CHARLES E. STODDARD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
APPARATUS FOR DESICCATING EGGS.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 235,039, dated November 30, 1880. Application filed April 9, 1880. (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES EDWARD STODDARD, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Desiccating Eggs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my machine for desiccating eggs. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detached view of part of the feeder or trough for holding the egg-batter.
In constructing my improved machine for desiccating eggs the box A serves as a framefor supporting the axle C, which is made in two sections, and has a support on the central partition, L, of the box. This box A thus forms two drying-chambers in one, for working two drying-cylinders B at the same time or alternately.
Upon each end or section of the axle C are placed two adjustable disks or wheels, D, upon which is tacked a web of cloth or fine woven wire, B. These wheels or frames D are made adjustable on the axle C by means of screw threads thereon and correspomling screw threads cut in the wheels D. One of these screw-threads must be a left-hand and the other a right-hand screw-thread, in order to stretch the cloth B after it is tacked in place; also, when the egg-batter is to be removed from the cloth, these disks or wheels D may be given a reverse turn in order to slac ken the stretch, and thus facilitate the removal of the eg -batter; and if cloth be used I recommend cotton cloth, which should be prepared by saturating the same with egg-batter or a mixture containing egg-batter. These wheels or frames D may be made of wood and the web tacked thereon, or they may be made of iron with suitable holes on the rim for attaching the cloth or Wire-cloth. These drying-rollers may be set in revolution by pulleys or other suitable means, and a current of heated airis admitted through the opening E in the bottom of the box A. This current of heated air may be supplied by any suitable furnace, which it is not necessary to describe.
On the upp'er part of the box A is shown a feeder, G, which is to be operated by hand and properly tilted to regulate the flow of the egg-batter upon the roller B. This feeder has a gage-lip, H, to regulate the flow of the eggbatter.
As already mentioned above, the first layer of egg-batter is intended to coat the cloth or wire-cloth, and thus complete the rollers for drying the second and following coats, which are from time to time to be scraped off from the rollers, while the first coat remains as a finish or preparation of the cloth or wire-cloth.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination, with box A and the rollers B, of sectional axle C, tilting feeder G, having gage-lip H, and blast-inlet E, substantially as described.
2. The drying-cylinder B,having adjustable ends or disks D, in which the cloth or woven wire is prepared by coating the same by eggbatter or a mixture containing egg-batter previous to using the same, thus giving an improved surface for receiving the successive coats of egg-batter to be dried and scraped off, leaving the first coating on the cloth, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. STODDARD.
Witnesses WM. MITCHELL, Gno. A. Manon.
