Description
Oct. 17, 1944. J. F. COOPER 2,360,549 I FEEDING PAIL .OR CONTAINER Filed May 8, 1942 c]. F. Cooper,
Patented Oct. 17, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2,360,549 FEEDING. PAIL on CONTAINER James F. Gooper, Darby, Mont. Application May 8, 1942,. Serial No. 442,261
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a feeding pail or container for live stock and is especially adapted for feeding animals which are at the nursing stage, and has for the primary object the provision of a device of this character which will permit an animal to obtain food in liquid form and in a volume equivalent to that obtained While nursing a mother animal and in a similar nursing manner, so that the young animal may be properly fed and will readily accept the device for its food.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a device of the above stated character which may be conveniently arranged on a support for use and may be easily taken apart for cleaning in order that it may be kept in -a clean and sanitary condition.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section illustrating a feeding pail or container for live stock constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a perspective view illustrating a valve element.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view illustrating the discharge neck of the device closed by a removable cap with the nursing nipple removed.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the numeral 5 indicates the body of the feeding container or pail and is provided with a pivoted bail or handle 6 in order that the device may be conveniently carried from one place to another.
The body 5 includes the vertical walls 1 and a bottom wall 8 positioned a limited distance above the lower edges of the vertical walls and is provided with an outlet port 9.
The bottom wall 8 slopes to the outlet port 9 so that the body will readily drain completely of its liquid contents.
An L-shaped fitting ID has one end secured in the outlet port, as shown at H, while its opposite end is provided with external screw threads to permit threading thereon a nipple carrying one side of the body or vertical walls thereof when applied to the fitting It. It is to be understood that the tube or pipe has one end internally screw threaded to match the screw threads on the fitting l0 while its opposite end is provided with a bead l2 to facilitate the removal securing on said end of the tube or pipe a nursing nipple l3. This nipple is preferably constructed of elastic material so that its non-nursing end may be conveniently stretched over the bead and onto the pipe or tube to establish a leak-proof connection between the nipple and the tube or pipe, and a connection which will permit the nipple to be conveniently removed when desiring to wash and clean either the tube or pipe or the nipple.
The threaded end of the tube or pipe is preferably provided with a ring M which may be employed for suspending the pipe or tube on a support when detached from the body of the device.
The connection of the fitting W with the outlet port 9 or the bottom wall 8 of the body is such as to provide a seat for a valve element [5 also provided with a ring [6 to permit it to be suspended from a support when not in use and also to act as a finger piece for the handling of the valve element. If desired the ring I4 on the tube or pipe I I may be dispensed with.
The valve element I5 is of substantially conical shape and is provided with a series of grooves I1, the purpose of which is to regulate the flow of liquid from the body through the fitting to the nipple l3.
When the tube or pipe H is removed from the fitting l0 and it is desired to employ the body 5 for carrying liquid and the like, the fitting Ill may be provided with a removable cap 18. The cap is preferably threaded onto the externally screw threaded end of the fitting I0 and is provided with a ring I9 in order that the cap may be suspended from a support when not in use.
A substantially U-shaped bracket 20 is secured on the body 5, and may be arranged over a support to position the body in convenient location in order that a young animal in the nursing stage may conveniently reach the nipple [3 to obtain the contents of the body by a nursing action on the nipple. It is preferable that the body of the container below the bracket 20 be restricted slightly, as shown in Figure 1, so that the body will not interfere with the application and removal of the bracket on a support.
While this device has been shown and described as for feeding young animals still in the nursing stage, it is to be understood that the device can be employed for serving feed to older animals by removing the pipe or tube I l and applying the cap l8 on the fitting l0.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it will be understood that minor changes in construction, combination and arrangement of parts may be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
In a feeding device, a container including vertical walls and a bottom wall spaced from the lower edges of the vertical walls and provided with a drain opening spaced a limited distance from one of the vertical walls, said bottom wall sloping toward the opening, means for attaching the container to a support, an L-shaped fitting having one end extending into the opening and flared against and secured to the bottom wall and providing a seat within the container to be engaged by a flow restricter, a substantially conical shaped element having grooves extending from end to end thereof providing the flow restricter by engaging the seat and extending a limited distance into the fitting, a pipe detachably secured to the fitting and extending beyond the last-named vertical wall of the container for a limited distance and provided with a beaded end, and a nipple applied to said end of the pipe.
