Filed Nov. 4, 1942 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Patented June 20, 1944 COMBINED CABINET, DESK, AND TABLE William A. Hamberg, United States Army, Oklahoma City, Okla.
Application November 4, 1942, Serial No. 464,501
1 Claim. (Cl. 190-12) (Granted under the act of March 3, 1883, as amendedADril 30, 1928; 370 O. G. 757) The invention described herein, if patented, may be manufactured and used by or for the Government for governmental purposes, without the payment to me of any royalty thereon.
This invention relates to a table and desk combination, the object being to provide a desk having a table which can be removed from the desk and stored therein for easy transportation,
The primary object of this invention, therefore, is to provide a cabinet of novel and improved construction which is compact, occupies very little space when not in use and is adapted to have a removable table which, when extended into a solid and serviceable working surface, cooperates with the cabinet to form a complete working desk.
An object of the invention is to provide a cabinet having space for drawers and storage space for a folding chair, supports for the removable table and other essentials.
Another object of the invention is to provide novel means for storing the table when not in use.
The table and desk described is for the use of the armored forces of the United States Army and is designed specifically in order that it can be independently carried on maneuvers without excess space being needed to provide for its use.
While the design and construction at present illustrated and set forth is deemed preferable, it is obvious that the invention is susceptible to changes and the right to these changes is claimed,
provided they are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
The invention is illustrated by way of an exam ple in the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig. 1 is a view in perspective of the invention in working condition.
Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of the cabinet in folded position.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary diagrammatic view of the upper comer and lower edge of the table and the cabinet.
Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of the holder for the table supports.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the cabinet.
Fig. 6 is a transverse sectional view of the cabinet, showing the top opened and top support in dotted lines.
Fig. 7 is a transverse sectional view of the table, showing the support for the table, and
Fig. 8 is an end view of the top and support I therefor.
Referring more especially to the drawings, III II designates a frame or cabinet which is about the height of an ordinarydesk or drawing table, as the case may be. The frame or cabinet is equipped with a number of drawers as shown at It and a sliding leaf l2, all of which are retained in place and concealed by a sliding panel l3 having a hand lift it for easy removal thereof.
It is to be understood that the arrangement or size of the drawers is optional and can be arranged to best serve the purpose for which the desk is to be used.
The frame or cabinet I0 is equipped with a sliding table l5 which, when elevated and swung into a horizontal position, adds space necessary to perform the duties for which the desk is to be used. One end of the table I5 is supported by pipe legs it which are adapted to be screwed into opening I! in plate I8. The legs is are prevented from becoming unscrewed and detached from the table l5 by a series of lock nuts I9 and 20. In order to support the opposite end of the table l5, indentations M are provided in corner posts 22 and the table is supported, as shown in Fig. 1. The table I! is prevented from becoming loosened and detached from the frame or cabinet ID by a bar 23 attached to the edge thereof, which extends into the slideway 24 of the table Hi. This bar is connected to the table l5 by straps 25.
When the table is not in use it is concealed in cavity 26 located at one side of the cabinet It as shown in Fig. 6 and the legs are inserted into a well 21 in corner post 28.
In order to provide file spaces for work to be completed or finished work, the top 29 may be swung open as shown in Fig. 1. This is accomplished by hingedly connecting the top 29 to the frame or cabinet Ill. The top is divided into file spaces by removable partitions 30 which can be placed in the top for any desired spacing". The top is provided with a hinged support 3| which is adapted to rest against brace 32 and thus brace the top and .prevent it from being torn from the hinges 33. This support lies flush with the top 29 for the reason that it is adapted to be received in the depression 34 in the top 29. A folding chair not shown is used with the desk and when the desk is folded it is adapted to be received in tlluie cavity 35, located at one end of the cabinet The frame or cabinet I0 is provided with corner protectors 36 and the usual trunk lock 31 to keep the top closed. Hand grips or carriers 38 are provided to aid in transporting the 'frame or cabinet Ill as a unit.
It will be seen, therefore, that the invention comprises a cabinet having a cavity in one side and a sliding desk surface adapted to be received within the cavity or to be extended therefrom.
The top of the cabinet, therefore, does not constitute the working surface, but said surface is provided for by a normally concealed table which is protected from damage, thereby being kept in a perfect condition, free from mars or scratches.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there has been provided a compact and serviceable cabinet which can be easily made into a serviceable working desk without a maximum of eflort.
It is to be further understood, however, that the constructional details of the invention may be varied from those disclosed in the drawings without departing from the invention or falling beyond the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I said slide-ways, sockets carried by the said table,
legs secured in the said sockets and adapted to support said table when it is extended for use, said legs being removable and arranged to be housed in said wells when the table is folded against the cabinet, and a top hingedly connected to the cabinet at the side opposite the table and adapted when folded to cover the slide-ways and the wells.
