1 Claim., (c1.-24o-1 2s This invent-ion relates in general to a shade holder and more particularly to a unitary holder for use with an electric lamp.
An object of this invention is to provide safe, simple and eflicient means for supporting a shade for an electric light in connection with a socket member, firmly yet so that shade and holder, or either of them, may be readily attached and removed.
Other objects of this invention include the provision of novel means for securing a shade holder to a socket for an electric light and to a shade therefor with a minimum of parts. In previous devices employed for the purpose a multiplicity of parts, including spider brackets, numerous screws and various structural members have been used, with the result that after being used for a while the parts become loose, requiring frequent adjustment and replacement to avoid breakage and causing much annoyance. The present invention involves the use of a unitary holding member provided with integral spring tensioning means and a minimum of adjustable parts cooperating with them to secure the holding member in operative position.
Additional objects, advantages and capabilities inherent in this invention will be readily apparent from the description thereof which follows.
This invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and while there is shown therein a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the same are susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a selected embodiment of the invention, and the views therein are as follows:
Fig. 1 is a central, vertical, sectional view of a shade holder embodying the invention in position securing a conventional shade, also shown in section, to an electric socket member having an electric light bulb secured therein, a portion only of the socket member, bulb and shade being shown;

The particular shade holder herein disclosed for the purpose of illustrating the invention comprises a hollow, generally bell-shaped, tubular shell or body I, "which may be of metal, plastic or other suitable material, having opposed upper and lower central openings 12 and|3. The upper opening I2 is provided with an in-turned peripheral portion or rim M. This opening is preferably circular and adapted to fit upon an electric socket member. Below the rim I4, the shell H has a generally cylindrical or tapering neck portion l5 provided with circumferentially spaced in-struck portions l6 and a punched hole in spaced relation with the portions IS. The punched hole I1 is threaded and receives a screw member 22, which with the in-struck portions acts as the retaining means for holding the holder to the socket member. A narrow peripheral inwardly extending flange portion 8 is formed about the opening I! in the punching thereof and provides for several screw threads with which the screw threadedly engages.
The shell H is provided with a lower, generally cylindrical skirt portion IS with circumferentially spaced in-struck portions 20 and a punched threaded hole 2| in spaced relation with the portions 20. The portions 20, the threaded hole 2|, and the adjacent flange are generally similar to the portions Hi, the threaded hole l1, and flange l8, respectively. The opening l3 and the cylindrical portion IQ of the shell II are adapted to receive or fit over the neck 23 of a shade 24. The threaded hole 2|, like the threaded hole I1, is adapted threadedly to receive a screw 22.
The configuration of the shell II and the arrangement of the portions l6 and the hole I! are such that the portions IE will be received in a groove 25 of a socket member 28, and a screw 22 may be threaded through hole I1 and the adjacent flange l8 and adjusted so that the inner end 26 of the screw and the portions I6 will tightly engage the socket member in the groove 25 and cooperate to secure the shade holder to the socket member. Similarly, the portions 20 and the hole 2| are arranged so that the former will be received in the grooved portion 21 of the neck 23 of a shade, and a screw 22 may be threaded through a hole 2| and the adjacent flange I8 and adjusted so that the inner end of the screw and the portions 20 will tightly engage the portion 21 of the neck 23, and cooperate to secure the shade in position with respect to the socket member. The portions l6 and 20 may have resiliency to maintain a tension on the screws 22 and keep them in adjusted position.
It will be readily appreciated that the configuration of the holder member may be varied to suit various shapes of shade and socket member. The skirt portion l9 may be extended downwardly and shaped in any suitable manner itself to serve as a shade, in which case the in-struck portions 20 and the lateral opening 2| would be omitted. It will also be appreciated that the holder member may be used with a reflector instead of a shade and that the reflector maybe of various shapes.
Instead of separately threading the hole I1 and the flange 18 the screw member 22 may be of self-threading type.

The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
A device of the character described comprising a unitary, generally bell-shaped, resilient tubular holder having opposed, open ends of different diameter, a tapered neck portion adjacent the end of smaller diameter having a plurality of ing a plurality of circumferentially spaced instruck portions and a lateral opening in spaced relation with said iii-struck portions, and a threaded member adapted to engage said cylindrical portion through said lateral opening and operable to cooperate with said in-struck portions to secure said holder upon the neck of said shade, whereby the holder may be secured to or detached from the socket member by the manipulation of a single threaded member, and whereby the lamp shade may be secured to or detached from the shade holder by the manipulation of a single threaded member.
