This invention relates to a bolt-holding attachment for pliers whereby a bolt may be held in position, also held against rotation while a nut is being threaded onto the bolt and seated.

An object of my invention is to provide a novel attachment which is mounted on one of the jaws of a plier and which is so positioned and arranged that the head of a bolt may be engaged and held in position in order that a nut may be threaded onto the bolt with one hand while the other hand is used to operate the pliers.

Still another object is to provide a novel boltholding attachment for pliers which can be quickly and easily attached to a jaw of the pliers, or removed therefrom as desired, and which is simple in construction and inexpensive to manufacture.

A feature of my invention resides in the manner in which the bolt-holding finger is mounted so that the jaws of the pliers are sufficiently spaced from the bolt to permit the nut to be threaded onto the bolt and seated without removing or shifting the pliers.

Other objects, advantages, and features of invention may appear from the accompanying drawing, the subjoined detailed description, and the appended claims.

In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my bolt-holding attachment in position on a pair of pliers.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.

Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the bolt-holding attachment.

Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numera1 I indicates a pair of pliers which includes the usual jaws 2 and 3 formed on the ends of the handles 4 and 5. My bolt-holding attachment 6 comprises a hollow cap or thimble I which is so formed that it fits over the end of one of the jaws 2 or 3 of the pliers.

A pair of straps 8 and 9 are formed on the top side of the thimble 1 and may be either integrally formed with the thimble or fixedly attached thereto. These two straps are spaced apart substantially as shown. A finger I is guided in the straps 8 and 9 and projects forwardly of the thimble I a substantial distance, this finger being provided at its outer end with a laterally disposed tip u. The outer end of the tip is beveled to form a screw driver point for engagement with the kerf or slot formed in the head of a threaded bolt. If desired, the tip H may be formed with a socket for en'- gagement with the angular head of a bolt, where such head is not formed with a tool engaging slot. A set screw l2 extends through a slot l3, formed in the finger l0 and is threaded through an opening provided therefor in the top face of the jaw 2 or 3, thus holding the attachment in position and also holding the finger I 0 against longitudinal shifting.

Usually a bolt extends through two or more plates and is spaced some distance from the edge of these plates. The pliers l are opened and the finger I0 is extended to a suitable distance so that the point II can engage the kerf in the head of the bolt while the jaws of the pliers clamp the plates through which the bolt extends. With one hand, the workman holds the plier in clamped engagement with the plates, with the tip II engaging a slot in the head of the threaded bolt that extends through the plates, and this tip will hold the bolt against turning, while a nut is being threaded on the shank of the bolt.

Having described my invention, I claim:

1. In combination with a pair of pliers including a jaw, a, bolt-holding attachment comprising a thimble fitted over the end of the jaw, a boltengaging finger mounted on the thimble extending outwardly therefrom, releasable means on the thimble engaging the jaw whereby the thimble is held on the jaw, and means adjustably mounting said finger on the thimble.

In combination with a pair of pliers including a jaw, a bolt-holding attachment comprising a thimble adapted to fit over the end of said jaw, a guide strap on the thimble, a finger extending through said strap and held thereby, a bolt-engaging tip on the finger, and a setscrew extending through the finger and through the thimble, said setscrew bearing against the jaw whereby the attachment is held in position on the jaw.

In combination with a pair of pliers including a jaw, a bolt-holding attachment comprising a thimble adapted to fit over the end of said jaw, a guide strap on the thimble, a finger extending through said strap and held thereby, a bolt-engaging tip on the finger, and a setscrew extending through the finger and through the thimble, said setscrew bearin against the jaw whereby the attachment is held in position on the jaw, said finger having a slot therein through which the setscrew extends.

4. .A bolt holding attachment for a pair of pliers comprising a thimble fitted over the end of one of the jaws of the pliers, means for removably securing the thimble on said jaw, a member adjustably secured on the outer side of the thimble, the outer end of said member extending beyond the forward end of the thimble and the outer end of the jaw on which the thimble is mounted, and bolt head engaging means formed on the projecting end of said member.

5. A bolt holding attachment for a pair of pliers comprising a thimble fitted over the end of one of the jaws of the pliers, means for removably securing the thimble on said jaw, a member adjustably secured on the outer side of the thimble, the outer end of said member extending beyond the forward end of the thimble and the outer end of the jaw on which the thimble is mounted, and a laterally extending bolt head engaging tip formed on the outer end of said member.

A bolt holding attachment for pliers comprising a thimble removably fitted over the end of one of the jaws of the pliers, a member slidably mounted on the outer side of the thimble, guide means for the slidable member arranged on the outer side of the thimble, means for securing the thimble on said jaw and for holding the member in its slidably adjusted position on the thimble,

the outer end of said member projecting beyond the outer end of the thimble and the outer end of said jaw, and bolt head engaging means carried by the outer end of said member.

7. A bolt holding attachment for pliers comprising a thimble removably fitted over the end of one of the jaws of the pliers, a member slidably mounted on the outer side of the thimble, guide means for the slidable member arranged on the outer side of the thimble, means for securing the thimble on said jaw and for holding the member in its slidably adjusted position on the thimble, the outer end of said member projecting beyond the outer end of the thimble and the outer end of said jaw, and a laterally extending bolt head engaging tip formed on the outer end of said member.
