improved saw-vise, illustrating, in dotted lines, the position of a saw when clamped therein. ln the drawings, A is a table of rectangular form, to thel under side of which is secured a vertical leg, B. D is a clamp-support adapted to slide on leg AB. E is a section of table A, secured to the top end of support D. F is a clamp-stand secured to section E of table A. A circular clamp-plate, c, is secured to the face of clamp-stand F. A bolt, d, is secured through plate c and stand F. H is a second clam p-plate, in the hub ofwhich is pivoted a lever, a and a spring, c, is attached to lever a and to plate HV b is a setscrew in support D. t' is a roller in leg B. o is a strap, and a: is a weight.

other, and constitute a frame upon which the other parts of the machine operate, and the leg provides a convenient means for securing the whole machine in a vertical position in an ordinary bench-vise for use. Leg B is constructed with a projecting rib, a, on one side, of dovetail form in cross-section, as shown in Fig. 4, and the face ot' said rib is provided with a series of indentations, as shown.
The clamp-support D is grooved on one side to conform to the shape of rib a on leg B, and is adapted to slide vertically thereon, and is provided with a set-screw, b. A strap, o, is secured to the clamp-support D, near its lower end, and passes over a roller, t', pivoted iii leg B, and a weight, x, is secured to the free end of said strap below the lower end ot said leg. The section E of table A is adapted to t in the opening in the latter when support D is Jfully elevated, and the corresponding beveled edges, as shown, of said section and of said opening prevent the clamp-support and the parts which are attached thereto from rising by the action of weight w, so as to bring the upper face of section E above the level of table A.
The under side of the hub on clamp-plate H is slotted to receive the upper end of a lever, a, which is pivoted to said hub, as shown. On the upper end of lever a I provide a series of serrations, as shown in Fig. 3, and said serrations extend from the pivot-point in said lever toward the clamp-plate H. The said serrated edge of lever a projects up through the lower side of the hole through plate H and its hub, through which the bolt d passes, andthe under vside of said bolt is provided with a series of serrations, as shown,co`rre sponding to those on lever a. A spring, c, has one end secured to plate H and the other to lever a, and serves to draw the lower portion of said lever toward support D with some force, swinging the said lever on its pivot and causing its serrated portion to be pressed against and engagev with the serrated side oi' bolt d.
The operation of my vise is as follows, viz: If a saw of ordinary diameteris to be iiled, the parts of the vise which clamp-the saw are left at the elevation shown in Fig. l; but if a larger saw is to be iiled and its upper edge needs to be lowered for the convenience ofthe workman who is to file it, the set-screw b is unscreived, causing its point to be disengaged from its contact with the face of rib n on leg B, when the clampsupport and the clamping devices may be lowered to the desired height and there secured by screw I), the point of which enters the indentations in rib n. \Vhen so lowered the clamping parts will be in about the position shown in Fig. 2.
The weight attached by strap over roller t to the clam psupport D, serves as a counterbalance to the weight of the parts connected to said support and aids in inoving and ad- 15 justing theni vertically on leg B.
To remove plate H from bolt d for the purpose ot' putting a saw into or onto the vise over ,said bolt, lever a is swung back to the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, when the serrated portion ot' said lever swings away from bolt d,and said plate and lever can be easily drawn oli' froin the bolt and away from plate c, and the saw can be hung on said bolt in the position indicated b v the dotted lines representing a saw in Fig. 1, and against plate c. Plate H and lever a are now replaced 011 bolt d, and, being pressed fiinly against the saw, lever (t is released and left free to be drawn, by spring e, toward the supportD, which action causes the serrated edge of the lever to engage with the like side of belt d, and thus the saw will be firmly retained and clamped between plates c and H, and may he revolved, as required, on bolt d, as usually operated in process of tiling.
If desired, a flexible Washer may be used between clamp-plate H and the clamped saw.
Vhat I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination, the clamping devices consisting of the clamp-plates c and H. the serrated lever a, spring e, and the serrated bolt d, and appliances torsnpporting and vertically adjusting said clamping devices, Substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the clamping devices ct' a saw-vise, and with the clamp-support l) and leg B, ot' the weight attached to said clamp-support, as shown, and the setscrew Z1, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. rlhe table A and leg B, in combination with the cla nip-su pport l), the clamp-stand F, the serrated bolt rl, clamp-plates c and H, the serrated lever c, and spring e, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
