SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 233,974, dated November 2, 1880.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN BROUGHTON, of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Bowing Blinds, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a device which may be attached to blinds for bowing them or holding them more or less open with their meeting edges at any desired angle to each other.

My invention consists of two plates constructed to be attached to the faces of window shutters or blinds, and each provided with a laterally-projecting stud, in combination with two arms or levers of unequal length pivoted, respectively, to the aforesaid plates, and each arm or lever having an eye in its end and a too substantially at right angles to the lever at its pivotal end for overlapping the end of the lever which engages the stud and holding it thereon, all of which will be fully hereinafter described in detail.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a face view of the meeting portions of two blinds having my improved device secured thereon. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section through the meeting stiles of the blind 0 and a partial section of my device. Fig. 3

represents a face view similar to Fig.1, except that the device is adjusted to hold the blinds at a greater angle to each other; and Fig. 4 represents a horizontal section through the 3 5 blind-stiles when in the position shown in Fig. 3.

Similar letters of reference designate corre sponding parts in all the figures.

In order to enable them to be secured quickly and cheaply in place I cast upon the inner faces of each of 4 5 the plates 0 C one or more projecting pins or spurs, a, which enter the wood, when the screw 1), passing through the plate, is screwed home thus preventing the plate from shifting laterally without the necessity of two screws.

To the plates 0 Oare pivoted arms or levers D D, and in the present example of my invention the same screws, 1), which secure the plates upon the stiles A A form the pivots.

The plates 0 O are provided with conical hubs or bosses 0, through which the screws b pass. The arms or levers fit upon said hubs or bosses, and are countersunk upon their outer faces, so as to fit loosely around the head of the screws 1), upon which they are capable of turning freely.

From the face of each plate 0 0 projects a pin or stud, d, and near the end of the arm or lever pivoted to each plate is an eye, 6, adapted to engage with the pin or stud upon the other plate, the arm or lever being recessed or bowed at f to permit it to pass over the pin or stud upon the plate to which it is pivoted.

As here represented, each arm or lever is constructed so as to form a locking device, each being provided with a toe, 9, extending transversely to the length of the arm or lever, and of a length to lap over the end of the other arm or lever when the eye of the latter is upon one of the pins or studs (1, so as to prevent the accidental disengagement of the said eye from the pin or stud.

As the toe g projects at approximately a right angle to the arm or lever it is moved to and held in a horizontal position by the tendency of the arm or lever to gravitate downward.

When it is desired to release the blinds to open or close them, the arm or lever, which serves as a locking device, has only to be swung sidewise, as represented in dotted outline in Fig. 1, to release the eye of the other arm or lever from the pin or stud d, with which it engages.

Though both the arms or levers are here represented as furnished with eyes a, one only might be provided with an eye, in which case the other arm or lever would serve simply as a locking device, and the pin or stud d upon one plate would be dispensed with.

Where only one arm or lever is used the other arm or lever might be dispensed with, and a button substituted therefor.
