My invention has applicability in various fields including, among others, those of the jewelers and optometrists trades. In displaying articles of jewelry, the salesmangenerally employs a limp piece of plush or velvet which he places upon the counter and upon which the items offered for sale are deposited for the customers inspection. When a sale ismade, the jeweler is obliged to obtain wrapping tissue from some place generally remote from the specific locale at which the items are beingdisplayed. It is one of the objectives of my invention to provide the jeweler with a unitary device containing a display board of suitable material, such as plush or the like, and a pad of wrapping tissue associatedwith a container removably attached to the display board. The arrangement is such that upon a raising of the display board, which serves as a lid for the container, a sheet of paper may be readily detached from-the pad for wrapping the sold item. And in this aspect of my invention, it is an important object to enable the lens tissue to be at all timeskept free from dust, an

The arrangement is such that the board can be swung into its open position and, if desired,'rested upon the counter or other suitable support'and, swung to its closed position flush with the top of thebox for sealing the interior thereof from the atmosphere. And in this aspect of my invention, it is a further object to enable the display board to be raised and lowered into its open or closed position without any interference' by the sides or other portion of the container.

Another important object of this invention is container before the container blank is folded into its fully formed condition, thereby facilitating the assembling operation.

Other. objects, features and advantages will appear'from the drawings and the description hereinafter given.

In this position the cover It] also 1 serves as a display member upon which items of jewelry and the like can be placed to be viewed by the customer. The entire device, by virtue 2 of its weight, will remain wherever placed and will less likely be subject to inadvertent displacement than the conventional plush display cloth of the jeweler. As the drawing indicates, the plush cover I2 is drawn taut over the stiff foundation material l3 of the display board I (see Fig. 3), so that it will serve as a more satisfactory background for display than a limp cloth with folds and undulations therein.

Figure 2 shows the display board H1 in one of its open positions, the container being provided with a marginal peripheral wall l4 and a recess I5 within which is placed the pad Hi. It is apparent that in this condition a sheet can be readily detached from the pad, the lid closed, and the item wrapped with the said detached sheet. The entire operation is performed without making it necessary for the salesman to leave the jewelry or other items he is selling in order to obtain wrapping paper.

It will be observed that the rear marginal wall |4a has hingedly associated therewith the cover flap H, the connection being effected along the scored edge It. Said cover flap contains the slits l9 and 20 through which extends the tongue 2| suitably attached at its upper portion 22 to the display board Hi. In the preferred form of my invention, tape 23 extends along the length of the front edge of the display board and covers the attached portion 22 of said tongue 2|. A fastener 24 extends through the cover flap l1 and the tongue 2| to detachably hold the latter in place.

When the display board II! is in the open position shown in Figure 2, it is apparent that it is in a plane intersecting that of cover flap And in the position shown in Figure 3, where the display board rests uponsurface 25, there is still a greater divergence between the planes of the display board l0 and the cover flap 11. This is rendered possible by virtue of the fact that the tongue 2| is of flexible material and permits various positions of the display board l0, when in its open condition.

The cover flap [1 is so proportioned that the front edge 26 and lateral edges 21 and 28 thereof are in spaced relation to the inner edges 29, 30 and 3!, respectively, of the marginal wall I4. This arrangement enables the cover flap I! to be moved to and from its closed position without contact with or interference by other portions of the container, thereby insuring a free operative movement of the display board In. The parts are so proportioned that the said display board ,ID, when in its closed position, is fully supported by the marginal wall l4 constituting the top of the container I I, This arrange ment will prevent a sagging or collapse of the structure under the weight of the display board In and the superimposed items, inasmuch as the extended surface of the marginal wall l4, rather than a mere peripheral edge, takes the load.

By reference to Figure '7 it will be seen that the blank, in its final die-cut and scored form,

contains a top portion 32, a bottom portion 33, side flaps 34 and 35, a front side 36, rear flaps 3? and end flaps 38. The said top portion 32 has an inverted U shape cut-out 39 forming the The bottom portion 33 contains the recess 40, the innermost edge 4| of which is disposed inwardly (Fig. 4 and Fig. '7) with respect to the edge 3| for reasons which will hereinafter appear.

The pad I6 is attached to bottom portion 33 of the container (as shown in Figures 4 and '7) by adhesively applying a strip of tape 42 over the top edge of the pad I6 and extending said tape downwardly over edge 4| and against the outer surface of bottom portion 33 (Fig. 4). This can be done when the blank is in its unfolded condition, as shown in Figure '7. Thereafter, when the box is in its completed form, the side flap 34 will extend, according to the preferred form of my invention, to a point in proximate relation to tape 42. It is preferred that the flap 34 be so proportioned as to leave a small space or slit 43 in the base of the container, so as not to interfere with the tape 42 extending therethrough. To accomplish this, said flap 34 should be of slightly less width than the depth D of recess 40 (Fig. '7). It will also be observed that with the above-described relative positions between edge 4| of the bottom of the container and edge 3| of the top thereof, there will be no interference with the removal of any sheet from the pad. The entire pad is proportioned and disposed so as not to underlie any portions of the peripheral wall M.

