To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CARL PosEN, of Offenbach-ou-the-ll'lain, Germany, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Pocket-Books and other Articles, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is to furnish fastenin gs for pocket-books and other articles so constructed that they may be easily and conveniently fastened and unfastened, and will not be liable to get out of order.

The invention consists in constructing a pocket-book fastening of a base-plate to support the operating parts, and provided with lugs and an opening in its rear part, the spring carrying a plate and having a catch, a lockplate having a pivot-socket, a catch, and an opening in its forward part, a pivot for hinging the lock-plate, a spiral spring for raising the lock-plate, and a knob to engage with the lock-plate, as will be hereinafter full described.

A represents the base-plate, in which, at one end, is formed a semicircular opening, having a notch in the middle part of its straight side. Across the middle part of the base-plate A is formed a flange, B, having a notch in its center, and in its side edges, at the rear side of the flange B, are formed lugs O to receive the pivot of the hinge. The part of the base-plate A in the rear of the flange B is covered by the (ModeL) semicircular plate D, which has a downward ly-projecting flange around its curved edge.

To the lower side of the plate D is riveted the spring E, which is bent downward to pass through the aperture in the base-plate A, is then bent forward and upward, and its forward end is riveted to the forward part of the lower side of the said base-plate. The baseplate A is secured to the body of the pocketbook by clinched nails or points, and the spring E is so formed that the spring-plate D maybe held a little above the base-plate A, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The outward movement of the plate D is limited by the keeper F, which passes around the spring E just in front of its shoulder, and the ends of which are clinched in the body of the pocket-book.

To the spring E, a little in front of its shoulder, is attached a catch, G, to engage with a similar catch, H, attached to the middle part of the pivot-socket I of the lock-plate J. The

pivot-socket I is made of such a length as to fit between the lugs O of the base-plate A, and its cavity is made of such a size as to receive the pivot K and a spiral spring, L, coiled upon the said pivot K. The ends of the pivot K are riveted in holes in the lugs C. One end of the spiral spring L is secured to the socket I, and its other end is secured to one of the lugs G in such a position that the tension of the said spring L will hold the lock-plate J raised, as shown in Fig. 3.

In the forward part of the lock-plate J is formed a hole, M, to receive the knob N, the shank 0 of which is passed-through the flap of the pocket-book and through the arms of a U- plate, P, placed upon the said flap, and is riveted down upon the inner arm of the said U- plate P, so that the said knob will be held securely in place. The outer arm of the U-plate P has an outwardly-projecting rim or flange formed around it, forming a recess to receive the lock-plate J, so that the fastening can be unfastened only by pressing upon the tripplate D to disengage the catches G H and allow the spring L to raise the lock-plate J. This construction prevents any one from opening the fastening by raising the lock-plate J instead of pressing down the trip-plate D.

The knob N is made with a convex top and straight sides, as shown in Fig. 10. With this construction the pocket-book is fastened by pressing the lock-plate J down upon the knob N, the convex top of which causes it to center itself and enter the hole M, the catch H at the same time striking the catch G, forcing the spring E downward and passing the said catch G. The catch G is raised by the elasticity of the spring E, engages with the catch H, and thus locks the fastening.

The fastening is unlocked by pressing the spring-plate D downward, which withdraws the catch G from the catch H and allows the lock-plate J to be raised by the elasticity of the spiral spring L.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A pocket-book fastening constructed substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the base-plate A, having flange B, lugs (J, and an opening in its rear part, the spring E, carrying plate D and catch G, the lock-plate J, having pivot-socket I and catch H, the pivot K, the spiral spring L, and the knob N, as set forth.

2. In a pocket-book fastening, the combination, with the base-plate A and the lock-plate tion, with the base-plate A, having lugs O, the

lock-plate J, having socket I, and the pivot K, of the spiral spring L, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the lockplate J is raised when released, as set forth.

5. In a pocket-book fastening, the combination, with the knob N, of the U-plate P, having an outwardly-projecting ritn around the edge of its outer arm, substantially as herein shown and described, to form a recess to receive the lock-plate J and prevent the fastening from being unfastened by raising the said lock-plate, as set forth.