It is obvious that the entire unitary device above described is compact in form and is capable of enabling the aforesaid objectives to be obtained in a simple andinexpensive manner. It is also apparent that when an entire pad has been used up all that need be done is to operatively remove the fastener 24, and detach the entire container unit from the display board, whereupon a refill unit may be conveniently inserted. 7

It is understood that the embodiment above described and shown in the drawings is illustrative of my invention and not employed by way of limitation, inasmuch as numerous changes and modifications may be made within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of this invention.

I claim: 7

1. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comprising a container and pad therein supported by the bottom wall thereof, the upper wall of the container being apertured whereby access may be had to the pad, a cover flap pivotally associated with the container and adapted to overlie the apertured portion of the said upper wall, a flexible tongue attached to the display board and having a free portion detachably secured to said cover flap, said board being attached to the base portion only at the region of the connection of said tongue, the board being otherwise free for relative movement with respect. to the flap and base portion, whereby the. board may be pivotally moved between various predeterminedopen positions with respect. to the. container and a closed position in resting engagement upon the said upper wall of the container.

2. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comprising arcontainer and pad therein supported I by the bottom wall thereof, the top of the container being open whereby access. may be had to the pad, a cover flap pivotally associated with the said top of the container and adapted to extend into the top opening thereof, said flap containing a slitted portion therein, a flexible tongue attached to the display board adjacent the forward edge thereof and having a free portion extending through the slitted portion of the flap, said board being attached to the base portion only at the region of the connection of said tongue, the rear edge of the board being free ment upon the said peripheral for relative movement with respect to the flap and base portion, whereby the board may be pivotally moved between various predetermined open positions with respect to the container and a closed position in resting engagement upon the top of the container.

3. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comprising a container and pad therein supported by the bottom wall thereof, the top of the container being open whereby access may be had to the pad, a cover flap pivotally associated with the container and adapted to extend into the top opening thereof, a flexible tongue attached to the display board and having a free portion detachably secured to said cover flap, whereby the board may be pivotally moved between various predetermined open positions with respect to the container and a closed position in resting engagement upon the top of the container, the proportions of the board being such as to permit the rear edge thereof to extend at least to the level of the bottom of the container when the board is in a predetermined open position, whereby the board may rest upon any suitable sup port upon which the container is placed.

4. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comprising a container and pad therein supported by the bottom wall thereof, the top of the container having an apertured portion surrounded by a flat peripheral wall, the proportions of said apertured portion being no less than the proportions of the pad and being so disposed that no portion of the pad underlies said peripheral wall, whereby access may be had to the pad through said apertured portion, a cover flap pivotally associated with the said top of the container and adapted to extend into the said apertured portion thereof, the free edges of said flap being in spaced relation to the corresponding edges of said peripheral wall, the said display board being detachably connected to said flap, whereby it may be pivotally moved between predetermined open positions with respect to the container and a closed position in resting engagewall.

5. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comprising a container with a plurality of walls including a bottom wall, a pad supported by the bottom wall, said bottom wall containing a slitted portion at the region of the top edge of the pad, and a flexible tape extending through said slitted portion and adhesively secured to the top edge of the pad and the outer surface of isaid bottom wall, the top of the container being Open whereby access may be had to the pad, the said display board being movably associated with the container and supportable thereby whereby it may serve as a lid therefor.

6. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comwhereby access may be had thereto, the said bottom wall of the container having a slitted portion therein at the region of the top edge of the pad, and a flexible tape extending through said slitted portion and adhesively secured to the top edge of the pad and the outer surface of said bottom wall, the said display board being pivotally connected to the container and supportable by the said peripheral wall.

7. In a device of the class described, a display board and a base portion, the base portion comprising a container with top, bottom, front, rear and side walls, a pad supported by the bottom wall, the top wall being apertured, whereby access may be had to the pad, the bottom wall being recessed at one end thereof, the recessed portion extending substantially to the top edge of the pad, one of said side walls being connected to the top wall and extending across the said recessed portion of the bottom wall to a predetermined point short of the said top edge of the pad, whereby a slit is formed in the region of said top edge of the pad, and a flexible tape extending through said slit and adhesively secured to the top edge of the pad and the outer surface of said bottom wall, the said display board being movably associated with the container and supportable thereby whereby it may serve as a lid therefor.

8. In a device of the class described, a container adapted for detachable connection to a display board and for supporting therein a pad, the container being formed of a. blank containing in succession a parallel arrangement of a rear flap, a top portion, a front side, a bottom portion and another rear flap, the top portion containing a substantially U-shaped cutout portion forming a cover flap, said cover flap being adapted for attachment to said display board, the bottom portion having an end portion thereof recessed a predetermined amount, whereby a pad may be placed on said bottom portion with its top edge adjacent to the innermost edge of said recessed portion, the top portion being further provided with a side flap on the side thereof corresponding to the position of said recessed portion, said side flap being proportioned so as to extend across a predetermined part of said recessed portion when the blank is operatively folded into its final form, the length of said side flap being less than the depth of said recessed portion, whereby a slit will be formed in the bottom of the fully formed container, for permitting fastening means for the pad to extend therethrough.
